ALAIN PROST WINS ACTION-PACKED EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX

Alain Prost has won the European GP at the Nurburgring Circuit, Germany, with Jackie Stewart in second and Ayrton Senna third.

Michael Schumacher was one of several retirements in a hectic start to the race, but his championship lead did not suffer too much with Juan Manuel Fangio finishing 8th and Sebastian Vettel also retiring early on.

Fernando Alonso finished a superb 4th place after qualifying on the back row of the grid, while Jack Brabham was one of several relegation-battling drivers to score points and improve their chances of survival.

Brabham finished fifth, with team mate Niki Lauda 9th. Nino Farina also helped his survival hopes by scoring 6 points for 7th place.

The race started in chaotic style, despite everyone getting through the first chicane safely, as two separate incidents at the NGK-Schikane on the opening lap saw retirements for Damon Hill and Denny Hulme. Bizarrely, both retirements came as a result of them being hit by their own team mates, but that didn't matter to Hill who suffered his fourth crash of the season following accidents in Germany, South America and at the last round in Great Britain.

The action-packed opening lap saw Schumacher lead from pole, with Lewis Hamilton making up the ground he lost from his penalty for impeding in qualifying, the Brit moving up to 2nd place ahead of Nino Farina, who had a fantastic opening lap to move himself up to third.

There was barely time to breathe from the opening lap before Alberto Ascari lost control of his Ferrari on the approach to the Michael Schumacher-S chicane on lap 2. The Italian hit Farina going into the turn, ran off the track, and then crashed into Jim Clark when rejoining, forcing Clark to suffer his first retirement of the season. Ascari, as well as his own retirement, was handed a five-place grid penalty for the next race at Monza for causing both collisions.

But the action didn't stop there as Ferrari's race went from bad to over when Michael Schumacher's suspension failed at the end of the second lap. The German was forced to retire from the lead of the race, sacrificing his opportunity of winning a fifth Legends Trophy Grand Prix in a row, and retiring from a winning position in his home race for the second time this season.

Schumacher's loose wheel then ran across the track, and was collected by Sebastian Vettel, resulting in a huge crash for the Red Bull, colliding with the Mercedes of Juan Manuel Fangio. It's the second time Vettel has crashed into Schumacher's debris, after he also collided with a loose wheel following Schumacher's retirement in the tunnel in Monaco. Fangio was forced to pit for a new front wing, dropping him way down the field.

All the action at the start of the race promoted Lewis Hamilton to the lead, with Jackie Stewart just behind in second place, ahead of Prost, Graham Hill, and Mika Hakkinen, who had negotiated his way through the mess to rise to fifth.

But, and not for the first time this season, Hamilton's lead did not last long as his McLaren once again let him down when he was forced to retire with a gearbox problem on lap 8. This promoted Stewart to the lead, the first time the BRM had led a race, with Prost and Senna - who had overtaken Farina, Hakkinen and Hill - second and third.

At the front, the rest of the race was all about the strategy. Both Jackie Stewart and Ayrton Senna opted for a one-stop strategy, with the pit stops allowing Alain Prost to take the lead. Prost, on a no-stop strategy, then set about defending his lead for the remainder of the race from the faster BRM and McLaren cars.

Just like Schumacher did to Prost in the last race, Prost was able to successfully defend his lead and make his strategy work, despite a spin on lap 18 that cost him 14 seconds. The Frenchman becomes the first driver other than Schumacher to win more than one race this season.

Further back, Alonso had a strong race, and was able to overtake several cars after his pit stop to move himself up to fourth place - his best result of the season so far.

The other point of interest for the remaining laps was which of the drivers at the bottom of the Driver's Championship would be able to take the most advantage from all the retirements and score decent points for them and their team. Nino Farina's excellent start was neutralised by his incident with Ascari, but he still held on for a seventh place that moves him three points clear of the bottom five. Mika Hakkinen, however, was not able to convert his fast start into points, the Finn crashing out of the race with eight laps to go.

Michael Schumacher takes a 39 point lead into the next round at Monza, no doubt relieved that Fangio wasn't able to capitalise on his retirement, whilst Prost's victory moves him up to third in the table, one point ahead of Vettel, and mathematically still in with a sniff of the championship, being 60 points behind Schumacher with 125 points still on offer this season.

In the Constructor's Championship, Ferrari's double retirement ended up only costing their lead over McLaren 15 points, they now have a 65 point cushion with five races to go. BRM, meanwhile, have moved themselves clear of the relegation battle - which is now a three-way fight between Cooper, Brabham and Benetton - thanks to Jackie Stewart's well-driven second place.

Schumacher and Hamilton both had quick starts off the line.

After overtaking Prost on the opening lap, Nino Farina found himself in the unfamiliar place of third position.

Carnage at the back as Damon Hill is shunted off the track by his own team mate.

Several cars had to take avoiding action as Ascari's car and debris littered the track following his crash.

Michael Schumacher suffers his first mechanical failure of the season...

...which resulted in a huge crash when Vettel hit the Ferrari's ailing tyre...

...an incident which also compromised Fangio's race when he was unable to avoid the spinning Red Bull.

Lewis Hamilton's hopes of victory lasted only a few laps after he took the lead, thanks to a gearbox issue.

All the chaos in the opening laps resulted in Jackie Stewart leading his first ever Legend's Trophy Grand Prix laps.

The drivers on a one-stop strategy decided to make their pit stops early in the race.

Fangio's eventful race continued when he went off the track at turn 1 trying to avoid Mike Hawthorn, who had just emerged from the pits.

Prost re-ignited his form in the opening rounds of the season when he spun off the track, but it did not cost him the lead.

Senna had a strong race, overtaking several cars on his way to third.

Hakkinen missed an opportunity to score points when he crashed, and is now 21st in the driver standings.

Alonso drove one of the best races in the field to rise from 21st on the grid to a fourth place finish.

Hawthorn and Lauda provide some late-race entertainment as they battled for 7th.

Alain Prost says he's still in contention for the Driver's Championship after his win, but is 60 points behind with only five races to go.
good for Alonso! Had it been a better quali, who knows what would've happened. I really hope despite the better form of his teammate that Ferrari are still interested..

SCHUMACHER TAKES TENTH POLE OF THE SEASON AT MONZA

Michael Schumacher delighted the Tifosi with another dominant qualifying performance to secure his tenth pole position of the inaugural Legend's Trophy season.

Lewis Hamilton will line up alongside Schumacher, the first time the Brit will start on the front row of the grid - he qualified second last time out at the Nurburgring but was demoted to fourth after a penalty for impeding.

The second Ferrari of Alberto Ascari put in a solid lap to qualify third fastest, but has to take a five-place grid penalty for causing a collision in the last race, and is therefore demoted to eighth.

Ascari's penalty promotes Juan Manuel Fangio and Sebastian Vettel up to third and fourth respectively, with Alain Prost once again impressing in his underpowered Renault, the Frenchman starting in fifth place.

Williams are expected to have a strong race at the Monza circuit which rewards cars with good horsepower, and Damon Hill put himself in a good position to do just that, equalling his best qualifying performance of the season to start sixth. Team mate Piquet lines up tenth.

Further back, there was little to cheer for the drivers and teams involved in relegation battles. Kimi Raikkonen was the quickest of the drivers fighting for their Division 1 survival, the Finn - who hasn't scored any points since the Monaco Grand Prix - starts 12th, just ahead of Alonso and Lauda.

There were a couple of other penalties that were applied to the grid order. Emerson Fittipaldi took his ten-place penalty for accruing five penalties over the course of the season, which sees the Brazilian start at the back of the grid. Meanwhile Denny Hulme was demoted three places for impeding one of Schumacher's flying laps, and starts 19th for the struggling Cooper team.

But Hulme's interference didn't matter to the prancing horse, and Schumacher, in the most powerful car on the grid, has a golden opportunity to increase his 39-point lead at the top of the Driver's Championship, and put one hand on the trophy with only four races to go after this one.

However, after the German's Ferrari suffered it's first mechanical retirement of the season in the last race, and with Hamilton's quick McLaren alongside him and Fangio directly behind him on the grid, there is still work to do to bring home the victory for the expectant Italian fans.

Just like he's done so many times already this season, Schumacher's first flying lap was good enough to take pole and remained unchallenged for the rest of the session.

Up on horsepower, the McLarens are expected to have a good race, Hamilton putting himself in contention for the win with a front row start.

Hulme gets penalised for impeding Schumacher, but it made no impact on the order at the front.

Alberto Ascari drives through the chicane named after him. The Italian starts eighth after his penalty but has a quick car underneath him.

Williams could be a team to watch out for in the race. They start sixth and tenth.

Prost continues to out-perform his car and starts fifth. Final times on the left.
2nd for Hamilton! Go get them in the race.
FERRARI BRING HOME ONE-TWO AT THE ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Michael Schumacher converted his pole position into a victory at the historic Monza circuit, with Alberto Ascari driving a fine race to secure Ferrari's second 1-2 of the season.

Sebastian Vettel overtook Juan Manuel Fangio on the last lap to score his first podium since his victory in Canada, and further consolidate Schumacher's lead at the top of the Driver's Championship.

Ayrton Senna finished fifth, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, who's sixth place should finally see the Finn safe from the threat of relegation.

It was another frustrating weekend for Lewis Hamilton, however, when a crash at the Parabolica on lap 14 saw the Brit retire for the sixth time this season.

Just like he did at the Nurburgring last time out, Hamilton got a quick start, and was able to out-brake Schumacher into the first turn, taking the lead of the Grand Prix. However, Schumacher demonstrated the power of his Ferrari engine by pulling a move into the second chicane immediately afterwards to re-take the lead, where he would stay until the pit stops.

Further back, there were poor starts for Fangio and Prost, who lost their 3rd and 5th positions off the grid and fell back to the lower end of the top 10. Ascari, after his five-place grid penalty, moved up from his 8th place starting position to sit 5th at the end of the first lap.

On lap 4, Sebastian Vettel surprised everyone by passing the more powerful McLaren of Hamilton into the second chicane, and moved into second place. Schumacher, meanwhile, was continuing to build his lead by around a second per lap, with Hamilton, now in third, being hassled by Damon Hill, Ascari, and Senna behind him.

At the half-way stage, those who chose to run a one-stop strategy came into the pits, including Schumacher, Vettel, Senna, and Damon Hill. This gave Ascari the lead after the Ferrari, who wasn't stopping, had passed Hamilton on the same lap. Hamilton, also on a no-stop strategy, would probably have still felt confident of a good result, but all that disappeared when he ran wide at the Parabolica on the next lap, crashing into the wall and ending his race.

No driver has retired more times than Hamilton this season, and it's the third time the triple World-champion has retired from a top 2 position in the race.

Several other drivers chose not to stop - clearly noting that the last three races had been won by a driver on this strategy - including Kimi Raikkonen, who found himself up in fifth place after the pit stops. The Cooper managed to hold on for a much needed eight points for sixth, which should see Raikkonen safe after being dragged into the relegation battle due to not scoring any points since the Monaco Grand Prix.

Despite his stop, however, Schumacher was able to reel in Ascari, passing the Italian with four laps to go to take his sixth victory of the season and extend his lead at the top of the table to 52 points.

Further back, there were more incidents and talking points. Nelson Piquet and Niki Lauda had a coming together whilst fighting for the first chicane, which resulted in both their retirements. Williams' miserable day concluded when Damon Hill - on for his best result since his 2nd place in Monaco - retired with an engine failure a few laps later.

Fernando Alonso was also involved in a first corner tangle, with Jim Clark, which resulted in the Spaniard's first retirement of the season, and a five-place grid penalty for the next race in Singapore for his role in the crash.

Meanwhile, Emerson Fittipaldi got himself into trouble with the stewards once again when he drove into Graham Hill whilst trying to overtake the Lotus at the Ascari-S. Fittipaldi - who had started at the back of the grid after taking a penalty for accruing five penalties during the season - had driven well to work his way up the field and challenge for points, but threw it all away with a rash move that handed the Brazilian a 20-second penalty after the race.

Both Michael Schumacher and Ferrari now have the opportunity to win their respective championships at the next race in Singapore - with three races still to go after it. Schumacher will win the Driver's Championship if he wins and Fangio fails to finish in the top 8, whilst Ferrari will get their hands on the constructor's trophy if they can out-score closest challengers McLaren by 28 points or more.

All 22 cars make a run for - and get round - the first chicane, with Hamilton emerging as the leader.

Alonso makes an uncharacteristic mistake, taking out himself and Jim Clark in the process.

Vettel drags his less powerful Red Bull into second place courtesy of this move on Lewis Hamilton.

Piquet, Lauda and Fangio engage in a three-way fight for the first turn, but only Fangio makes it out unscathed.

Ascari drove a good race, including this pass on Ayrton Senna.

Hamilton's no-stop strategy meant he was slower on track than those around him, and had dropped to fourth by the time the pit stops happened.

Schumacher drove a perfect race, including this flawless pit stop.

Hamilton runs wide at the Parabolica...

...and once again retires from a promising position in the race.

The Tifosi were treated not only to a Ferrari one-two, but the spectacle of old and new on the same piece of tarmac, as Schumacher passes Ascari for the lead.

Kimi Raikkonen insisted before the race that he only needed one more good result to be safe from relegation, and he got it with sixth.

Vettel passes Fangio on the last lap, giving him only his fourth podium of the season.

Schumacher takes his sixth win of the season, and could wrap up the title in the next race.
Hamilton's chances of a title is over already, hope he turns into amazing next season.

I dunno what is happening to Alonso tbh. But at least Benetton are getting relegated so far, so the Ferrari seat is there for the taking as it stands....

TRANSFER RUMOURS

Reports are surfacing that Kimi Raikkonen has approached Red Bull with the intention of switching to the Austrian team for next season. Raikkonen - who's contract with Cooper runs out at the end of this season - has already made public his discontent with the lack of power and pace in his current car and is said to be keen to work with Christian Horner and his Formula One team mate Sebastian Vettel.

-

Niki Lauda is also trying to instigate a transfer, and is apparently speaking to Mercedes about the possibility of joining them for next season - if the Austrian survives relegation. Lauda's capacity as a non-executive chairman of the Mercedes team in Formula One is seen as enough of an affiliation to allow the move to go ahead, and with the German outfit actively seeking a replacement for the struggling Mika Hakkinen, the move could happen should Lauda avoid being relegated to Division 2 next season - he is one point away from safety with four races remaining.

Lauda is currently on a two-year contract with Brabham, but owner Jack Brabham has reportedly spoken to Lauda and told him that he won't hold him back if he wants to seek a move to a higher-ranked team.

-

Ferrari were quick to reassure Fernando Alonso that the potential swap with Alberto Ascari will still go ahead if Benetton are relegated from the top division. Ascari drove an impressive race at Monza to finish 2nd, just five seconds behind team mate Michael Schumacher, but it seems that the "inconsistent" Italian has already burnt his bridges with the Ferrari team and they are ready to switch him with Alonso for next season.

With Benetton struggling at the foot of the table, the swap is looking increasingly likely.

-

Finally, Williams appear to be trying to force Nelson Piquet out of the team, after a disappointing season which sees the Brazilian down in 14th in the Driver's Championship having failed to finish in the top 5 all season. Piquet is on a two-year contract and does not want to leave, but Williams are said to be interested in replacing him with Nigel Mansell - who sits top of Division 2 and looks likely to be promoted - for next season, before they look ahead to the possibility of pairing Damon Hill with either Ayrton Senna or Alain Prost for season three.

SCHUMACHER RECOVERS FROM CRASH TO TAKE POLE IN SINGAPORE

Ferrari's Michael Schumacher survived a crash and traffic to take his eleventh pole position of the inaugural Legend's Trophy season.

The seven-times Formula One world champion hit the wall on his third of four qualifying runs, but by that time had already driven a lap quick enough to ensure he starts the race at the front of the grid.

Lewis Hamilton is helping McLaren to celebrate 50 years of Formula One by driving the historic 1967 M4B, and did the car justice by setting the second quickest time for the third race in a row.

Alberto Ascari carried his form from Italy over to put the second Ferrari on the second row of the grid, with Alain Prost, who is still mathematically in the Driver's Championship battle, starting fourth.

Lotus have had a poor run of form recently, scoring just 16 points in the last 6 races, but enjoyed a solid qualifying session to start fifth and seventh on the grid, sandwiching Juan Manuel Fangio in the Mercedes.

Fangio will need to have a strong race - and rely on Schumacher struggling - to stop the German from winning the Driver's Championship, a feat that could be achieved this weekend if Schumacher wins and Fangio fails to finish in the top 8.

Ferrari also have the opportunity to confirm title glory, with McLaren their only realistic threat. However, with Ayrton Senna starting down in 12th place, the British outfit will struggle to prevent the Scuderia team from taking the Constructor's Championship, either this race or next.

In the relegation battles - which are increasing in intensity with only four races to go - Nino Farina was the highest qualifier of the seven drivers most in danger of falling to Division 2 next season, and has a good opportunity to put some distance between himself and the bottom five, he starts from 11th.

Farina is being touted as a possible Red Bull driver next season, with the Austrian team's decision to tell the interested Kimi Raikkonen that they won't think about driver swaps until after the end of the season being seen as their interest in signing Farina - providing he survives relegation but Benetton don't.

There was good news for Niki Lauda before the start of the session, the Brabham driver being told by Mercedes that they will offer him Mika Hakkinen's seat next season, if he doesn't get relegated. The session itself didn't go quite as smoothly, however, when Lauda also crashed - at the same corner as Schumacher - early on. He was able to return to the pits and use the spare car to qualify 17th, but starts 16th after Hakkinen was demoted three places for impeding.

ASCARI WINS SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX AFTER RACE RED-FLAGGED FOLLOWING PIT STOP CATASTROPHE

Alberto Ascari has won a controversial Singapore Grand Prix, which had to be red-flagged on lap 22.

After an incident-packed first two-thirds of the race, the first of the drivers on a one-stop strategy came into the pits on lap 21, but most of them were unable to be serviced. A bug in the program - attributed to the modified nature of the Singapore Circuit - meant that several drivers slightly missed their pit boxes, and neither the driver nor the pit crew were able to adjust, leaving them unable to move.

Prost, Senna, Hulme and Vettel were included in the list of drivers who experienced the pit stop bug, and when Alberto Ascari pitted from the lead on the following lap and suffered the same issue, the red flag was thrown.

After much deliberation, the race stewards decided not to resume the race, stating it was "unfair to do so when a fundamental part of the process of a Grand Prix is not working".

Half points have been awarded to the drivers based on a count-back to the end of the lap before the first of the drivers came in for their stops. Ascari - who claims his first win since the German Grand Prix - earns 12.5 points for his win, which he inherited when Michael Schumacher's engine caught fire just a few laps before the red flag.

Lewis Hamilton, who was on a no-stop strategy, finished second and earns 9 points, with Alain Prost third for 7.5 points.

The race itself was proving to be an interesting one, before the pit stop debacle, and despite overtaking proving difficult on the street circuit, there were plenty of talking points.

Alberto Ascari got a good start off the line, and was able to beat Lewis Hamilton into second place for the first corner - a move that would prove crucial to the race result. Further back, there were few changes in position in grid order until a crash on lap three involving several cars - including Hakkinen, Scheckter and Damon Hill - mixed up the lower end of the field. Jody Scheckter's pit stop was the first to be effected by the bug, but - as was the case with Michael Schumacher at the South American Grand Prix - it was believed to be a one-off incident at the time.

The race then became mainly about strategy. The Ferrari's, on a one-stop strategy, were doing their best to pull away from Hamilton's McLaren, who was trying to do the whole race without stopping and leapfrog the Ferraris when they came in for fuel and tyres. Meanwhile, behind Hamilton, Alain Prost, Graham Hill, Juan Manuel Fangio, and later on Sebastian Vettel were forming a queue in the battle for third place. They all had quicker cars being on softer tyres, and lighter on fuel, but could not get past Hamilton, who was struggling to keep his 1967 McLaren M4B in a straight line with his hard tyres on the challenging Singapore circuit.

Several more cars fell foul of the Singapore walls, including Jackie Stewart and Nino Farina, who had to retire, and Nelson Piquet, who needed a new front wing.

Out front, the Ferraris continued to pull away until on lap 15, Schumacher's chance to win the Driver's Championship this weekend ended when his engine caught fire in spectacular style - handing the lead of the race to Ascari, with Hamilton and co. now battling for second place.

Half-a-dozen laps later - after Jim Clark suffered his third retirement in a row when he also hit the wall - the pit stops started, and the race was red-flagged when the bug made it's full presence felt.

The half-point result had minimal effect on the Driver's Championship. Fangio scored just 5 points for fifth place, cutting the lead to 47 points. This means that if Schumacher scores at least 3 more points than Fangio in the next race at Interlagos, he will be the champion. At the bottom, Niki Lauda's 0.5 points for tenth was the only change in the bottom seven.

The Constructor's Championship saw similarly unspectacular changes. Ferrari now lead McLaren by 99.5 points, meaning McLaren now need to outscore the Italian team by at least 14.5 points in Brazil in order to keep the championship alive. Meanwhile, there was little change at the bottom, with Benetton now 14 points from safety with three races to go, and looking more likely to be relegated. The identity of the second relegated team, however, is still anyone's guess, with Cooper and Brabham fighting for their Division 1 lives.

As for the future of the Singapore Grand Prix - which was in doubt before the race had even started - it now looks very likely that it will be replaced by one of the historic tracks shortlisted for next season, which include Buenos Aries, Zandvoort, Paul Ricard, Pau and the Osterreichring. A provisional calendar for next season is due to be released at some point this week anyway, and should answer the question of whether or not Singapore can keep its place despite the problems this race has suffered.

Schumacher lined up on pole alongside Hamilton's historic McLaren - celebrating 50 years of McLaren in Formula One.

Ascari leapfrogged Hamilton at the start, but was unable to keep up with Schumacher's pace.

Carnage at the back as several cars get tangled up with each other, and against the wall.

Jackie Stewart suffers his sixth retirement of the season - all from points scoring positions.

Alonso once again drove a solid race after a difficult qualifying session, keeping his nose clean for seventh place.

Hamilton used the narrow, twisty nature of the circuit to his advantage, keeping the faster cars behind him for the duration of the race.

Schumacher suffered his second mechanical retirement in three races when his engine let go, throwing away what looked like being an easy victory.

PROVISIONAL SEASON TWO CALENDAR PUBLISHED

The draft version of the calendar for the second season of the Legend's Trophy has been published, and features a number of changes from season one.

The number of races has increased from 17 to 20, and there are four new tracks hosting races, with Singapore giving way having hosted a controversial race in season one that had to be red flagged following a pit-stop bug.

In a new-look line up with several tracks moving to different parts of the calendar, it is Melbourne who takes over from Spa as the season opener, with the Belgian track relocating to its more familiar spot in the second half of the season. Melbourne - which has been a traditional Formula One opening race since the late 90's - did not feature last season, but has gained a place in the provisional calendar alongside Buenos Aires, Zandvoort and the Osterreichring, which will also make their Legend's Trophy debuts.

Once again the season will conclude at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, but not before popular historic tracks such as Silverstone, Hockenheim, Spa, and a new-look Monza complete with oval section, host their own races.

Should any races have to back out of hosting a Grand Prix, they will be replaced by one of the two reserves, which are currently Paul Ricard and Estoril.

The final calendar is due to be be published at the end of the current season.

NEWS ROUND-UP

Lewis Hamilton and Graham Hill have signed contract extensions that sees them stay with their respective teams until the end of season three.

Hamilton was rumoured to be considering switching to Mercedes after next season following an unreliable and frustrating season one with McLaren, but in signing a new contract has shown that he believes the Woking based team will give him his best chance of a Legend's Trophy Driver's Championship.

--

Pau could be included in the final season two calendar, if the French circuit can overcome it's technical difficulties.

A historic street circuit that hosts a Formula 3 race, Pau would be a popular addition to the calendar, but it's inclusion is currently being hampered by problems getting the modified track to run in the game.

--

Drivers are being encouraged to display their Legend's Trophy number on their cars, rather than the number that was used when that car was in operation in Formula One.

Damon Hill was the first driver to change the number on his car, sporting the number 0 on his 1996 Williams FW18 in Singapore, whilst Lewis Hamilton will be adopting the number 44 on his McLaren MP4-23 in the next race at Interlagos, with other cars soon to follow suit.

LTO chief executive Michael Hayward hopes that all 22 cars lining up on the grid for the opening race of next season will feature their Legend's Trophy numbers.
FANGIO BEATS SCHUMACHER TO WET BRAZILIAN POLE

Juan Manuel Fangio scored only his second pole position of the season, and a timely one as he tries to prevent Michael Schumacher winning the Driver's Championship at Interlagos.

The Argentine will be hoping there is not a repeat of what happened last time he started a race out front, when he would eventually finish third in the British Grand Prix, behind the victorious Schumacher.

Schumacher will win the driver's title this weekend if he outscores Fangio by three or more points, and will start the race alongside the Mercedes on the front row of the grid.

Sebastian Vettel and Alberto Ascari - who are both fighting for third in the driver's standings - start on the second row of the grid, with Ascari hoping to do his bit to earn Ferrari the Constructor's Championship by preventing McLaren from outscoring them by 14 points during the race.

Jackie Stewart enjoyed his best ever qualifying session during a wet Brazilian afternoon and starts fifth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in sixth.

With just three races to go before the end of the season, there is also a stronger focus on the bottom of the table, as seven drivers battle to avoid finishing in the bottom five places. Niki Lauda qualified in the top 10 for only the second time this year, and starts the race from a season-high eighth place. Kimi Raikkonen, meanwhile, will be looking to help Cooper's relegation battle with Brabham and Benetton from tenth on the grid.

The wet conditions were hampering visibility throughout the session, but Vettel was still able to put a quick lap in early on.

Schumacher went fastest on his first run, and everyone thought that would be that...

...but Fangio had other ideas - negotiating traffic and beating Schumacher's time by over three-tenths of a second.

Jackie Stewart was very impressive in the wet conditions, and could be a dark horse for the race win.

Schumacher was unable to respond as conditions got worse and drivers weren't able to improve their times in the second half of the session.

Damon Hill suffered another poor qualifying session, and starts 18th for the second race in a row. Final times on the left.
SCHUMACHER AND FERRARI WIN LEGEND'S TROPHY CHAMPIONSHIPS AFTER INTERLAGOS VICTORY

Michael Schumacher has become the first ever Legend's Trophy Driver's Champion, thanks to a win in Brazil that also handed Ferrari the Constructor's Championship.

From second on the grid, Schumacher drove a no-stop strategy to leapfrog Mercedes' Juan Manuel Fangio at the pit stops, driving a faultless race to take the crucial win.

Fangio - who needed to avoid being outscored by Schumacher by 3 or more points - would finish second, with Sebastian Vettel occupying the final podium position.

The result means Schumacher now has an unassailable 54 point lead, with two races to go and only 50 points available.

Ferrari also did enough to become inaugural Constructor's Champions, sealing a fantastic day for the Maranello-based team. McLaren needed to outscore Ferrari by at least 14 points to keep the championship alive, but could only finish 5th and 7th - to Ferrari's 1st and 4th - and are now 120.5 points behind.

With the championships now settled, all eyes will be on the relegation battles, and for the second race in a row, Niki Lauda was the only driver of those fighting the drop to score any points with his 10th place finish. The single point he earned was enough to haul Lauda - who will join Mercedes next season if he survives - outside the bottom five at this late stage of the season.

There were only three retirements during the race which, despite several light showers, was not as eventful as it could have been. Alain Prost suffered only his second retirement of the season when he suffered a suspension failure on lap 5, whilst Emerson Fittipaldi (crash) and Fernando Alonso (engine) also failed to finish - resulting in Renault's first ever double-DNF. Alonso was handed a three-place grid penalty for the next race in Sepang for parking his car in an unsafe place when he brought it to a stop at the pit lane entrance.

The cars lined up on a slightly damp track on slick tyres - but would all make it round the first lap unscathed.

Fangio kept his lead after the first few corners and set about pulling out a gap to make his strategy work.

Ayrton Senna, who started 9th, overtook more cars than anyone else, but would only finish the race in 7th.

Prost's stricken Renault is hauled away, his first retirement since Canada.

Mika Hakkinen had the chance for some much needed points, but didn't have the pace in his Mercedes to convert the opportunity.

Lauda's 10th puts him just half a point above relegation, but could be crucial.

Nelson Piquet put his deteriorating relationship with Williams behind him to finish a solid sixth.

Fangio only had an 8 second lead when he made his pit stop, and so needed some quick laps on his fresher tyres in the second half of the race.

The struggling Coopers fight over 16th place - they are now just 5.5 points ahead of the bottom two in the Constructor's Championship.

Emerson Fittipaldi looked like he was on for some decent points...

...but threw them away at the exit of turn five.

Lewis Hamilton - now sporting his #44 - had a quiet race for fifth.

A messy end to the race as cars collide trying to avoid Alonso's stricken Renault.

Schumacher takes his seventh Legend's Trophy race win, and both Driver's and Constructor's Championships with it.
