I had Windows running from my laptop through an eSATA ExpressCard controller for 2 days a month back... powered by my desktop PSU.

It's not recommended normally, but for just testing out a beta OS, running Windows through eSATA in an external enclosure will be fine. So long as the box isn't tangled up in a load of wires, just waiting for the cables to be pulled out, it's fine.

USB is usually a no-go though. I know you can get it going, and I did once with XP a couple of year back, but it's quite pathetic. It's pretty much the opposite of what an OS wanting. The only real exception to the rule is WinPE on a USB stick, which is really handy.

They're really handy, especially with SATA being hot-swappable. I'd have liked a bigger one (like the 5 hdds into 3 5.25" bays you've got), but only have 5 5.25" bays, so I've just got 2 of the singles ones. Could have got a 3 HDD one, but I couldn't find a trayless or screwless one in stock at the time of order. My motherboard has 10 SATA ports, and I've still got one empty too. :P
