R.I.P

A very dark day for Motorsport :(

I was there today and was cheering him all the way, this is such a shock.

My thoughts are with his family as they have lost an incredibly talented young son.

I hope more attention can finally be given to the severe dangers of loose wheels in motorsport as they seem to be becoming ever more common, even in F1.

I dont wish to bring controversy to the thread, but as has been discussed on other forums... the initial crash in which the rear wheel detatcehd itself was not a heavy hit and yet the wheel came off. Even on Surtees crash, it was a rather slow crash and yet his left rear wheel came off. Has the car had sufficient crash testing and does it account for such situations, ie wheels coming off. I am shocked and rather scared that Surtees wheel came off. We only have to look back to Senna to know what damage they can do, and now we have further evidence (without needing it). So I ask, was this avoidable with a more stronger structure, stronger teathers? Like I said, I dont want to turn the thread or bring controversy or an argument so dont bite my head off for it.

RIP Henry :(

I don't normally watch much motorsport aside from F1, especially not when it involves having a nice lie in. But for some reason I was really intruiged about F2 and felt compelled to watch today. I find that slightly wierd. That's the first ever fatal crash I've seen live and it's not a nice experience. My thoughts are with the family :(

When you crash, you want stuff to break, else you'll receive that kinetic energy.
Chains (like used in f1) could have helped, maybe...

18 years is way too young.

My condolences.

Oh agreed, the bigger the bit the more the energy disapated. However once the wheel came lose it seemed there was not alot to stop it straying onto the track. Once the wheel was off that was that. Whereas we see in F1 crashes that tear wheels off but they still remain part of the car. Just seemed to me in both crashes it was too easy for the wheels to come properly apart from the chassis.

edit - just to make clear, my point is not for unbreakable teathers but at least some strong insight into how on what looked like a rather ordinary racing accident did two right rear wheels come off.

just sifting through my silverstone photos from 2007 and found the photo I had taken with him, cripes, really brings a shuddery thought. really nice, down to earth guy he was. chatted with everyone.

what are the chances? :(

Tragic loss.

A very unfortunate reminder that death will always be something that drivers and fans have to face, no matter if you live in the 60's or in 2009.

RIP Henry Surtees. My Condolences to the family.

Regarding the wheel coming off, shouldn't it be atatched with "wires" to the car in order for such accidents not to happen? I tought that all the series had that security rule since the tragic events that killed a few spectators in 1999 at Lowe's Motor Speedway when a wheel flew into the stands during an Indycar Series Event.

Tragic loss - RIP Henry Surtees and I can only imagine how difficult it must be for John and Jane.

Racer - I dont remember any binding legislation being put into place post-Lowe's outside of the US, but I do remember the FIA putting a lot of research into it after Monza 2000 and Melbourne 2001. Worryingly we seem to be seeing more and more tyres coming off at the moment though - although usually in higher-energy crasehes than this seemed to be.

This is very bad news to hear. Henry Surteees was a good driver, and he, like anybody else, doesn't deserve this. My condolences also go out to all his friends and family. May he rest in peace.

Awful accident. Shuddering looking at it now. Agree with chet, you have to wonder about the debris coming off the first car after such an innocuous initial crash.

I was discussing this at another place, all the energy in that car went into that wheel, not even an F1 wheel tether could have stopped it. Just a horrendous freak accident that it bounced accross the track at the same time he came.

Still absolutley terrible.
