I found this program yesterday called cff explorer that allows you to edit any exe,you can assign any exe more than 2gb ram, this works great for older stuff ie gp4 that uses less than 1gb standard, ive tried it and instantly the po spikes i used to get have stopped, i would recommend giving this a go if you dont already know about it, ive tested this on gp4 and gtr2 and its made a significant increase in performance especially in windows 7 x64 ,please give it a try and post some feedback (Y)

DOWNLOAD

Open the main .exe file then use this setting, then select file/save and overwrite.

I'm running windows 7 64bit so I thought I would test it out, I could see some difference in performance but the game is still only using 470Mb of Ram

test the po, mine went from 150-200 spiking every few seconds to less than hundred dropping down as the cars spread, it may not work the same for everyone but worth a try at least

CSM doesn't like you doing that.

there is no reason that it would work with no-csm-mods and not with csm-mods

csm will detect it as a modified exe probably...

yep,

bt it can be solved by adding it into the csm mod you want to use,and make csm swapping it with the original one;-)

throw this cap file in your patch folder of your mod for the same effect.

It will only make a difference with mods with huge textures and high detailed meshes.

i tested it with the mod i'm doing for Party-Boy's cars,so it contains very detailed shapes(around 1,5-2,0 mb),textures high(2048*2048),lod 0 option disabled,and original tyres\rims

@ZaZ,Wow, once I added the file you suggested it made a massive difference, 60 frames for the entire race on Windows 7 64bit I've never seen the game so smooth.

@LWC, after some testing I could not see much improvement, but it must be doing something allowing 2Gb?

Hi Zaz, would the cap also work in a similar fashion for Vista 32bit? I have 4GB RAM, I'm just nervous about buggering up my installation of GP4 if I start messing about with the .exe ;)

Not really because 32 bit can only effectively use 2 to 3 GB anyway. 4GB RAM in a 32 bit computer is quite useless as the total bandwidth allows a 32 bit system for 4 GB address space.
Windows itself needs that space too for other perposes and things like videomemory includes that as well.
So if you have a 1024 MB videocard, there's 1 GB less left to use for starters. Then various other things might take up another 512 mb, so your 4 GB RAM will result in 'only' 2.5 GB which you can use as 'real' RAM.
If a single process then takes up more than 2 GB, that means there's less then 512 MB left for the whole OS + other background processes/services and pagefile swapping will take place.
Harddisk access is way slower than memory access, so your system will start to stutter and becomes unresponsive.

In the most lucky situation you might have some benefit on a 32 bit system, but it could very well bite you in the bottom, too.
There's a reason why the setting is not standard on a 32 bits PE file.

Hi Zaz, thanks for the reply!

My 32bit lappy came supplied with 4GB RAM, despite not being able to use all of that lovely memory (good ol' Dell). I've been tempted to find a 64bit solution, just to increase the framerate or reduce PO for GP4 but I can't install Windows 7 64bit on this machine without a lot of problems (as Dell don't provide any drivers for this XPS model).

I guess the best idea would be to plug away with what I've got and wait until I have the need/cash to splash out on a 64bit machine.

I had the same problems with my Dell XPS. I was able to find all drivers though. You could try it.

Hi Zaz I have no PO issues at all on my 64 bit machine. ( yet)
Slightly off topic, if you can help me:

I am having crashes and non starts. CSM wants to or is waiting to turn of windows aero theme, alot of minimise maximise aero on aero off game crash..
Any ideas

I need to manually turn aero glass for the game to run with CSM.

It Runs perfectly directly from gp4.exe and from gpxpatch with aero theme on but crashes via CSM

Some people say its my windows setup
