I can't say I've paid much attention to the build-up of the World Cup, but it's not far away now. Who do you think is in with a shout?

I'd say Portugal have got a chance - I would say Brazil, but I don't think they have a great record in Europe...

i think brazil and argentina are the favourite as usual but the czech-republic could be a big threat for the top.

they are the only non-european team to have won a WC in Europe (Sweden '58)

for me, being an argentinian, i'd say Argentina, of course!

The form book has to favour Brazil, but I have a sneaking suspicion that England will surprise a lot of people this year. Here's why...

1) Almost every other major competitive nation is having issues with injuries, quarrels, old players getting the nod over talented youngsters, etc. so no-one is going to be full strength.

2) Our key asset, Wayne Rooney, is not fit. Far from killing our chances, this makes us much stronger. The rest of the team will rise to fill the gap, become closer etc. (for an example of how this works, see Ireland in the 2002 World Cup).

3) With Gerrard, Beckham and Lampard playing in midfield, we have probably the strongest midfield in the World. :) Hopefully this will translate into possession, and we have a striker who is world-renowned for his ability to convert possession into goals (Michael Owen).

4) Everyone in the World, regardless of experience and knowledge, will underestimate Theo Walcott. This lad has pace that even Owen will be jealous of, and has finishing skills which rank him up there with the best. His downfall may be if he's crowded out by the defence, and if his nerves get to him.

5) The manager is leaving at the end of the tournament, but his successor is already holding a key role within the team. There is a strong sense of community and dedication in our squad. The players believe they can win, and whilst some may say this belief is misplaced, it is at least a strong weapon to carry into battle.

So I think that England have a chance at winning, and I'm not saying that simply out of hope or patriotism.

Why does the form guide favour Brazil? The last time the World Cup was this side of the pond they were dreadful (lucky to get past Denmark, even luckier against Holland for whom Kluivert missed a miltitude of sitters), finally got their comeuppance in the final.

Previous time in Europe Paulo Rossi single-handedly destroyed "the best Brazil team ever". In 1974 they were well beaten by Holland, and also lost to Poland. In 1966 they didn't even get out of the group stage.

So the last four World Cup tournaments in Europe brazil have only shone briefly in 1982. And the last tournament Brazil played in Europe, the Confederations cup last year they were destroyed by Argentina 4-1. To me that means the form book certainly doesn't point to them.

What about the five stars?

Eins zwei drei vier fünf sechs sieben acht neun zehn
One two three four five six seven eight nine ten
Один два три четыре пять шесть семь восемь девять десять

I still think England have a good chance, I'd be happy if they managed to get to the semis though. Should be exciting, hoping for some upsets!
