I've been testing the previews at work, and have a little laptop back home over the summer just to have lying around the house, as it's perfectly fine for looking up something quickly.

I'm unsure as to whether to buy it or not. I'm sure I could adjust to that GUI, but I'm so disappointed the lack of foresight from Microsoft that it will probably put me off upgrading, certainly initially.

Windows 7 does everything I need, so while I'd like to have some of the new desktop features of Windows 8, I'm struggling to find the justification for upgrading.

There's a difference between what "end user" thinks and what the industry will do:

Techrepublic.com - 10-reasons-windows-8-will-be-painful-for-developers

Techrepublic.com - 10-hurdles-windows-8-must-clear-to-succeed

Computerworld.com article - Microsoft_We_can_remotely_delete_Windows_8_apps

Businessinsider.com - Windows 8 Is Taking The Wrong Approach To Competing With The iPad

I could go on and on and on. I work in the industry for a living. It puts the steak in my plate.
APART from being an end user, on what experience do you base your opinions ?

Windows... Microsoft = shackle and chain to a steel ball the size of the moon.
The only problem, is that windows users are in denial.

You have to understand that you do not have a choice!
That Microsoft does not want you to have a choice.
Anyway you look at it, it does not make it a good thing.

Here is what I think of Windoz...

I don't care if Microsoft can delete apps remotely. So can Apple and Google, but it only happens if there's an issue with that app (such as malicious intent), and currently it's only for Metro (sorry, "Modern UI";) apps. Again, that doesn't affect the vast majority programs most of us will be using in Windows 8, and most of us will never see a deleted app because it won't get through the marketplace in the first place.

As for the rest of your posts, I'm struggling to see what you're talking about. You say you work in the industry, but that Microsoft are shackling you? Metro is a huge new market for Windows - if anything it will open up doors for smaller developers, allowing them to offer small, low-cost apps in the way mobiles have done for a while now. The stringent rules of the marketplace should also cut the crap, poorly coded work out.

What this will hurt is the shareware generation, where developers charge far too much for a small, niche and often very poor product - that's not something I'll be sorry about losing. No-one is going to pay £10-30 for a small program now that the app store will be charging the £1-5 I'd expect for most apps.

IWE, your little Eee PC is a nice little portable computer but one of the thing that is part of the Microsoft ball and chain is each new version send everyone to the store spending their hard earned money for a new box. If you want to stay up to date to have the most secure Windows PC, the choice is not yours, someone else chose for you.

Have fun with Eee :
