I was a little eager to get this thread going, but I currently have no motivation to do any work. So I put this up.

It's a baptism of fire for Monsieur Pic, who's not yet driven a 2012-spec F1 car. But due to one of the most confusing pre-seasons for a while, nobody really knows who's where in terms of pace. Other than, of course, Red Bull at the front and Cosworth engine users at the back.

The lack of enthusiasm is disappointing. At this point in 2009 the Melbourne thread had been active for a full 4 months.

I have to say I'm really looking forward to this season, not quite in the way I did when I was about 12 years old ;) Yet 2012 has some really good ingredients that could make it into a long revered classic.

Six world champions on the grid three (Vettel, Button & Hamilton) of whom you'd expect to definitely have winning cars and a realistic shot at the championship. The other three (Alonso, Schumacher & Raikkonen) may yet throw the cat amongst the pigeons if the Ferrari isn't quite as shocking as commonly feared, if Mercedes have made a big enough step forward and if the Lotus is indeed the dark horse the winter championships proclaimed it to be.

Aside of the royal majesty of the champions we have the pretenders to the crown, Webber will be desperate to get on terms with Vettel, Rosberg equally desperate to finally win his first grand prix whilst Massa is under pressure on pain of losing his drive and ending up on the scrapheap of also rans.

The midfield promises to be wild with Force India boasting the most impressive driver pairing in di Resta & Hulkenberg. Grosjean will be eager to prove himself after his nightmare of 09, Sauber's Kobayashi & Perez will be there or there abouts. Helmut Marko will have his beady eyes on Ricciardo & Vergne and ready to draw his finger across his throat if they even show a hint of not being worthy of greater things.

Williams are reunited with Renault and.. Senna (if only in name). No one can expect great things from them yet we'll all be eager to see if they can bounce back into the midfield or if they'll be leap frogged by Caterham and Petrov's many rubles.

Bringing up the rear are the whacky racers.. can the Virgin Marussia finally overcome the dastardly HRT?

I can't wait!

YES F1 IS BACK! Its gonna be damn good to be hearing the sound of the engines once again, the off-season as always has been too long!

Im really interested to see where everyone pans out to be. I guess now the rumours finish and we get some good hard evidence of what teams are where. Personally my main hopes are that Mercedes join the front 3, Caterham join the midfield, and kimi and heikki both do a good job. If all those come true, im quite a satisfied man :).
Anyway, can't wait til friday.

Oh and guys, head over to the GPGAMES prediction thread to make your predictions for the race, you have until qualifying!

People are never happy sometimes though - in 2010 I started the Bahrain thread about 2 weeks before the race and someone said it was too early. :P
But you do have a point about the lack of enthusiasm. That Melbourne thread you mention was the last one that ran to a good length - most of the ones since have been under 10 pages, sometimes even under 5.

Good to see this thread up, maybe now that its f1 season again we will see more people back to the site here. I hope to be back more myself.

I am glad F1 is back but dont have that real big exciting feeling I used too, maybe once we get a little closer to Friday that will change. Does anybody buy F1 magazines anymore to read any of the previews for the upcoming season or just get there info online. The one thing I like about Austrlaia is the race here is late at night and a perfect excuse to cook up some chicken wings and have a couple cold ones and watch the race.

Im looking to see how Caterham get on this year myself. I think it will be a big waste of time for Marussi/Virgin outfit and HRT

Just stay up rather than get up. Problem solved. ;)

The reduced enthusiasm is due to the lack of free to air time available for F1.

I'm flying down on Friday morning, it'll be fascinating to see how accurate the form guide has been!

As Jim said, there are a lot of interesting storylines this year, so hopefully Red Bull are within reach to the teams behind and we get an interesting championship battle.

I was thinking about this thread yesterday, and was going to start it if it had not been started when I returned :p!

Disappointing news from my side, I will be missing the qualifying, and race :(. I have never missed the first live! I should say missing ANY F1 race is something of a no-no for me, especially considering it's the first, it's one of the best tracks producing some of the best races, and JB looks to have a shot! Then there's Kimi.... he's back! Unfortunately it is a friends birthday, and I will instead be getting drunk and will be out. Despite requests to kindly move the birthday, it has not happened :p! For me to be satisfied about missing the race, 1, or more of these options MUST happen...

1) I at least get some sort of lady action.
2) It is the best night out, EVER.
3) Jenson wins and I manage to stay away from the results until late Sunday when I can watch
4) Kimi wins and I manage to stay away from the results until late Sunday when I can watch
5) Senna wins and reveal Williams actually have a rocket ship, and I stay away from the results till Sunday ;)

Any of options 1 or 2, combined with either one of 3, 4, or 5 must happen!

On to the weekend, if the weather is on-off then all the better IMO! Oz is never a race where you can judge car and team performance properly, so it would be silly to assume the pecking order from this event. In term's of qualifying, I would not be surprised to see the exact top 5 we saw last year. My early prediction is a race long battle between RBR and Mclaren, and of course a battle between Renault, Ferrari and Merc.

Eager to see how much time Caterham have found. I cant imagine the difficulties of not only improving from the previous year, but improving to such a degree where you are able to get on par with those in front, despite them improving too!!`

Prediction for win... Lewis.

can't wait i have been down in melbourne seeing the sights since monday and literally bursting to i go to the track tomorrow, but still have to wait to friday for the f1. i think jenson will win with webber and schuey on the podium. hopefully ferrari and renault will be close and all together have a very close top 5 teams. for a funny reason im more excited about the midfield, i think its going to be very close with williams, torro rosso, sauber, force india and hopefully caterham. heres to a good race.

It'd be great to see Webber on the podium at least, hopefully he doesn't choke or have bad luck like he has at pretty much every AGP since his amazing result in 2002.

My prediction for the weekend is that Alan Joyce (CEO Qantas) will get a bigger boo if he turns up on the podium than Ted Baillieu (Victorian premier), which would be quite a feat considering the tendency of Australian crowds to boo state or federal leaders at sporting events.
