Maldonado banned for life in Monaco

The 20-year old Pastor Maldonado may never race again in Monaco! He races in the Formule Renault 3.5.

The frenchmen Patrick Pilet had a spin at Casino. A marshall was already on track to help him under yellow flags. Maldonado crashed at full speed on the Dallara from Pilet and hit the marshall who broke his backbone! He isn't paralysed but has to revalidate for at least 1 year!

After the incident, Maldonado declared that he didn't see any yellow flags!

Yes, i read about this on autosport.com - apparently, the driver following Maldonado also claimed that there were no yellow flags, but the organisers were at pains to deny this.

The marshal is extremely lucky to not be paralysed - apparently he has a broken back in two places. Even so, a 9 race ban and a lifetime ban from Monaco is a bit extreme - i've certainly never heard of anything like that before.

No Monaco Ban for Maldonado

Further to a prior report published on Autosport-Atlas, we wish to clarify that RDD driver Pastor Maldonado was not banned for life from competing in Monaco.

Maldonado was penalised by the World Series by Renault race stewards and will serve a ban of nine races in total, including tomorrow's race at Monaco. No further action was taken against him.

Autosport-Atlas apologises for the error.

Sounds like a pretty major incident to me! A lengthy ban like that is a good course of action to take, but it isn't going help nurse a bloke backbone back to health of course...

In 2000 and 2001 marshalls were even killed in F1. There was no drastic penalty (if all) and certainly no penalty could have brought them back to live.

To be fair, though Vader, the marshalls at the GPs in Australia and Monza were in a very different position. I there are yellow flags waving on the circuit, the drivers should realise, and react accordingly. It's their job. Freak accidents may happen, but what happens under green flag situations is very different to yellow flag situations.

Well, we don't know if there really was a yellow flag. Maldonado says there wasn't and the driver following him backs him up. Maybe they forget to show the flag and now try to hush up their mistake.

There are few things more serious a racing driver can do than speed through a yellow flag and cause an accidents. But the severity of the penalty and the emerging doubt over whether the yellow flag was actually shown properly makes you wonder whether the organisers gave him an excessive penalty as a knee-jerk reaction. It seems to me he's being punished more for the consequences than for the crime.

Compared to Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher at Brazil in 2003, for example, this is a substantially harsher penalty.

i guess some drivers miss flags. if rubens cant see an irish priest 6 feet in front of his car, then perhaps some guys get so absorbed

ye, schumacjer should've been banned at brazil - that was a double yellow and he slid into the demo pit where a lot of marshalls were

When racing and you get into the 'zone', you are only concentrating on the track and nothing else. Its very easy to not see flags.

yup did that while racing karts. I missed the chequred flag at the end of practice and did a lap more than everyone else :S To be fair though the car had just gone off in front of me and the one behind touched me so by the time I had the thing under control i had passed the start / finish line. Luckily the clerk or the course didn't have much to say

i think the whole situation is typically french! (not trying to sound racist but im sure it will)

The french officials make a rash decision and then it is proved wrong. But instead of swallowing their pride, they are ruining the career of a promising young driver.
