Locke, I play against Americans. Those tackles are normal in games and people complain about getting a simple yellow card with them. My second year at uni I got a tackle a bit worse than Mastroeni's one and it caused a high ankle sprain (had I not lifted my foot off the ground as soon as I saw the kid flying towards me it would have broken it), one of the worst ankle injuries and I could feel it for almost two months. That could have broken the ankle as well, it was very unnecessary (come on, it was the attacking side of the field), very harsh even if it was well timed as it would still count as a foul and a yellow card for going with his soles up like that, and completely careless. If refs don't punish those plays then you'll only see good players getting hurt all the time. Van Basten had to retire due to those injuries when he was still fairly young and Zico miraculously didn't retire from a criminal tackle as well. I've said it before, the refs job is to protect the player in the field, and many times I've seen cases where because the referee wouldn't take a stand against dirty plays a fight broke out between players and it only escalates.
