Bit of a weird thread, but tonight had a huuuge wasp in our house, and after some research, its a queen that hibernates over the winter and has obviously got a bit lost. It ended up flying into a strange ceiling light we have. We strained but sticked a piece of paper over the top so it wouldnt fly out. Its clearly stunned, as its hit the hot light and dropped to the base of the light.

Except now comes the problem. We dont know if its dead or stunned since the ceiling lights design and height is a bit too awkward, but its trapped at the base of this light. The plan we have is to spray some wasp insecticide tomorrow or whatever into the base of this light to ensure its dead and isnt going to fly off and make some nest next year.

However, is it safe to use an aerosol so close to an electrical light? Obviously it'll be off, and will have been off for a while so it'll be cold. Any advice you could lend would be really appreciated :)

sorry, can't help with the aerosol thing, but i get flies committing suicide on my tall uplighter quite often.

it about 6 foot tall, and like a bowl shape, with a halogen bulb, and it will start to flicker a bit, and i will start to smell a burning smell. the first time it happened i though something electrical was on fire, but noticed smoke coming from the top of the lap. so switched it off and switched the main ceiling light on, and climbed on a chair to look at it. there was a fly lying on its back, toasted and burning.

its happened about 7 times now.

The wasp was nowhere near qualifying for the description of "little"!

Yeah Muks_C, I did kinda get the feeling, eventually it would just go a little too close to the light once more and burn itself to death. But...these things hibernate, so I really cant be sure that its dead, and during April will go fly to our loft and setup a large nest!

I'm pretty sure the poor thing was just after some heat next to the light, and in its panic of me chasing it with a newspaper, it just misjudged its landing.

Cheers Qwerty, I thought it would be ok, just the risk of getting some on the bulb, and then that magically igniting somehow ;)

Smack with the Daily Fascist! Alternatively, catch it in a jar and boil it!

The aerosol matter will have evapourated after 10 mins of spraying on the light/bulb so it will be safe

Yeah, absolutely! Perhaps slightly sadistic, but when nature enters your house....

why are people refering to it as 'the poor little thing'?

Wasps are the sum of all evil in my opinion. KILL IT! KILL IT!

Don't Queen wasps have about 64 gazillion randy bastards following their every move?

Sounds more like a Hornet to me.

Incidently, I suggest you do this too... a trophy of your defeating of this monster. Or something.

No, as Markko said the Queen hibernates over winter. The 64 million randy bastards won't be hatched yet!

Does that mean he will have 64 million randy bastards in his house trying to kill him for killing their queen next summer? :(

i once had a wasps nest in my mailbox. so i kicked it off the wall and it fell on the floor so the nest rolled out.
then i threw a brick on it to scare them away. they all went crazy so i ran into the house.
about 30 minutes later i heard a buzzing sound coming from upstairs.
the bastards all got in my house through a ventilation hole and decided to build a new home for themselves in my bedroom! :o
so i got me some rope and tied my sleeves tight. i also put on a winterjacket (middle of summer... hot!) and put on my motorcycle gloves and put on my helmet and i also was wearing a scoff (to be sure).
oh... before the dressparty i prepared to make some plates with lots of sirop on them.
so i went upstairs and started to run with the sirop plates through the bedroom to catch them all. it kinda worked and i got to kill most of them. but it was really hot with all those clothing.

it's just an idea in case all the queens friends are coming.
