GT5, the latest incarnation of the Sony PlayStation’s legendary driving franchise Gran Turismo will give gamers a chance to test drive a dream car created by one of the world’s most talented designers – Adrian Newey.

GT5 puts gamers behind the wheel of a fleet of supercars and takes them on global tour of famous circuits, from the Green Hell of the Nordschleife to the BBC’s Top Gear test track. Now gamers will also get to try out a ground breaking new concept car straight from the mind of Red Bull Racing’s chief designer.

In a 30-year career, Newey has built championship and race-winning cars in F1 and Indycar. His designs for Williams and McLaren helped those teams dominate the 1990s, his STR3 for Scuderia Toro Rosso became the first car from the Red Bull stable to win a grand prix and his RB5 and RB6 have since elevated Red Bull Racing to the sport’s top table.

Game designer Kazunori Yamauchi, CEO of Polyphony Digital, is similarly all-conquering in his field, and has been in charge of developing the Gran Turismo format for the Sony PlayStation from the start.

The two came together at Newey’s offices at our Milton Keynes Factory in the UK where Yamauchi threw out the rulebook to give the car designer a blank canvas on which to create a virtual machine that would push the very boundaries of motorsports. That car is the X1 Prototype.

“Every race conforms to some sort of regulation, and every racing car is built to fit within those various regulations,” explained Yamauchi. “However the X1 is something new, created from a ‘what-if’ dream. We want to inspire racing fans and the industry alike by exploring the realm of possibilities for the future of motorsports.”

Newey brought his vast experience and boyish technical curiosity to the entire X1 design process. As a result, Polyphony’s X1 Prototype became an extreme car, having a unique form and mechanism unlike any other racing car in history.

“We all have a dream about pushing the boundaries, where the performance of the car and the experience of the driver take precedence over the rules,” said Newey. “Only with the technology of PlayStation3 and the virtual environment of Gran Turismo 5 could that dream become a reality that millions can explore.

“This is the inspiration that brought Red Bull Racing and Polyphony together. And as a result the X1 Prototype is dynamite to drive.”

So just what does Adrian Newey mean by dynamite? Step forward virtual test driver Sebastian Vettel who took the X1 Prototype for a shakedown around Suzuka in Japan. On his first virtual lap, the German beat the lap record – set by Kimi Raikkonen in 2005 – by more than 20 seconds.

Haven't seen the video yet but I'll venture a guess it's an F1 car with wheel covers à la Le Mans prototype and some fancy frontwing and all the fun he can have with the rear of the car ;).

You don't seem too far off. It's not clear from the video, but I'd also suspect some hefty ground effects and turbocharging.

Well, one out of two ain't bad ;)

Interesting that he kept it two-wheel-drive, though. I wonder if that was for balance reasons.

Wow, I think that will do a what, 50sec lap on the Top Gear test track? The way I know Jeremy Clarkson it'll do a lap around their track sooner rather than later.

That thing must generate a ton of wheelspin with that much power and so little weight! Being a new Newey design, I can't see it working for more than 1 lap if it ever sees the light of day :P.

Oh yeah, and very nice that I was right, bar the complex front wing bit!

Let's face it, traction would almost be a non-issue in the dry, so I'd imagine 4WD would add too much weight to make it worthwhile.

Not sure you can easily fling a PS3 around the Top Gear track that fast...

It does look terribly ugly, but I'd really like to try it.

I want GT5! Might have to invest in a PS3.

Having thought about it some more, it could simply be that modern traction control systems make it 2wd a no-brainer over the weight penalty.

"on land"

Except it doesn't exist ;). One thing that bugs me is I find it impossible that the tires would be able to turn in that confined space, the covers should be bigger than they are.

It's quite unlikely, given that it's not real and things.

I'd expect it would be approaching the limits of what the human body can take anyway. That would have g-forces around that of a jet fighter.
