Bad news, BBC to share F1 with Sky Sports - boo hiss boo!

Posted by elio
I guess I'll switch it back to RTL... What's the point of broadcasting a race live, if the key moments happen during commercial breaks?

Just to rub salt in the wound, i went on sky's f1 page, had a browse of the circuit guides, and the hungaroring layout they are showing is the one from 2002, so only 9 years out of date ;)

Sky will almost certainly actively crack down on illegal internet streams faster than the BBC have done.

If Sky shows 11 races then it works out at £45 per race on a normal Sky Sports subscription.

Sky are showing all the races, with the BBC showing half the races alongside Sky, though of course if you only watch Sky when you can't watch BBC, then that's a valid argument.
Would they ever show only the first half of the champions league final?

LOL. Course they wouldn't. Whoever made this deal needs sacking pronto.

Do they show half of a TV series and call it quits? No.

50% of the races. What is the point in following that? All or none.

All through sixth form I've worked on Sundays, though thankfully there's been iPlayer. Then, at the point where we have fantastic coverage, great racing and I'm in uni so that I can watch the live broadcast instead of dodging media all Sunday, this happens. We do have Sky Sports at home, but I think I might just boycott it.

Well they also will show all practice and qualifying sessions supposedly, so there is some extra value there.

For the little TV I do watch, I'd at least like to think that my licence fee was paying towards something I do actually turn it on for.

So, BBC, what am I paying for exactly? Hopefully not another unfunny Walliams series of 'Come Fly With Me'. YAWN!

18 Sundays a year. That's all.

Why don't the BBC, for the other 10 races, syndicate Sky's footage and commentary? Surely this would not cost hardly anything.

Or have a small studio with Humphrey, Jordan & DC, and DC & Brundle commentating on Sky's feed, AKA the F1 digital days, I believe ITV had a studio and then Brundle & Allen voiced over the Digital feed?

Did sky have f1 a few years ago i cannot remember?

This is awful news. The only thing i hope is that when it says bbc will show highlights of other grand prixs it will be in the same way as bbc and eurosport over moto gp where eurosport show it after the race finishes but in full. I guess thats a rerun not highlights but if that happens i could live with this. We are loosing our sky sports package cos its extortionate and i imagine so many people being discouraged, sky will not recieve the same success and figures they think they are going to get that the bbc recieve now. I look forward to seeing sky get trounced in the ratings by bbc

kind of. it used to be on eurosport and both the bbc and eurosport showed the races live.
but that was early/mid 90's

at the end of the day, you can see how this has worked out.

The BBC want out of the F1 deal due to the cost
ITV dropped it because they couldn't afford it which would in all likelihood make it too expensive for C4 or C5.

Sky have wanted it for a while but there are too many clauses in the way of removing it completely from free to air tv.

So sky get together with the beeb and say, we'll take on a large chuck of the cost of the rights, in return from which you still show some races but make sure you show fewer races than us.
that way they get around the 'free to air' issue whilst ensuring that if you want to watch every race, you'll need a sky sports subscription.
There's something in the water re: Concorde Agreement.

Can't imagine the sponsors would be happy at losing free audiences in favour of PPV audiences.

but this is why we've ended up with this stupidly bizarre split.
so they can argue that its technically still on free to air tv.

though given the verging on hysterical reaction to this across the web, i guess its possible something might happen?
however it was similar when sky bought the rights to the cricket and you still need a sky subscription to watch that.
this sucks. I wont have sky at Uni so wont be able to watch all the races/practice anymore..... thanks Bernie..

well if it's any consolation, the qualy and race feeds on the website will be in HD this weekend, at long last!

It'd be a slight waste of money for Sky then, wouldn't it. ;)

As long as you have a computer, you'll be fine.

Such a shame this is happening. It has been fought off for such a long time though. So many circumstances have contributed to this. The BBC don't want to cut events like Wimbledon and they probably will need quite a budget for the olympics next year. Football and cricket fans have already been through this and sadly now it's our turn.

I remember during the 90's that there was an on-going joke about the BBC sports coverage and how it pretty much covered pub games and that was it. Things tend to go full circle and this time its Formula 1's turn to suffer. Not good. I can't see how it w

At least we still have the Renault World Series at Silverstone....you have to pay to watch that on TV but it's free to actually go to Silverstone. Long may that continue.

See you at there!

Ahh i see allthough as much as i love the coverage on bbc for the f1 i do feel it is excessive. I mean some of the stuff they send them out to do is more for themselves then giving me any entertainment but then that might just be me. Reminds me of top gear in that respect. I sure if they wanted to it would be a lot cheaper to run than it currently is.

I just thought something appeared on sky as a ppv channel dedicated to f1 for all of a season in the late 90's early 00's but i must of imagined it.
