Give it a go. If it falls apart you'll have to reinstall from scratch anyway. :P

I have to admit, that does have some comedic value in it :) I just wouldn't want to risk cleaning up the mess if it gets pulled off the desk or something.

I've just found the new remote assistance and problem recorder which would help immensely with the computer illiterate home workers (we currently use netviewer but its a pain to walk them through how to find it etc) so I've decided to install it on my old athlon 3000 but the dvd drive has decided it doesn't want to read the disc so I'm currently doing an archive install (moves XP to a windows.old folder and installs a fresh win7) from a dvd drive shared on the notwork. its working surprisingly well :)

To be fair, ATi made an infinitely better job than NVIDIA of getting decent drivers out with Vista, even in the beta phase. In the beta phase a lot of people with NVIDIA cards couldn't even boot the OS!

It'll be interesting to see if the well-documented ATi problem some had with dual-screen setups prevail into Windows 7 saying as Microsoft have made a lot of changes to the multi-display code.

That's the reason why I just gave up and got a 2nd hand ASUS Xonar DX. I'm not funding that cash-cow with 3 figure sums again if they're not supporting me for months and years when an OS changes every-so-often... it's not like they weren't given enough time to prepare drivers. The public beta and RC phase lasted a year and a half as I remember, and Creative will have had builds and documentation from MS on the new sound stack long before that.

The other major manufacturer to have problems with Vista initially, NVIDIA, sorted the major ones quickly and fixed the minor ones after a few releases too. The Creative drivers still aren't fully functional now!

I'd belive ATI did a better job if they actually worked here. Seems every time I actually listen to people and give ATI a go, there drivers are still determined to be as @#$%& pathetic as possible. Can't use Aero on my machine without a BSOD. A nice common problem too. I'll be going back to nVidia ASAP.

no they aren't

also the 8.12 x64 drivers won't even load (error 43) which apparently is because because i've got 8gb ram

And I said it was common above...

ATI drivers actually worked throughout the Vista betas. A minority suffer from the apparent driver problem with multiple displays (I say apparent driver problem, not because it's not real, but because it's not necessarily the drivers causing it). It would be a nice change if you didn't use every single opportunity which arose to diss a company because of a a problem a minority suffer from. It's not like Creative, who couldn't make a working driver for months.

Back on topic, Microsoft's Windows 7 servers have all but ground to a halt. It seems that some direct links are still working, but the supported means of getting to them aren't, so currently non-MSDN or Technet subscribers can get the .ISO file, but not a key (which isn't necessary for installation, and you can use it for 4 months without a key anyway, before it will need reinstalling). Some have got their key, but it seems very few at the moment. Gonna be a long night in Redmond it seems. ;)

There are no 8.12s for Windows 7. There are some 'preview' drivers here though (link may not work, as it might be cookie dependant, like a lot of the AMD support site), but stick Windows 7 into the search at the top and choose ATI.

ok, i jumped to conclusions. they are the updated drivers released yesterday and i have the exact same problem with them as i do with the 8.12s in vista x64 (driver not loading with error 43, 32bit drivers on win7 32 work fine)

Seems whever I look the "minority" problem is actually quite common. Hell there was 3 TRL members with it alone. Not the first in the long-line of shite drivers by ATI anyway. AMD said they would that fixed and its worse than ever. I have no confidence in them.

Looking forward to Windows 7 and nvidia power again soon.

A minority of NV cards and Intel chips (though of course most of theirs are in laptops, so may work differently) are getting exactly the same thing, but it's still pretty common. ;-)

I've no idea what's going on, but perhaps it's more of a DirectX issue than a graphics card one. As I've kept saying though, it certainly doesn't affect everyone (myself included, using either NV or manufacturer (though one PC at work, which runs a display in the entrance from a 7100GS is really unstable when loading Windows, but I've not looked into what's causing it yet, and I've seen nothing to suggest it's graphics related)), and seems more dependant on other factors. Feck knows what though.

Anyone know what 7's requirements are to run it?

Since I have a free case hurling about all over the place, i'm thinking of putting my old 80gig drive and running it

I just went to the technet site and its adding more servers atm so i'm not able to see any of its requirements.

At the PDC demo they were running 7 on a 1GHz Celeron with 1GB RAM. You're going to need at least 20GB to install and use it (the base install itself takes 12GB)

Intel Celeron 2.80GHz
512 RAM
80GB HDD

This is what I have. The RAM will be a problem right?

It might be fun. Give it a go. Windows 7 is designed to scale better than Vista did, and I was testing Vista out on a laptop with 512mb when it was released (and it was just about OK).

I'll be trying 7 on a netbook within the month, which I'd imagine would be worse than it would be on your PC.

Expect bugs on programs for a while though. Most will install and work and fine, but others will need updates before they'll work.
