Good evening all, and welcome to the inaugural round of the GrandPrixGames Nations Cup, live from Surfer’s Paradise, Australia.
This event has been several months in the making – not everything is quite perfect, however, here we are and the session is about to begin.
And with barely a few seconds on the clock, we have our first on-track action. Chris Copeman for the USA takes to the track.
Closely followed by the Montenegro car, driven by Mirko Vukcevic
Nathan McGregor of Australia
Ukyo Yoshimoto of Japan
Kota Razak of Malaysia
And Marko Jantsher from Austria
There are now 14 cars on track, as Copeman begins the very first flying lap of the Nations Cup
And it’s a 1:28.700
Mirko Vuckevich is next up, and cannot beat his time – slots into 2nd place on the grid, 1.25 seconds behind the American. His pitcrew gets an ear bending about the traffic
McGregor also can’t beat Copeman, but slots in ahead of Vuckevich, just 3 tenths down
Stein is next up and knocks 2 tenths of the benchmark time
De Boer can’t match the german’s time, slotting into 4th on the grid
While Yoshimoto puts in a storming first effort, 6 tenths clear at the top
Razak slots into 3rd from his first run
While in the battle of the Germanic nations, it’s first blood to Austria as Jantsher deposes Stein to claim a provisional 2nd:
Before quickly being jumped by Horvath – the Hungarian less than 2 tenths down on the benchmark
After the first rush, here are the top 6, as Canadian Stephen Heart takes to the track
Followed by Dan Paddock of New Zealand, who suffers some traffic on his first flyer
Heart sets a respectable first time of 1:28.692, which nets him 6th place:
Paddock makes an attempt at passing Xanthis. The greek driver looking for a new team manager
One of the later runners is Paulo Tafuro of Italy:
And William Ward of Ireland – who has borrowed a team Switzerland car, after the Ireland machine got held up in customs:
While Jantsher is already out for his second run after only 8 minutes of the session
Closely followed by Maverick of Switzerland, making his first foray onto the track:
And Zakes of Madagascar
Horvath is also out on his second run
Tafuro is 3 tenths down in the first sector
He pulls some of the deficit back, but it’s not enough. Tafuro takes 2nd place
Vanthoor can only manage 7th for Belgium
Urazel’s first run is heavily compromised by a disowned portugese entry. 14th place is the best he can manage...
Ward manages little better, hitting the timesheets in 12th
Closely followed over the line by Jantsher, who takes provisional Pole position, by less than 1 tenth!
Maverick settles into 10th place – the driver clearly not comfortable in the car – more work on the seating position required
Zakes sets a reasonable effort – 5th place is his reward
Oakley only manages 12th spot
It’s very close at the top – Horvath crosses the line, less than 2 tenths down on Jantsher, but only achieves 4th place
A summary of the times after only 12 minutes. Antunis manages to sneak unseen into 6th position:
Stein sets out on a 2nd run
Followed by Antunis
Stein is well down in the first sector, despite the clear track in front of him
Antunis’ strong pace continues
But he loses a lot of time in the last sector and doesn’t improve
A summary of the full timesheet as Razak rounds the last few corners
He sets an amazing time! – a 1:27.128, 6 tenths clear of the field!
Paddock’s troubled qualifying continues – 19th place for the New Zealander
Maverick improves back up to 10th place
Yoshimoto hits traffic in the form of a slow greek car
Mcgregor leaps up the timesheet to 4th place
Hunsley crosses the line, but doesn’t improve his time
Zakes, a late entry, causes a surprise by jumping up to 2nd
With 20 mins gone, Urazel sets off again for Turkey
Heart, meanwhile is on his third run
The Turkish driver is down in sectors 1 and 2...
But improves to 16th place
The track gets busy again has the halfway point approaches. Copeman doesn’t improve on his earlier efforts...
Oakley improves to 9th spot
And Stein to 6th
De Boer doesn’t improve – his time nearly 2 seconds off the pace
Very few improvements at this time in the session. Even Razak can’t beat his provisional pole time:
Here is the top 6 with 35 mins to go
Several drivers now on their third runs. Maverick for Switzerland is one
Paddock is another. His pitcrew again mistiming his release, as he gets stuck behind the Hungarian car on his outlap
Hunsley is having a quiet session for South Africa. Down in 12th place
Tafuro runs wide in turn 1
And hits the wall on the outside – that will take his team some time to fix, and is a wasted lap of his 12 lap allocation. Yellow flags out at turn 1
Hunsley doesn’t improve, stays in 12th
Copeman hits traffic
As does Maverick
Which destroys his lap. 3.7 seconds off the pace
Times and laps with 30 mins remaining:
Vukcevic is having a session to forget. An improvement to 20th is all he can manage on that lap
Heart sets out on his final run. He’ll be hoping to improve on his current 18th position
Razak also on his final run. No improvement needed, but he feels the need to go out anyway
Yoshimoto still holding 6th, also on his last run
Jantsher is 4 tenths off after sector 2
Heart doesn’t improve. His qualifying is over
Razak also can’t get near his personal best
Yoshimoto finds some time and jumps up to 2nd place
Mcgregor doesn’t improve. 5th for the Australian
Hunsley makes a small improvement to 13th place
Antunis sets another strong time, but doesn’t better his previous time
Paddock goes on a charge...
But it’s not enough. No improvement for the new Zealand car
Maverick also doesn’t improve
The Italian team have done a masterful job, and have repaired the Italian car. Tafuro, however can’t improve, but remains in 9th place
Zakes crosses the line 6 tenths down, remains 3rd
Vanthoor’s final effort isn’t enough. 11th place for the Belgian
And so, only 2 cars have remaining laps, Ireland and great Britain. The Irish car is up first
Closely followed by Oakley in the England Car
Oakley Doesn’t improve his time. It’s all down to Ward for Ireland and Turkey. Can Ward improve?
The answer – Yes he can, but not enough! It’s all down to Turkey now...
Turkey makes a last gasp improvement to 14th place, but it’s not enough to deny Malaysia. Razak takes the first GPGNC pole position for the Australian Grand Prix!
Japan make it an All Asia front row for the first race, with Madagascar close behind
Here are the final standings:
Thankyou for staying with us – we’ll be back on Wednesday for the Race!
