After watching the Nurburgring GP2 race...

... I've only just realised how boring F1 has become. The Nurburgring race had me gripped. I only watched it because I was bored at the time - now I think I'll watch each race and enjoy it more than F1! Just a shame I only get to watch it a week after it happened :(

Re: After watching the Nurburgring GP2 race...

The thing with F1 is that it's the pinnacle of motorsport. As Dave said, there are drivers all over the world (ex USA mostly) that want to get a drive in it. Anyway, whether there is close racing or not doesn't matter, if you look closely, it's not just about the racing, it represents leaps in technology in motorsport and IIRC, F1 has been a benchmark for many things that have made their own path in lower Formula's. I may well be on my own, but for me, F1 isn't just about the racing, the teams are under huge pressure after every GP to improve the car and make it faster than their rivals. In something like A1GP and GP2, this doesn't happen, it's completely down to the drivers. Yeah alright, that's not a bad thing I'll admit, but it's pretty awesome what the mechanics and techs can do to a car in 3 weeks which suddenly make it tenths of a second faster than their rivals, or in some cases as we saw with Renault in the last part of 2005, makes up the gap to Mclaren in 2 races and puts them on a much even footing, pratically giving Renault the championship thanks to poor reliability from Mclaren.

All these driver oriented series set out to prove who's the best driver.

F1 sets out to prove which team is best when matched with a group of already proven drivers.

Every era of F1 has offered something different in terms of the style of racing. For my way of looking at it the number of "manouvers", be they passing or crashing, is inconsiquential. I would be willing to bet that anybody that visits this forum would gladly watch 22 fighter jets fly over-head at full tilt and make the tightest possible turns. Whether or not they pass eachother or not doesn't matter it is still awesome. In my mind just watching and hearing an F1 car makes my little heart go pitter patter. Maybe those that claim that F1 is boring are in need of entertainment while the rest of us are happy to just stand in awe of all the different elements that are F1.

An argument over which series is better is pointless. After all I'm a Yank and I HATE NASCAR, I hate the whole mentality behind it - I would sooner watch sewing machine races. But I am certainly not going to try to convince Dave Ellis or anyone else for that matter of my opinions. Maybe he has an appreciation that I don't get. Which leads right back to my point...Guys these are the most outrageous racing machines on the planet. Enough with the boring/cheating/team orders/blah, blah, blah. Just sit back and enjoy the most awesome cars on the planet. F*%k - even practice gives me a chubby.

FraPP!!!!

Monaco provided passing and iirc, the only race this year with proper passing was Imola. Hell even Barcelona had some.

REAL racing. A1GP has a bunch of rookies, some of them, unable to control the car in the slightest, pulling off stupid moves and causing bad accidents and rolling cars. That is not racing. Its an entertainment show. Not far off the fabricated soap opera which American Wrestling produces.

I watch motorsports for top class professional racing drivers battling each other. And this from me a GP2 Fanboy [seriously ask Dave, kizz or Nick et all and they know i love GP2 :P].
The cars are the same! Therefore the emphasis is more on driver skill and setup. however some weekend the setup isnt there for some teams and therefore the driver is making up the difference while for others the setup is there but the drivers are crap! Therefore it balances out with TONS of on track battles!

Comon tell me now what single spec series doesnt have loads of overtaking? F3, Formula Ford/BMW/Palmer. The cars are made in such a way for there to be action!

And IMO F1 is far from boring this year, the midfield is HUGE! Honda, BMW, Toyota, Williams, RBR meaning there is always a huge battle for the final points paying positions and if a Big gun doesnt get it right a la Mclaren @ Spain then there more people together.
Yes Alonso is dominating but that is hardly his fault. 2006 has by far and away IMO been the bests season since 2003.

And despite being initially excited about the series i am dont see A1GP as exciting as i previously thought.
Some race were awesome just like Sepang Sprint with the France vs. Swiss battle on the last lap for the lead however so people seriously shouldnt be driving the cars at all. And why do nations such as Finalnd and Spain not have entries while countries with no racing heritage like Lebanon do?

Re: After watching the Nurburgring GP2 race...

There was no gap in the market.

Motorsports has a ladder of series. Generally the top series Outside America is very much Formula 1. That is what most drivers aim for (not all, obviously). The very obvious route to F1 is something like - Karts - Formula Ford - Formula 3 - GP2 - F1.

A1GP doesnt fit into the series ladder at all and provides no logical step to progress to anything higher. With the exceptionally poor driving standards displayed last season, it isnt exactly a welcoming prospect either. F1 teams will not look there for talent

And every new series has trouble with the start. Financial or technical. And AFAIK every team has two cars in a weekend.

Not at all. They started off with 2 cars, but the massive ammount of accidetns and lack of cash forced A1GP to remove the spare cars from the teams and only allocate them when required. They ran out of chassis. Teams also ran out of spare parts on several occasions, forced to run other teams parts, and even buy them from teams and repaint them before the next race.

And tbh, no, news series dont normally have many problems. ALMS, Grand Am and LMS (LMES) all started off fine. GP2 didnt exactly struggle either.

The owners were in talks to sell the series late last year and still were until recently. They now have a finanical backer, which is, from what i hear, extremely unstable at best. But you have to take what you can get right? Beggers cant be choosers.

btw, A1GP isnt nation on nation anyway. The French Team are all english mechanics. Graham Rahal, Bobbys Son, whos an American drove for Lebanon or something because of grand parents or something down the line like that. The only thing national about it is the colours and some of the drivers. Its also certainly not the "World Cup Of Motorsports" like it has been advertised as.

They are all talented drivers.

Ouch, fatal mistake. They most certainly are not all talented drivers. Team Chinas guy shouldnt even be allowed on a race track. Lebanon before Graham Rahal was enough to make you embaressed from watching, Team Japan managed to roll a car...under Safety Car..and Jos and his hissy fits whilst causing lots of small accidents isnt exactly wonderfull either.

A nation cup in the winter. A gap in the market. It is a serie of close racing, with different winners and a lot of action.
And every new series has trouble with the start. Financial or technical. And AFAIK every team has two cars in a weekend.

And I still like F1, but it gets boring. The professional action you're talking about is mainly in the fueltank.

And A1GP drivers are certainly not all amateurs. The page hung and now i cant put in my edit.

I was going to put in

We have had a fantastic year of F1 and quite a few great battles. If you honestly think that f1 in the past used to be passing at every corner than your looking back with rose tinted glasses, or you simply dont know anything about F1 in those days. Yes we have had bad years. 2002 and 2004 had very little action. But 2003, 2005 and so far 2060 have produced mostly great races. Yes there have been poor races inbetween, but go find me a series that doesnt have at least some poor races mixed in with excellent ones?

At the end of the day, if you want to see professional close racing, f1 is giving you that. And whether you care to admit it or not, F1 has provided action. However if you want to see cars flying all over the place and passing moves all over the shop with pre-fabricated action, then A1GP or even BTCC is right up your street.

Then fixing it to get as much action as possible, even if thats in the form of accidents.

Nobody of value cared about the series and thwy were in finanical trouble as no sponsored were onboard and the owners tried to offload the series and the millions of dollars worth of debt to other people.

they also have no spare chassis and very little spare parts and no money to produce anymore.

I dont see what NASCAR has to do wtih this as it cant be compared to open wheel, or even road racing in any way

However if your bored with the professional action you get in f1, then some amaters poncing around the track in under powered tarrted up F3 cars, being unable to keep the car on the track for 5 laps may fit your liking.
