Wiscombe Park National Hill Climb *56K warning*

Posted by bestobritish
Went along to my local hill climb track today to see the national championship, bugger me those cars fly,! One of them was ment to have an f1 3.5 v10, TC and a semi auto shift, all this on a 1km track with no run off and trees either side! Along with the National Championship cars there was some great looking Ford Angelias, mk1/2 escorts and a crazy modified Moris Minor!

Any way all was good till the afternoon when there was a f'in huge shunt going into the last hairpin where I was stood. The driver, Rob Turnbull, lost it under braking and ended up on the bank 5 yards from spectators after clipping the inside of the corner. I wont post the pics ive got cos i dont know if hes ok yet, though he was concious as he was put into the ambulance. I went straight after it was cleared up, tbh it scared the @#$%& out of me and obviously I didnt really feel like watching anymore. Up until that point I had been considering taking up marshalling (spelling?!) but this unfortunatly put me off :-\

Any way the pics

Great pics you have there. I hope the driver is okay...
cheers m8. Ive just found out the driver escaped with nothing more than a broken lower left leg. Its a miracle considering the speed he was doing, the height the car reached and then the sudden stop in the impact. I feel pretty relieved now.

Now i know hes ok il show the pic where the car landed, the very left of the pic is where the crowd n I was stood! :-\

In them sort of tight courses a kart will kick a cars ass any day. Put them on a wide circuit then the kart will be on its back foot, well a gearbox will take some out running :p.

My local track allow the aberdeen car club to hold meetings there. These people do hill climbs and all sorts yet around the track a kid (8-12) in a cadet will thrash the times of there cars. The hill climb guys even miss out the tightest part of the track :p

yea i can imagine that actually having a very low centre of gravity is what you need around the bends, they would only lose out on the straight.

What kind of speeds do your karts do?

You'd be hard pushed on most hill climbs to out accelerate a kart. Got to remember ready to go a 125 national gearbox has to weigh at least 175kgs with driver to be classed as a finisher under MSA rules. The last kart I raced Jnr Max (one on the right) was capable of about 70-80mph, never really sure exactly as we don't really use speedos just rev counters, temp gauges and lap timers. It revved to about 14,000 if I remember correctly. A 125 national gearbox would be crazy on a hill climb, them things are just mental.

I can never remember the size of engine of the gearbox but years ago before TC in F1 these gearbox karts used to out accelerate an F1 car till a certain point where obviously the F1 engine kept picking up.

How long ago was that, because there is no way they would let you enter one now.

ohh a while ago now, i was like 6 or 7! im now 18.

from the pics i saw there were a few single seaters... but yeh as kiren said, a kart would kick ass and that was what happend ;)

"Trulli was slowing down like he wanted to have a picnic" LOL
i think the karts i saw at Castle Combe yesterday would have kicked anythings asses lol. They were 250cc and 125cc superkarts and i was told the 250 can reach up to 130mph :o

They probably would. Although I'd doubt they'd count your time but most places I would have thought would let you do a demonstration. My Dad and a couple of his friends did one in there 125 gearboxes and the only things that managed to hang to them were the single seaters, but in the end there times weren't counted.
