Amazing how such a hideous car can be turned into a beauty with a simple change of paintjob!! :-o

Will Tyson sums it up very well here - [richlandf1.com]

"The Lotus design has two complete crash structures: each prong is made up of a carbon-aluminium honeycomb composite that can withstand the forces applied to it during the FIA crash tests.

"In the regulations, the FIA mandate a single, 9000mm2 cross sectional area, complete with a 50mm length tip that must be centred around 185mm above the reference plane. These two numerical values state the requirements for the nose structure.

"Lotus have successfully skirted around this regulation by creating an off-centred “tusk” that meets the regulations on the right side, with a shorter tusk added on the left. As the left tusk is shorter, possibly by around 50mm (the length of the tip), it is not deemed to be part of the regulation that outlines the nose requirements – it is merely an extension."

I think that she's a beauty. Certainly the least offensive take on the new rules we've seen so far.

i am lolling at the ferrari. the plain silver mclaren looks gorgeous, and i like their nose most from all we've seen. hope they release a model of it in the test livery.

Not too keen on that. Prefer the McLaren.

The Ferrari reminds me of this...

Not too keen on the Ferrari. I like the McLaren better. I do like the variation though, it's been a long time since I could recognize a team by its car shape. I am looking forward to someone explaining the technical benfits of all approaches.

So now we have a proboscis monkey, a stag beetle and a beluga whale.

You can now place your bets on what animal Sauber have chosen.

That Ferrari is hideous. It looks nice from the front but just ridiculous from the side - like someone fat sat on it.

Regarding the Lotus... when was the last time we had an asymetrical car? (BAR '99 doesn't count).

I really like the Ferrari, though I wanted it to be the F166 Turbo. I'm keen to see how well the nose works, since the fingers, despite our hatred, are the best solution to pass air underneath the car. Also as Craig Scarborough pointed, that front wing is really simple. Only three elements plus the box wing. Maybe they removed all the flaps to keep the final design secret until Jerez?

All in all, I like it a lot. But nothing, nooooothing will ever be as beautiful looking and sounding as the 412T2 ;-)

It's funny how everyone on this forum has such difference in opinion on this year's cars. I really don't mind the McLaren and Williams... but the Lotus and the Ferrari? Bleugh! It's not often that I don't like a car (especially a Ferrari), but unfortunately this is one of those times!

A bit of a girly comparison, maybe, but the Ferrari nose reminds me a lot of a dolphin. (or maybe I'll settle with a sawtooth shark)

EDIT: and another completely mirrored opinion - I think it looks far better from the side. If it weren't for that massive lump on the nose, it'd be a beauty.

With all the cars we've seen so far (to the detail which has been revealed) the actual bodies of the cars are really nice. Especially the McLaren and Lotus, without the initially shocking visual of the finger/tusk nose arrangements both cars would be stunningly beautiful.

Ferrari's nose solution so far is by far the least offensive.. and I actually think overall it fits in with the rest of the car to look thoroughly badass.

Also this artist's concept of the McLaren... is starting to look fairly well envisaged as well, if only on the wrong car.

IIRC some teams had asymmetrical sidepods when KERS was introduced.

Didn't that result in them getting disqualified?

Yes. It was their interpretation to a rule at the time where the wing could only be so wide. So they simply put two on.

I don't like asymmetrical cars. Why not just extend the fake one by another 5cm?
