Liverpool very lucky to get a point there. Never a pen for me. Didn't like the way Gerrard turned around to the ref and shouted "PENALTY" at him.

Yeah I didn't think it was a penalty, there was minimal contact if any. He only feel because he jumped over the player and didn't land correctly.

lucky Liverpool, now where have I heard that before?

The rule states that if there is CONTACT OF ANY MAGNITUDE in the area which obstructs a player from scoring a goal, a penalty should be awarded.

Yes, the contact was minimal, and Gerrard made the most of it, bit it's HIS JOB (as a striker and as team Captain) to bring any infringement of the rules to the referee's attention. I think it would have been unprofessional to have done anything else.

Unless there wasn't any contact whatsoever, and the reason Gerrard was running so awkwardly was to avoid the tackle.

but imagine him leaving his feet in place just to get hit and perhaps injured, quite stupid. The referee should award the foul due to potentially dangerous play (and no I didn't see the play)

to my un-educated eye soccer (sorry Football) players quite often play for the penalty (unsportingly) rather than actually attempt to score legitimately. see Grosso in the World Cup as an example.

soccer (sorry Football) would be better if there was a bit more bash and barge. would be a lot more fun to play at least ;)

didn't see this particular incident, but sounds like your generic ridiculous soccer (sorry Football) weak penalty. get up ya princess!

before anyone says anything, yes I'm still bitter about the World Cup and how Australia went out :)

Chelsea and Man U had good wins didn't they?

I don't think he made the most of it. He didn't dive or even look for the penalty or anything. He didn't throw his arms up and scream out and protest or anything. Infact, he tried to avoid the penalty situation in the first place by attempting to jump over the tackle.

Which deserves a mention, as in this case (not that you'd know, being an Aussie I think?) the ref let play carry on for a few moments to see if an advantage could be claimed. To his credit Gerrard did try to stay on his feet - once any advantage had gone, the ref brought it back. I don't really agree with the decision of a penalty - it was soft at best, but I can see the case for giving it - Gerrard did have to hurdle a rogue tackle and lost out because of that. Whether it's covered by the rules or not I'm not sure, but I guess I see the case for a claim anyway.

Meh, there was a worse decision than that anyway. The penalty against Watford's Powell was a complete joke. Major credit to the guy for trying to laugh it off rather than walking up to the ref/assistant and reminstrating like hell.

For the people that didn't see the Gerrard foul:

I think it would have been ignored if Liverpool had not been a goal down, but since they were losing 1-0 its easier for the ref to give a penalty.

and since the Watford one (or two) got mentioned:

I'd give it a PK for Liverpool, can clearly see the avoiding of the tackle took Gerrard's balance out.

And the Watford one is upsetting, happens in Brazil many times too and I can't begin to describe the anger hot . The only hope is that the club will take it to the federation and the footy federation won't act like bribed pricks

THey can't complain. What would the fa do? There is nothing they can do. They can't change the score of the game, that would be rediculous.

Come on the ARSE!

I'm very happy Chelsea lost, especially as the Gunners could only manage a draw against Villa. Here's hoping the game against Man City goes a little better!

Ben Thatcher is a disgrace and a thug [video.google.co.uk]

:o

Harry Redknapp has urged the Football Association to intervene in the current furore surrounding Ben Thatcher and mete out appropriate punishment.

Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes was left hospitalised after Thatcher caught him with a forearm smash in Wednesday's game at Eastlands.

Mendes had to spend a night in Manchester Royal Infirmary after having a fit as a result of being hit into the advertising hoardings following Thatcher's disgraceful challenge.

An unsighted referee Dermot Gallagher produced only a yellow card, which means under normal circumstances The FA would be unable to intervene and issue any kind of retrospective punishment.

However, due to the severity of the incident, The FA have decided to launch an investigation with Redknapp firmly of the opinion that appropriate action needs to be taken.

"I don't want to see the police getting involved. It is football's problem and the game should deal with it,'' said Redknapp.

"Let's hope that The FA can take the most appropriate action possible.

"It is one of the worst incidents I've ever seen in the game.

"Pedro is disgusted by what has been done to him. I know Ben Thatcher and off the field he is genuinely a good lad off the pitch but on the pitch he sometimes loses it.

"There is no way I can defend what he did. You cannot defend it and I've told Stuart Pearce (City's manager) he can't defend it either. There is no way of defending it.

"Stuart is apologetic. Of course, he is but something has got to be done. Let's be honest, it was brutal."

Following the failure of Gallagher to spot the incident fully, Redknapp has called for the use of cameras, which he believes would eradicate any such errors in the future.

"What football should be doing is giving the fourth official a small monitor which he can have by him at the side of the pitch and tell the referee he has made mistake,'' he added.

"Dermot is as honest as the day is long but on Wednesday he made a big mistake giving only a yellow card.

"While Pedro was being treated, the fourth official could have told Dermot he had seen a better view of the incident and told him what really happened.

"This is the way football should be going. It was clear to me what was going to happen. Thatcher hit Pedro with all he had and I could see it happening five seconds before it did.

"We don't know when Pedro will be able to play again, but it could be some time. Then we have got to see how he comes back.

"All our lads were sickened by it. They did well not to react badly and carry on playing. We don't want anything like this in football. We are there to play, not hurt each other."

Ban him for at least 18 months from football, also prohibited of practicing with the team.

And didn't the lineman see that? :-o
