Got it running on my laptop, other than the problem of Realtek been useless hence the audio dosn't work full stop, it seems very good! Haven't had much time to play around on it though, really like the new taskbar though :)

the download will be today available, but you need to be fast because they have set a maximum of 2,5 million downloads..

I wouldn't be using beta software in a production environment, let alone a beta OS. ;-)

Later on today at some point. Whether it'll be something predictable like 9am US or just when it's ready, who knows.

The download is already being hammered, and the only masses who have access to it at the moment are MSDN members. I'd imagine it'll be slowing to a crawl when it becomes available to non-MSDN members.

Why not? It's just a SATA pass-through. You don't even have to use a separate enclosure if you're entirely paranoid. You could just stick a drive in one of these.

From what I have read, Vista drivers and software has all been working fine in Windows 7 so far, which is great. But its still a beta OS at the end of the day - it will have issues.

Realtek's don't :( The driver supplied by Windows 7 says its working, but it dosn't, the HD Audio Control Panel isn't compatible, then crashes if you try and define Vista Compatility and Realtek's driver just says its knackered in Device Manager. Joy ;)

Yeah but RealTek suck :P

I guess this means we still have to put up with ATIs pathetic drivers, since its even more aero based than before. *sigh*

...... Yes they do! ;) but in 99% of laptops, they can only have Realtek cards, and in the 1% theres that crappy creative card.

I forgot about Creative. They were unable to make Vista drivers that didn't rape your car and ejaculate over its life-less corpse. The chances of there stuff working on Windows 7 is pretty minimal.

I think we're splitting hairs here. (I'm not trying to tell you have suck eggs but...) eSATA is primarily used for external applications (eg. to replace external usb hard drives). Installing an operating system on external storage (ignoring SANs) runs the risk of having the it being disconnected from the machine which will cause windows to blue screen.

sure you could easily use that icybox (my home server uses the 5hdd one) but thats not an external enclosure, so the risks of it accidentally being unplugged aren't there and i could just save the money by using the spare drive bays in the case...

I had Windows running from my laptop through an eSATA ExpressCard controller for 2 days a month back... powered by my desktop PSU. ;)

It's not recommended normally, but for just testing out a beta OS, running Windows through eSATA in an external enclosure will be fine. So long as the box isn't tangled up in a load of wires, just waiting for the cables to be pulled out, it's fine. :)

USB is usually a no-go though. I know you can get it going, and I did once with XP a couple of year back, but it's quite pathetic. It's pretty much the opposite of what an OS wanting. The only real exception to the rule is WinPE on a USB stick, which is really handy.

They're really handy, especially with SATA being hot-swappable. I'd have liked a bigger one (like the 5 hdds into 3 5.25" bays you've got), but only have 5 5.25" bays, so I've just got 2 of the singles ones. Could have got a 3 HDD one, but I couldn't find a trayless or screwless one in stock at the time of order. My motherboard has 10 SATA ports, and I've still got one empty too. :P
