Mgon's Steve Polak talks tyres and lap times with a Grand Prix 4 guru.

Grand Prix 4
Grand Prix 4

If you think of racing games with clout there are few that have the power to move the minds of the masses as the awesome Microprose Grand Prix series. Steve Polak was lucky enough to chat with Phil Gilbert, the producer of the game and the man who will be in charge of serious F1 fun for many of us.

MGON: What is new in this most awaited of sequels?

PHIL: I guess the new hardware engine, an awful lot of work went into that. On the art side using GPS data has been a challenge. Now the tracks look a lot more like the real thing, it is a real exponential step forward. I noticed a while ago (before GP4), I walked along the Monaco circuit and though to myself

part 2 of the above interview

MGON: Is there a ghost car for the current lap record holder?

PHIL: No it is split points around the track and there are two intermediate time points and then a final time point and you have to beat your competitor

For example Schumacher might be more aggressive in defending his line, not that he needs to do this often (laughs).
