Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg [W.I.P - BASIC VERSION RELEASED]

I wasn't sure whether to upload this, as it is only a work in progress and is something that is, unlikely, to be fully completed. Nevertheless, it is a little something I have been working on over the past few months in my spare time.

It is the Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg circuit that is used in the IZOD IndyCar Series - on Grand Prix 4! The video is an on-board lap and exterior view lap with Sebastian Vettel. The materials (track surface; grass; barriers etc) are all taken from the original Grand Prix 4 circuits in the 2001 game, apart from the sponsors.

Could I release it at this stage? I guess I could, except there are a few bugs...

- cars accelerate on pit lane entry, resulting in 'drive through penalties'
- cars don't stop properly in pit lane

If I could get those two done in the forthcoming months, I could release a version. I will probably be very busy with work in the next few months, so my free time will be limited. But we shall see. For the moment, enjoy the video!

Thanks for the comments. :) Thanks to this the main pit lane bug is now fixed, so cars can pit properly, although the drive through penalty bit still exists.

I'd say always welcomed. There is a Long Beach circuit (can't remember where I got it) that is far from the real circuit in the final sector, but still superb :-)

A little update, have been a few basic objects, such as flags, pit stands and lines on the tarmac to give it more of a street feel. A note on the pit stands, I've placed them where they are on the circuit, which is of course in a different position compared with F1. Not an issue in the race, but if you wanted to qualify you'd be 'in' the pit stand. Not a big issue but worth noting.

I will release it at some stage, just not yet. And if a release does happen like I said before, don't expect it to be fantastic, but a nice circuit to race around in any case - and bug free!

Two annoying things though:

1) the crowd standing on the ground are not showing in game
2) the pit lane tarmac I have changed, but the change is not showing in game

Not entirely sure why and it isn't a camera issue. A minor but frustrating issue. For the moment, going to continue developing the land around the track as I have above. :)

The tarmac is not showing because you need to put that texture in a different part of the wad. Place the tarmac texture file here: maps\resources\tarmacmap.tex

I don't want the same tarmac for the track and pit lane though, different textures - the track sectors use melborne2001_page_019.tex, the pitlane sectors use montreal2001_page_020.tex

A sneak peek...



gildoorf takes the credit for doing the building outlines in GP4 Builder, I have been grabbing images off Google Street View to create the above, which I am slowly working my way through alongside Barber. One or two graphics issues are cropping up where textures are concerned in game again (mainly the way the objects appear, sometimes floating) but I will deal with them later.

Oh, and let's say the track is no longer a smooth ride either.... ;)

Going to be honest, not a lot of progress since Christmas. At the moment it is rough around the edges, with some issues in game with 'floating' objects, however, my plan is to continue grabbing images from Street View, and do more land creation. And then, who knows.

But I would like to get a release... soon. Won't be perfect, but want to get it out there soon! (and also, for a good template for someone else to come along and make improvements for a V2 - that's my thinking anyway)
