Quick question if I may.

I have a new laptop but it doesn't have a network card or anything. if i want to put my internet on it I guess I need a USB network thing. I have seen them but someone said they might need powered USB ports. How do I know if they are powered? and how do I know if it needs to be powered anyway?

Thanks

LOL Jon.

Keeley, I think by powered they mean that you add a power supply to the USB device.

It doesn't have a network port? I can't ever recall seeing a laptop without a network port.

just use any of the ports and it will (probably) be fine. powered usb ports usually refer to the ports on the motherboard

It has network ports, but does that work with wireless?

I will try a USB thing and see if that works.

Thanks

Usually, yes. You have 2 choices for wireless access: a PCMCIA card that slots into the side of the laptop, or a USB stick that looks like a flashdisk that allows wireless access. A 3rd option, but more complicated, is to use a network cable to connect to the router.

how is a cable more complicated? you plug a network cable in... it works, but with a wireless card, you have to install the drivers, setup security, then connect (and hope that nothing is interfering with the signal)

The problem with a cable is that the network point is downstairs and my room is on the 3rd floor. Therefore I would need a long cable!

Thats why Iwanted in wireless.

Thanks
