Still not convinced about England, there are too narrow its almost like watching a training ground game and no ones sure who's on who's side.

it could be England-Germany in round of 16, that would be an interesting match ;-)

WOOOO!!! That's two, we're through!

An abject first 60 minutes because Sven's formation sucked. Finally the penny dropped and on come the wingers, Gerrard and Lampard allowed to push forward into the box and Beckham dropping back to a holding midfielder. THAT is how England play best, that is how it should ALWAYS be!!

I bet he hasn't learnt by Sweden though. England don't play defensive football.

England were bloody awful until the goals.

That ref was too yellow card happy :( Hislop weren't even time wasting, and on one occasion, the player got the ball and owen trod on his leg, so should be free kick to t&t if anything, instead to my amazement, free kick to england (which they nearly scored from) and a yellow card to the t&t player :S. Still, a lot of the t&t stuff were fouls yes, but you can't really say they were a dirty side.

Stern john was so unlucky not to score - he didn't need to be slightly offside. It looked like he might have been a bit, which is a shame, cos he didn't need to be.

Gerrard's goal was good :)

Did anyone think crouch was climbing a bit for his goal?

Lampard and joe cole were awful again.

Yup, we were a bit lucky, but we did deserve to win. Lampard was again a bit anonymous, and takes Gerrard down with him. I really would drop Lampard for Carrick - a so much more clear-cut line-up. I'd drop Beckham and play Lennon too, but that's never gonna happen, and I'd probably regret that one in reflection if I was boss ;)

Still. Fact. We've got a 100% record, haven't conceded a goal, and we're into the 2nd round.

WTF, England didn't play badly! For the first 60 minutes they played good football, save for the one lapse which resulted in a T&T corner, they were just restrained like a caged animal unable to attack properly because the manager was telling them to play defensively. As soon as he got his brain into gear and changed things around, the lads were allowed to show their true (attacking) potential.

P.S. @ Dan - Lampard was awful, yes. But Cole!? He did good today. And you say "again", got to disagree on that one, Cole was the one man who gave England anything at all in their opening game.

Well to clarify, I just thought cole wasted shots and was greedy to be fair. His tackling was a bit crap too, but that isn't really as important.

DAMN!! :( Ljungberg just got Sweden a goal in the 89th minute to go 1-0 against Paraguay. Now there's still a risk England won't win the group... We;re not ready for Germany yet.

I watched half the game but England should stop wanting to cross every single ball from anywhere. If they put the ball by the area or in it through the ground they will score many more goals.

even if England had already won the group today, Germany can still win group A if they beat Ecuador ;-)

I'd drop Beckham and play Lennon too,

Beckham's deliveries are pretty much the only time you threaten so I dont think thats a good idea. Lennon's great at beating the fullback but his crosses are poor more often than not and never in the class of Beckham's.
England were pretty shocking really, they have lots of world class players but I dont think i've ever seen them put in a world class team performance.

I'd love to see us play Germany in the second round.. They look as mediocre as England does.

Yup, fair enough - that's why I said it would probably be the wrong thing to do. ;-)

I just feel Beckham doesn't contribute that much to the game. We rely too heavily on him, and as we have very little going down the left, we need to get some width somehow. It was no co-incidence that as soon as Lennon came on the game opened up. It doesn't help that Sven simply refuses to drop Beckham, save for injury, no matter what other options there are.

I am a bit biased though anyway - I've been biggin up Lennon since 2002 ;)

I thought Germany looked a lot better against Poland than England did today, they played much better attacking football with some actual variety instead of England's one dimensional Wimbledon style long balls or deep crossing approach for most of the game, they cant defend though so they wont get far.
