Australian GP Race Day

Hello and welcome to coverage of the opening round of the 2004 F1 season here at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia. Yesterday saw William’s Juan Pablo Montoya just pip Renault’s David Coulthard to pole position by 2 thousandths of a second in a thrilling qualifying session. The forecast for todays race is very dry, with short spells of light rain expected during the race.

And indeed we can see the rain falling as the drivers get underway.

Coulthard is trying to go around the outside of Montoya into turn 1…

And he makes it stick. Coulthard now leads the race.

And sets the fastest lap

Uh oh, looks like some drivers have tangled off camera at the back of the field…

And yes, Lotterer and Villenueve pit for new fronts wings whilst McNish comes in for a new rear wing.

Webber in the other Jaguar and Da Matta in the other Toyota are getting close at turn one…

And they make contact!!! Da Matta is thrown into the air whilst Webber spins.

Somehow that Toyota is balancing itself on two wheels and remarkably comes back down to earth without any damage

Another fastest lap for Coulthard

Before Barrichello completely destroys his time

A Renaults is off into the gravel in sector three.

And it looks like Verstappen has punted the Italian off as he waits to rejoin the race.

Williams are looking very quick today…

And indeed Montoya has passed Coulthard going into turn 1

Fisichella pressuring the Sauber of Glock

But they make contact as Glock firmly shuts the door

And De la Rosa has nowhere to go

Both drivers are out on the spot

Button is being held up badly by the Ferrari of Schumacher

It looks like a train is forming behind the German

Barrichello has caught right up to the back of Coulthard

Ohhhh that’s tight, but the Brazilian squeezes his way through into 2nd

Time for a quick look at the standings

Button is still behind Schumacher

Whilst Glock is the first to come into the pits for a scheduled stop.

It’s getting quite damp in that final sector

Barrichello pits from P2

He emerges 7th

And his team mate is in next time around

He however emerges 2nd behind Coulthard who is yet to stop

Button, Webber and Lotterer are also in

Montoya retakes 1st from Coulthard but neither Ferrari driver has received a pit call. Could they be trying a 1 stopper?

The two Saubers are battling it out over 10th place, nervy moments for the team

Still no sign of a pit call for Schumacher as Da Matta takes to the pitlane

Meanwhile the other Schumacher is having a fairly quiet race in the top 8 as rain starts to fall once more

The apparent 1 stopping Schumacher has caught right up to the back of the leading Williams and looks to be lining up a pass…

But they make contact and Montoyas in the wall!!!

Montoya will need a new wing after that

And he comes straight into the pits to receive it.

And emerges down in 10th place, he will be absolutely fuming with Schumacher after that

Verstappen finally enters the pits and Schumacher is called in as well.

He comes out in 4th

Coulthard is now running well in 2nd although Alonso is catching

Montoya is working his way back up the field and has his eyes on Heidfeld’s 8th place

And he takes it and moves to 7th as Ralf Schumacher pits

Alonso is trying to go down the inside of Coulthard into turn 1, this probably won’t end well…

And indeed it doesn’t Alonso is left facing the wrong way as Coulthard drives off…

But Schumacher clatters into the stranded Mclaren and is out oof the race! I think that’s what’s called karma... Alonso meanwhile survives with a damaged front wing

That little incident has probably just made Montoya’s day

Frenzten running well in 11th

Unlike Raikkonen who has only managed to claw his way up to 13th, such a difference to a year ago…

Alonso in the pits to fix his wing

Whilst Montoya puts a move on Sato for 4th

He now has his sights set on Button’s Mclaren as Heidfeld pits

Alonso now down in 16th place

Coulthard pits as Montoya has a look down the inside of Button…

But Button shuts the door

The leader is now pitting…

And he emerges with a comfortable lead over the battling Button and Montoya

Frenzten now up into 9th…

Well until Glock demotes him back to 10th

Alonso finding some good pace on a fresh set of tyres

Button is now struggling to defend from Montoya

And he’s through into turn 3

Montoya and Sato now in the pits for what should be their final stops

Which promotes Coulthard up to 3rd

Webber pits from 6th place

Along with Raikkonen, Glock and Button

Which puts Verstappen into 3rd place, a good showing considering he started 10th

However both Sato and Button have overtaken Montoya in the stops

With just 8 laps to go here are the standings

Montoya trying to retake Sato for 5th

But it goes horribly wrong as he is left spinning

Luckily however there is no one to capitalize on his mistake

Raikkonen is having a torrid time out there and is under pressure from the Minardi of Frentzen

And he’s off the road at turn 7…

And Frentzen’s through into 11th

Montoya is trying his hardest to make up the ground he lost from his failed overtake as he sets the fastest lap of the race…

And again

Before Button decides to rain on his parade

Barrichello is now just two laps from victory

He’s now into the final sector…

Into the last corner…

And Rubens Barrichello has won the 2004 Australian Grand Prix, an absolutely flawless drive from start to finish.

Coulthard takes second

Whilst Verstappen completes the podium

Good result from Verstappen, too bad Micheal had no where to go when Alonso was there in turn 1. We hope to finish with 2 cars next race!

DOTD
Rubens Barrichello is fully deserving of this award for his faultless drive from start to finish. However it would have probably gone to Juan P Montoya had he not been involved in the incident with Schumacher.

Takuma once again did a better job than Ralf. Seemed a good race from Ralf, puzzled that with the crashes at front he only managed to get 9th.
Damn Schummy,but he crashed anyway;)

After the poor quali from Kimi and Andre's additional stop for a new front wing, a better result was hardly possible. Hope for an improvement in Malaysia.
This should be stickied, I reckon...are there any mods who would be actual legends and do so?

Sepang free practice should be up later today. However whilst running attempting to run it the first time I noticed a loophole in the setup reward rule in which if neither driver from a team actually posts a laptime then technically it could be argued that the team would qualify for the reward as their drivers times would be exactly the same.

Therefore the revised rule is that, at least one driver from each team must post a time in order for the team in order for them to qualify for the setup reward.
