Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari - Classic by Atticus

“My first contact with Imola dates back to the spring of 1948. [...] From the very first moment I considered the possibility to turn that hilly area into a small Nurburgring due to the natural difficulties condensed into the circuit that was going to be built, thus offering a really demanding track for men and machines alike. Imola racetrack’s proponents felt reassured by my opinion. In May 1950 the work started. I attended the ceremony in which the first stone was laid by Lawyer Onesti under the aegis of CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) that granted ITL 40mn: I believe this was the first contribution the Committee made to motor racing. A small Nurburgring – I was saying to myself that day looking around me – a small Nurburgring, with equal technical and spectacular resources and an ideal track length. My idea became a reality over the decades that have elapsed since then.”

These were Enzo Ferrari's first words on what was to become a world famous (and, sadly, also infamous) race track bearing his name. While it eventually arguably did not live up to its 'small Nurburgring' label, it was certainly no less dangerous, which resulted in several reconfigurations to make it safer. At the end of these, it was littered with chicanes to the point that any kind of on-track overtaking became nigh-on impossible. Its original character vanished and its original layout became almost unrecognisable.

What I did was that I played around with this idea of imagining the track operators of 2001 restoring some of the roads that make it possible to open up its original 1952-1972 track configuration. You can check out the 'new old' in-game layout below.

This Classic configuration is nominally 5.018 kilometres to the lap and contains all manner of curves and corners (most of them now flat-out), hills both up and down, and changes of direction from down to up in the middle of corners, and all with a lap speed of around 265kph in spite of two hairpin bends. (Nowadays, Monza is 250kph.) The fast, difficult curves of the Imola circuit, many of them blind and plunging downhill on a tightening radius, were the sort where real driving skill paid off. The run from Rivazza all the way up to Tosa is totally flat-out, as is the run from Acque Minerali all the way down to Rivazza and the long straights with a few small bends make for excellent slipstreaming opportunities for online communities.

Of course, it is dangerous; you can have some VERY big shunts, if you are not careful - but it is only a game and that, I think, justifies bringing a design like this back to life.

I really hope you will enjoy driving this track as much as I enjoyed building it (to paraphrase an F1 Virtual press release).

Did somebody actually tested the Track?

My GP4 crashes instantly when I choose the Track in GP4 and click "DRIVE".

Something seem to be wrong there.

Hm, it works for me and it seems it works for others as well.

Could you post your GPxPatch log here in case someone or me can figure out what's wrong?

With regard to the crashing, I have found that if I save a .dat, (say after editing the magic data) with gp4 builder v1.912 it always crashes when clicking 'Drive'.
However if I make the changes, save it in v1.912, and then open it and save it in version 1.841, it will load in game with no problems. Perhaps you could give it a try?

Yeh I find the same thing. I always have to apply a new Magic Data using CMagic to stop the crashing.

Yep, same here. I actually had this little issue with Imola as well when I pushed it through my QA process AFTER I installed magic data. Each time I changed something in the .dat, I had to remove and reinstall magic data to make it work. I wonder if this is fixed in the newest GP4 Builder, although it makes no difference for me as I like 1.912 more (apart from the above issue).

@rookie26: So, in a nutshell, if you modified ANYTHING in the .dat, then perhaps you should extract magic data from the .dat (I can PM the file to you as well, if you want) with CMagic, then remove magic data from the .dat with GP4 Builder and finally re-insert magic data into the .dat, again with CMagic. If you need further assistance on the how-tos, feel free to ask, I think we are willing to help. If you've not modified the .dat (I'm not offended if you did, by the way), then just re-download the track and install it again.

Hi there,

no, I didn't change a Thing in the .dat. I don't really know how to change anything at all.

So I downloaded the File again but still the same problem. It still crashes after I click "Drive".

Do you need the whole GPXPatch Log or just a few lines? The log is about 30 Pages long.

@Briere: Haha, I know how you feel. :-)

@rookie26: It's no problem if you post the whole thing, people usually do. The more, the merrier when it comes to troubleshooting.

It is really more than 30 pages, Atticus. It will take more than a minute to scroll from start to the end of the log. This will be very annoying for this Topic. I will send you a private message and maybe you can delete the parts which are not important for solving this matter.

Thx in Advance.

Many Greetings
