The crashes seem to be caused by video and sound drivers.

I have just upgraded my Windows 8.1 PC to Windows 10. Upgrade went smoothly. With no major issues (yet!).

Fired up and ran GP4 via GPxPatch (as Admin, with Windows XP SP2 compatibility). Watched a race from start to finish, no issues there either. no CTD! So, it was Looking promising at first.

Especially after I also loaded up 'Team Editor' by Lo2k to make changes to helmet and steering postions. That went OK as well.

Latest Update is:
ALAS! Sadly after further testing, I am forced to come back here to update this post with very sad news: Even on my new upgraded-to-Windows-10-from-Windows-8.1 PC, GP4 still crashes regularly, just as badly as before! :(

Even after re-installing the game and playing on a fresh install with no decryption, no CSM, no Updates or Patches, no Mods, no GPxPatch, etc, the game still crashes fairly regularly.

It's a lost cause now for me I'm afraid. I have lost all hope of ever again being able to enjoy GP4 without constant CTD (sparing the unthinkable prospect of having to revert back completely to a Windows XP computer!!!)

Goodbye GP4! :( Oh well. was fun while it lasted. :( :(

Goodluck to y'all.

----------------------------------
EDIT, 1 year on:

In case this is helpful for someone else still stuck in a similar situation I was in a year ago: It is just over one year later, and I have new hope for GP4 (H), as I can start to see some progress regarding overcoming CTD issues - It has taken me this long to finally discover only now that AVG Anti-virus has been the BIGGEST part of my problems all long!!! The reason being, ever since I switched to Avast Anti-virus, GP4 CTDs hardly ever happens anymore, or it happens much much less now :-)

(once-in-a-while the game still crashes while loading, during the Calibrate Audio / Calibrate Graphics phase, but at least now I can pretty much expect to get through an entire race distance at almost every attempt - which had become nearly impossible to do under AVG Anti-virus without the frustrating near-guarantee of a looming CTD, even when I temporarily disabled AVG just to play GP4).

So my recommendation, if you happen to be using AVG Anti virus and you are having constant & frustrating GP4 CTDs, get rid of AVG! It is NOT ENOUGH to disable it whenever you wish to play GP4 - to me it still seemed somehow to be able to affect the stability of GP4 all the time. so, Just uninstall AVG completely (which was actually a painful process in itself, but that's a whole 'nother chapter for another day!) and then go with a totally different Anti-virus program!!! e.g. Avast seems to be adequately OK, and much much more friendly towards GP4.

At least I didn't upgrade Windows 10 cause I think Windows 7 is more way better for GP4.

Gp4 and windows 10 working perfectly.
Gp4builder works too.
Zaz tools working too.

I did notice a few things for example in the game that some tracks were doing some clipping
when in windows 8.1 were not.

I also played movies and their is a huge improvement in display, i used movies that i already saw
several times that i have in the PC as source of comparison.

Only bad i had to install again some 3d programs that i use. The rest didnt change .

Overall i think is good for now but NOTHING IS FOR FREE, Microsoft wants us to be dependant of them
and to elimate its Linux competitors.

I just updated to windows 10 myself although with less problems. Did Windows 10 prompt you to download and install Direct Play? Once direct play was installed on my laptop, gp4 works perfectly. I did have to roll back my video card drivers to an earlier version as well. Sorry but that is all I can offer. Hope you get your problem sorted out. Have a great day.

After latest update on Windows 10, 15/06/2016, GP4 has 'first chance exception' errors and drops out.
I have tried GPxPatch but get same results.
I also have a new 24" Asus display?
I have tried locking in display 'dpi' in compatibility options but no difference.
Does anyone have a work around?
Thanks, KH

PS: I did a restart on the PC as I was working on a very large document (300+ pages) and thought that it might have left some random data in memory but the issue remained after a complete shut-down and restart with GPxPatch first opened program.

GPxPatch version: 3.91

Maybe an update to latest GPxPatch would be useful. Not sure it would solve your issue though.

And unless the info is enough for René to help you, you should put verbosity to High to have more details of the crash.

Thanks for the tip.
New version of GPxPatch is now working.
Also previously I had 2 x ASUS 22" displays (16:10) but added a new (secondhand) 24" ASUS (16:9)
I think this might have also created some issues.
However GPXPatch 4.44 (file version 4.4.4.3) is now working.
Many thanks to those who keep this great game going.

Yes, GPxPatch 4.44 fixes bugs in GP4 that caused crashes with multiple monitors.
