Pay attention class, here is today's maths problem.... :-)

Posted by mortal
First problem: Two sides of a triangle measure 535mm x 5915mm. What is the length of the third side? In this case, the missing measurement is the slope of the roof.
Second problem with a hopefully explanatory pic.

Steel battens have to fixed to the roof ridge timbers, to support the Gyprock plasterboard. The battens run across the width of the room. The width of the room is 4130mm. The battens are purchased in 6000mm lengths.
The question is; how many lengths of steel batten are required to do the job? Each batten is to be fitted at 450mm centres. The room length is 5915mm. One batten is to fitted at the edge of each end of the room. The existing roof ridge timbers are at 800mm centres.
My head is spinning trying to nut this one out. :-)

Assuming that the triangle has a 90 degree angle in it, Pythagoras is your friend!

A^2+B^2=C^2

535^2 + 5915 ^2 = 286225 + 34987225 = 35273450

Square root of 35273450 = 5939,145561 and that is the length of your missing side.

The other one is too hard for me :P
So 5939mm is the approximate length of the missing side? That is the length of the ceiling.

I think, but I'd let someone else check it, if I were you ;)
Man am I sorry I opened this thread on a Friday morning with a hangover...
If i've understood what your saying correctly I beleive...

A) If you can't use the off-cuts of the battens you will need 15 lengths.

B) If you can use the off-cuts (your off cuts will be 1870mm but you will need to cut them again to 1600mm-ish to enable you to get a fixing at the ends of them into your roof timbers which as you say are 800mm centres) you will need 12.

I would appreciate if someone checked that too!
Thanks, that's good enough for me, I thought it would be 12, and I have some spare in the garage just in case. Thanks again, it was doing my head in lol. Off to the hardware store tomorrow. :-)

Dude, that's basic maths. I learned that when I was 13 :P
Well, to me, that's the most advanced Maths ever. (you may have guessed I am rubbish at Maths).

Pythag is fun!
The Answer is 6!
6? How can it be 6, explain?

the answer is always 42 and pythagoras is booring

used to be GPGSL's Nick Heidfeld
The total number of battens at 450 centres, including one for either end is 15. The width of the room is 4130mm. 15 x 4130mm = 88725mm.
11 battens at 6000mm = 78000mm.
88725mm - 78000mm = 10725

I will buy 11 battens this morning. :-)
