Spanish GP Race CoverageHello and welcome to coverage of the 2005 Spanish Grand Prix live from Barcelona. In yesterdays qualifying session we saw Juan Pablo Montoya take pole position for the third time this season and he will be looking to become the first pole sitter this season, and the first since the 2004 Chinese Grand Prix, to convert pole position into the win. However if he is going to do that, first he must contend with the torrential rain that looks as though will continue for the vast majority of the race, and also the 21 other cars looking to steal it from him. Anyway with five lights on we’re ready to get the race underway…
And we’re away! And Heidfeld has a superb get away and is already alongside Montoya!
But disaster in turn 1! Heidfeld, Montoya and Webber spin! And Da Matta inherits the lead!
A look at the replay shows that Webber was too ambitious on the brakes, ran into the back of Heidfeld who lost control and with no control Webber and Montoya made contact as well!
Meanwhile Webbers team mate has enjoyed a much better start
And is it about to get even better…
It is! Kubica takes the lead of the grand prix!
Meanwhile Ralf Schumacher is using the slipstream to good effect…
And he eases past Alonso and into 3rd place!
But there’s more contact down in turn 1!!!
The replay shows that Barrichello just loses the back end under braking and spins the car, leaving those behind him nowhere to go!
And by the look of it Sato was the unfortunate one to reach the stranded Renault first, losing his front wing in the process.
Whilst Klien will also have to pit for repairs
Meanwhile at the front Raikkonen is looking to pass Alonso as well…
And he makes it!
Now Schumacher is putting Lotterer under pressure…
And he outbreaks his fellow countryman in turn 1…
Heidfeld is looking to pass Sato down into turn 9…
But they make contact! And the pair spin!
And they are joined by Vettel and Klien who made the same mistake!!
Sato rejoins 15th
But what’s this, Heidfeld is pulling off…
And he’s out of the race! A suspension failure means he can no longer continue!
Meanwhile back in the points, Lotterer is looking to become the latest man to pass Fernando Alonso…
And he is through as well, Alonso is really struggling for pace today…
But what’s this?! Montoya’s pulling off the road!
The curse of pole position has struck again! Montoya is forced to retire with a puncture just moments after setting the fastest lap of the race!
Massa is also seemingly lacking in pace today as Coulthard sails by…
Raikkonen is having a look up the inside of Schumacher…
But they make contact and both drivers spin!
The pair rejoin down in 15th and 16th…
And just moments later Vettel and Klien come together again at turn 9!
Vettel just manages to keep his car pointing the right way and goes on his way in 17th
Klien on the other hand is now in last place
His team mate however is enjoying a much better start to the race and after the initial chaos Davidson is up to 5th
Now Lotterer is looking to remove Schumacher from the podium…
And Andre shows his team mate how it’s done
Now that’s Massa stopped at turn 9! Is there a problem?!
Luckily for Felipe it is not a mechanical problem, he and Villeneuve have just become the latest victims of turn 9…
They rejoin in 15th and 16th place
A bit of Arrows on Arrows action as Glock and Zonta go side by side down the home straight…
And Zonta moves up into 9th
That’s Davidson running wide at turn 3!
He just about keeps the car facing the right way but loses out to Alonso and he might lose a place to Coulthard as well…
But disaster for Minardi! Coulthard runs into the back of Davidson and leaving him helpless as their closest rivals sail past and move further into the points!
He’ll rejoin in 16th
Anyway with ten laps down and the field now settling down after the fairly chaotic opening laps, let’s have some standings
Webber has been quietly making his way up back through the field since his error in turn 1, and the Arrows of Glock is next on the Aussies hit list…
And he makes it easily
And Vettel is off again! He has had a nightmare of a weekend so far…
That’s Lotterer pulling off the track!
Yet again a potential podium has slipped from his grasp… how long will it be until he finally makes it onto the podium…
Now even Zonta is looking to move past Alonso…
And he’s made it! Incredible! He’s gone from 16th to 4th in just 14 laps…
Raikkonen is looking to replicate Zonta by moving past Sato…
And he moves up into 9th
Webber is continuing his charge, this time against Coulthard…
And the comeback continues! He’s up to 6th
And just a few corners later, although it was unfortunately missed by the cameras, he’s past Alonso and into 5th. Will anyone be able to stop Webber today…
Meanwhile for Alonso things go from bad to worse and Coulthard takes the opportunity to sneak past Alonso immediately after Webber
But he’s run wide at, you guessed it, turn 9!
Although luckily he manages to keep the car running and only loses a position to Button on the run down to turn 1…
Glock now seems to be struggling after his good start and has just dropped another position to Schumacher to find himself in 11th…
Now Coulthard is looking to regain 7th from Button, although he looks a little too far back to try it this time around…
Apparently not! The Scot pulls out a banzai move to demote Button back into 8th place
And that must be Raikkonen in the sideways Jordan!
A look at the replay shows that after getting a run on Button through turn 3, the Finn was unable to slow down in time, hit Button, and spun.
He rejoins 11th with Villeneuve right under his rear wing
Time for some more standings!
Ralf Schumacher is looking to creep back into the points…
And he does so at the expense of Button!
And Glock is off the road!
Looks as though he’s lost it in the penultimate corner… he’ll rejoin in 16th
And Davidson is off again!
He filters back in in 15th place
Is it me or has it stopped raining?
And as we look upon Raikkonen making his past Sato for 9th, it looks as though it has…
Barrichello is searching for a way past Massa…
And he finds it
Button is attempting to drift around turn 1…
That was never going to end well
He rejoins 15th
Davidson is very close to Massa…
A little too close it seems! Massa is off, whilst Davidson continues as though nothing has happened
Massa is back on in 17th
As Klien does a Button there seems to be a BAR stranded on the apex of turn 9…
And it was Fisichella who was the unfortunate one… unfortunately we have no replay of how the Italian ended up there…
Zonta is the first into the pits from 4th
And unsurprisingly he is unwilling to take an early gamble on the slicks
And whilst Ricardo is in the pits Raikkonen is looking to pass Schumacher on the run down to turn 1…
And he makes it easily
Meanwhile Zonta has rejoined in 7th place
But he immediately comes under pressure from Villeneuve…
Who slides past the Arrows and into 7th place
And due to the sheer amount of action we've seen in the opening laps we'll be taking a short break before the pitstops get properly underway. But don't worry we'll be back soon
