Hehe, so they had the LMS Audi R8 sportscar, out of that, they created the audi R8 road car, out of which they created a race car again ;) (And that rearwing comes straight of the R8 sportscar it seems).

Noooooo. I hate it when people say that. The only thing the R8 race car and R8 road car share is the name. I hate that they are named the same because so many people get confused as to what it actually is.

Anyway, it is ashame this is a GT3 car. They said it'd be a GT2 car, so we won't see this at Le Mans any time soon, and we won't see a factory effort either. Hopfully it can join the Porsche Ferrari GT2 battle.

I might have been wrong ofcourse, but I can't imagine the sports- and roadcar only share names. Why else would the call them the same? There must be something they have in common. McLaren also used technology from their f1-race cars when they made their f1-roadcar. Why else would they have named it f1? ;-)

They do only share the names. Audi does the usual "We use our racing technology on our road cars" lines with it, but Renault uses that to explain the "diffuser" (term used loosely) on the new Clios.

Audi announced in 2005 that the name of the successful Audi R8 race car would be used for a new road car in 2007, the Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car, appearing at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show and 2003 International Motor Show.

There is some confusion with the name, which the car shares with the Le Mans winning R8 LMP. Originally, many thought the car would be called the R9 (as there is a gap in numbering left when Audi announced the R8's successor, the diesel-powered R10).

I thought it was soley called the R8 as tribute to the le mans racer?

Agreed about it being a shame its not GT2 :(

The new M3 GTR is GT2 spec isnt it? Would be cool if they went head-to-head

Pretty much, yup.

This one? Yeah, thats GT2. And makes it the first legal BMW M3 for ALMS/LMS/Le Mans competition, since the previous M3 GTR was completely illegal, it just took awhile for anyone to notice.

I thought the old one was legal just Porsche kept complaining about something so they left? What was the actual problem with it?

They said lemans will only be an option when they complete their goals in the ALMS so dont expect an 09 entry.

Well Porsche rightly complained about it.

The Original M3 GTR had a Straight Six in it, and got trounced by the 996s. BMW Introduced a V8 version, which was much more successful. But no road going V8 M3 existed, technically making the car a Prototype, not a GT car. After that BMW produced a handful of them to sell, but by then it was too late. ALMS changed the rules and made it much more strict, and BMW pulled out of ALMS and entered VLN and some FIA GT events as "G2" entries.

None of the GT3 Lotus' (Loti?) have been powerful enough to make a proper effort in GT3. They are great under acceleration because of the lightweight, but the lack of ultimate power means by the end of the straight, all of the advantage is lost.

Careful now. If you tell them to drop a V8 in there, they'll need to make some road going versions :P
