Official 2014 Japanese Grand Prix Thread #ForzaJules

Rain and wind meant that the helicopter couldn't take off.

This doesn't look good, got everything crossed that Jules comes through this.

Weather conditions. Simple as that.

In the Sky coverage I couldn't even see Bianchi's car - did he end up under the truck? Seriously hope Jules is alright.

Apparently the weather was too bad for the helicopter to start. Question is why they didn't stop the race earlier then...

Thanks for the clarification on the heli.

It does not look like the truck ran over the car, thank God, but there is really not much left of that Marussia. From the positioning of the wreck, it looks like the car connected with the back of the truck. That's direct impact on metal, where it should be triple rows of tyre barrier. The height of the engine box on the truck is not designed to be impact friendly on an f1 car.

sutil just confirmed that bianchi hit the truck

The helicopter never made it to the track. Ted Kravitz was reporting from the compound where the helicopter is kept (it was taking off during his notebook after qualifying). Sky broadcast the FIA representative briefing the press about Bianchi, so it's not just reporting, it's the official line.
Any idea why SC wasn't deployed immidiately after Sutil's crash? Jesus, I've seen the same at the Hockenheimring this year and I still can't get what the hell they were thinking of:

Marshalls removing the car at the main straight with all other cars running nearby :-o :-(

Gary Hartsteins tweets are disheartening. I shall refrain from repeating them here. Those that want to read them know how to find them.

That's really strange. AFAIK they are not allowed to race, if the chopper cannot perform a medevac. :(

I'm starting to wonder if Charlie knew about the crane. I'm sure I read somewhere that the SC must be thrown to allow course vehicles onto the track if they are in a dangerous area, so perhaps it was a decision taken at the corner, not in race control?

Ouch, @Lotus_F1Team tweeted "cheer up" regarding the pictures focussing on the Marussia mechanics looking worried. Obviously been deleted now and they've apologised. That guy's got to feel pretty bad right now.

Ted was saying at the time that they can race without the medical helicopter if the road is sufficient and they have a police escort.

Sutil: "Situation with Bianchi is critical. Hope he is in good hands. I was standing right next it. Don't want to talk about details."

As I alluded to earlier, Morbidelli went off there in 1994, Brundle followed a couple of laps later and badly broke a marshalls leg. It's one of the reasons Brundle is so concerned of tractors and diggers on the track during a race - he narrowly missed one himself on that day.
New info from Kravitz - they chose not to use the helicopter for medical reasons, it appears.

Kravitz has just said the medical helicopter was there and has taken off, but that Bianchi was transported by road ambulance. Perhaps they wanted to get him to a local hospital first and perhaps it doesn't have a helipad?

I've still not even heard the BBC mention that Bianchi is on his way to hospital yet (I'm viewing both Sky & BBC postshows at the moment, so might have missed it).

Would be more to prevent any further trauma if he has a severe head injury.

Ted Kravitz on Sky just mentioned that the truck in question has a substantial dent right where Bianchi would've hit it.

This is getting more horrible by the second right now. :(

Yeah, Brundle mentioned additional pressure from going thousands of feet in the air, but then Kravitz said they wouldn't get that high due to the cloud cover anyway. It's all rather irrelevant at the moment. Either Bianchi was stable enough to be transported to hospital or the circuit doesn't have sufficient facilities or personnel to help him.
The Hockenheim non-SC-call was far less dangerous than here. On the inside of a corner in the dry, without needing a tractor, I can understand why they didn't call a SC there. Here, on the outside of a much faster corner in the wet, it is crazy that race control didn't call for it.

I am fearing the worst to be honest, but everything crossed that there will be some good news.

They had to cut the car to extract him. That is not all that uncommon when the medical team wants to be sure that they do not risk spinal problems. So that by itself does not relate much more than we already know.
