Higher up where?

anyway i quite enjoyed the race, i wouldnt call it poor for the first 120 laps... thats what RP races are about, just running around avoiding accdents until the last 60laps or so.

Gutted that Martin didnt win.

Well as far as I know drafting wont get them higher up anywhere else other than the order?

higher up the track? as u probably know now, daytona is a 2-3 wide track ;)

and yeah the ONLY way to pass is to draft. and drafting is a form of art. i seen a video onboard with jeff gordon, and it was crazy, every second nearly, he was changing between looking in the mirror and looking out the windscreen. mroe often looking in the mirror.

Ive seen various drafting techniques used in karting on superkarts... and thats quite immense, and often the worst place to be is at the front ;)

Front is fine in NASCAR as the line pushes itself - literally. It's not a slipstream as such, but if you get a group of 5 cars working together, just staying in line with no overtaking, they will go much faster than a similar group side-by-side. And they bump-draft, touching the bumper of the guy infront, pushing them along to keep every single little bit of speed they can. NASCAR can look boring but it's pretty damn special stuff if you sit down and take on what's going on.

Michigan 500 was always the same for me too when Indycar went there before IRL came along, and even afterwards. I'm sure most have seen the finish in 2000 between Montoya and Andretti - even mid-race had me sitting on the edge of my seat - the guys do 240mph in the things... it had me scared sitting in my chair. Just awesome.

Ovals are anything but boring, period.

Gav I remember the Michigan 500 in 2000, it was the first oval race I ever watched. It was just astounding to see such a battle for the lead, not just at the end but through the entire race indeed. Have to admit that I don't care too much for the shorter ovals though.

Shorter ovals tend not to produce the massive draft and constant passing that the shorter ovals do, so its understandable how you can enjoy 1 and not the other.

Passed 19 cars in around 15 green flag laps (sometimes more than 1 per corner). Accidently tapped Pruett which put a downer on the whole thing. Clearly caught out by just how much later he could brake than almost anyone else. Nailed the restarts, nailed the braking zones, and when a small fuel filler clip failed meaning he dropped from the lead to 21st he wasnt phased and just powered through a field of top road racers to get to the lead. Pulled off some stunning passes, 3 wide into Turn 1, from miles back into turn 1, even down the middle of 2 cars. Outstanding. An amazing drive.

i just thought the other corners were ermm some shitty little turns... or something.

i guess this has showed his driving talent quite well.

now its just ovals for him.

Its was amazing to see how much later JPM could brake!

I obv dont know much about the physics of nascar racing etc, but imo that was a fair move.

Considering should that Pruett guy have expected a move ?? I mean going by JPM's early pace and moves ??

After reading about that race it really seems asif Montoya just owned the track lol

no, you don't pass a guy driving for the same team like that

Its a rookie error. JPM misjudged just how much later he was braking, dived to the right so not to drive into the back of him and still ended up nudging him. Not a delbrate action, a complete accident. Its what happens when you spend years in a single seater and swap to something you havent driven before.

JPM and his crew chief apologised before the race was over, and after.

Pruetts bitching is a bit ironic since hes not exactly known for being a fair driver. A few times hes punted people off (seen it with my own eyes too) and not apologised.

gareth, the headlights are stickers. Fake because cleaning up the glass under caution would take forever. They stopped putting real ones on in the 60s and 70s.

chet it was the road course minus the top loop.

That, without the chicane on the main stright. The final corner is only banked at 1 or 2 deg now.

Ahhh, I see. Something I'd not seen or noticed before. The V8 Supercars have working headlights and quite often someone making a charge up the field will have the headlights blazing which can look pretty cool.

Cheers dave!
