Erm, well what can you say, 7 minutes into the second half and we've had 3 sendings off. Absolutely mindblowing game even if the score is only 1-1

This referee is a tw@t. Brilliant game though! USA have really got the bit between their teeth, but no way should they be down to 9 men!

When you think the game settles down it just immediately throws up another surprise.

The referee has been perfect with all sending offs, there's no arguing :-o

I am going to check ESPN now and see the silly journalists writing crap and so on ;)

Mastroeni did NOT deserve to be sent off. Pope's offences were no worse than others which did not get carded, I don't blame Bruce Arena for getting mad. And McBride was passive! It should have been 2-1 to the USA, they've been cheated.

All three were sendings off - first two were awful and then pope was already on a yellow and just asking for it, plus it was from behind.

He was active for that offside goal too - stuck his leg out plus obstructing keepers view / possible movement. Also, if he is not active, what is he doing on the pitch?

Define passive. I don't call standing between the guy shooting and the 'keeper, while trying to get a flick himself, passive.

How on earth can you say Mastroeni didn't deserve to get sent off? Pirlo is lucky he doesn't have a broken ankle.

Goal should have been disallowed as well. If standing infront of the keeper and blocking his vision of the shot isn't active then I don't know what is.

I think some of the refeering has been poor in this World Cup though. Every mistimed tackle, every shirt pull is a yellow card. I'm suprised we haven't had more games ending up with 9 v 10.

I support Daniel and Gav here, absolutely right (Y). Buffon had his view impaired by McBride and he had also to base his decision of going for the ball while considering McBride could touch it and change the direction of the ball. And all that coming after those two ground tackles between the American and the Italian (those are awful! Someone always gets hurt), but I can't say it was a foul.

And on ESPN a guy with a WC blog dismissed the first US sending off (after vehemently agreeing with the Italian one) and called Pope's send off ridiculous, but that just shows he knows nothing as that was a foul for a card. Shame about the US not losing though :(

edit: MWB, just because someone mistimed a tackle doesn't mean they don't deserve a card ;-). Taking someone's feet out without the ball deserves one!

I can sort of see why people are annoyed with Pope's sending off. It's one of those that deserved a final warning more than anything.

Yeah but there's mistimed (genuinely going for the ball and just catching the player slightly late. The ref should give you a talking to) and then there's malicious. I've just heard the referee that did the game tonight was actually suspended in the last World Cup for "irregularities".

Having just watched it again, I concede that the goal shouldn't stand. Still standing firm about Mastroeni's tackle though, as has been said it should have been a caution (yellow card) and a warning, becuase although it was dangerous it was accidental. Shouldn't have been a straight red.

Accidental? He went for his standing leg, nowhere near the ball or anything.

That's globilization for you - half of the German team is of Polish origin and half of the US team sounds rather Italian. Not long until everyone plays against himself. :p

Locke, I play against Americans. Those tackles are normal in games and people complain about getting a simple yellow card with them. My second year at uni I got a tackle a bit worse than Mastroeni's one and it caused a high ankle sprain (had I not lifted my foot off the ground as soon as I saw the kid flying towards me it would have broken it), one of the worst ankle injuries and I could feel it for almost two months. That could have broken the ankle as well, it was very unnecessary (come on, it was the attacking side of the field), very harsh even if it was well timed as it would still count as a foul and a yellow card for going with his soles up like that, and completely careless. If refs don't punish those plays then you'll only see good players getting hurt all the time. Van Basten had to retire due to those injuries when he was still fairly young and Zico miraculously didn't retire from a criminal tackle as well. I've said it before, the refs job is to protect the player in the field, and many times I've seen cases where because the referee wouldn't take a stand against dirty plays a fight broke out between players and it only escalates.
