I would go 7 as well. it is a more secure os than xp (and looks prettier if you care for that sort of thing).

Guess what? My new PC doesn't work, like everything I buy :@

All it gives me is continous short beeps which according to the manual means a power error.

Have tried a diffrent PSU, 1 stick of DDR3, re-seating GPU/CPU, checked all cables etc. No luck.

What can I do? :(

Continuous beeps indicate motherboard or PSU.

Tried another RAM stick in a different slot too?

If you bought everything from the same store, of the core components (CPU, RAM, motherboard, PSU, GPU), send back what you can.

//edit: also, just checking you've connected the power to the graphics card, and the extra power to the motherboard?.

Scan can have the pos back then.

I have tried everything including another Ram stick in a different slot with no luck, so Im 99% sure the board is screwed.

Just my luck to get a board that doesn't even work :/

You're not the first. At least yours had the dignity to fail from the off, rather than dying (along with 2 sticks of RAM) after you've set up your entire system.

True I suppose!

Do you know how long it usually takes for them to test it all?

Scan took around 10 days for mine, from pickup to delivery. They arranged the collection too, but I think that depends on how much hassle you're having (so you should be OK) and how good a mood the bloke on the other end of the phone is in.

Keep in mind that if nothing is found to be wrong, then you'll have to pay for carriage, so make sure all those wires are plugged in correctly again. ;-)

Checked everything over again and it is still throwing up the power error :(

About to install Win 7 pro now

My vista harddrive has 2 patitions, C drive (main system drive) and D drive (for my files).

Now when i boot up the Win7 DVD, can I select the new harddrive to have drive letter C???

will it automatically change the others?
I would like it to be C, but if it doesnt work I can go with another letter.

I think with Vista and 7 you do get C:. With XP you usually got C: but it basically came down to pot luck.

Best way is to just pull the SATA cable out of the back of the other drives first. ;)

wooo it worked perfectly.

Automatically made this the C drive and changed the others, I can still boot vista too.

Haha yes i was thinking of removing the SATA cable, but decided to just give it a shot in hope! ;)

Ahh ok. Where do you live?

In my case i have 2 alternatives.
The first is a computer shop that i nearly buy everything their.
The second one their are 3 computer forums that they have buy and sell
computer parts new and old. You get very good prices too but you
need to pay a little fee for sending you the parts but its really
cheap because their not far away to send me things. Many of the
computer sellers of the forums have oficial license to sell like that.
Also its good is those forums you can get some of the computer sellers
to to accept for example an old video card as part of the price of a new one.

Maybe their is something similar on any of both alternatives for you country.

Cheers

Yay my PC is finally working :) Same spec's listed as before but running an Asus P7P55D-Pro Mobo instead.

I do have one problem though, I can only run 4GB of Ram otherwise it wont boot :/

I have the latest BIOS and looking on google it seems lots of people are having this problem with i5 and diffrent memory amounts/types.

I suppose all I can try is the lowest speed (DDR3-800mhz) and try to put the other 4GB in then?

Heres a good technical question -

Why are sound drivers so hard to find now days? It took me and Ian 20 minutes to locate SoundMax drivers for Windows 7 that worked. And why are sound drivers the only downloads still hosted on Pentium 90s with AOL 56k connections? An epic 4k/sec! GO GO GADGET INTERNET!

I know that feeling. The official sound card drivers from Realtek are on taiwanese servers, which have a speed like a turtle...
