Too little other info to really offer a fair comment though.

I had very harshly privately presumed, given that she'd never race competitively again, that this was her struggling to come to terms with that fact, but the police have said it appears to be natural causes.

The natural causes appear to be linked with the head trauma that she experienced in that testing shunt. I don't like to speculate, but it certainly seems that way.

My first impulse was suicide, but I didn't want to say that straight off the bat whilst I didn't know any facts other than her death. My initial conclusion seems wide of the mark given the results of the autopsy.

The head truma and neurological damage would now be the obvious conclusion, however as I know from personal experience unexplainable deaths in young (or relatively young) people are not unheard of either

It's just all rather unfortunate, and life in general really is not fair at all.

Sad news indeed. The thread of life can be stronger than corded steel at times but at moments like these we realize how fragile all of life can be. How even seemingly innocent mistakes can have devastating consiquenses.
The premature death of this brilliant athlete is a testament to the saying that, ' therefore but the Grace Of God go I!' You will be sadly missed Maria.
