THE GRAND PRIX 4 LEGEND'S TROPHY

So here's something that started off as a spark of curiosity and has developed into a major project. I've searched this forum for something similar so as not to bore you with identical championships, but couldn't find anything quite like what I'm attempting to do (if there is please let me know).

I am creating a championship in GP4 that features the greatest F1 drivers and teams throughout the history of the sport. And I don't mean 'greatest' as in my opinion, I mean as in statistical fact.

The first stage was to tally up the number of World Championship points every F1 driver ever has won. However, there is a clear bias towards today's generation of racers due to the higher scoring system used in comparison to yesteryear. Therefore, I have gone through every championship race run since 1950 and awarded points to the drivers based on today's system (25,18,15,12,10,8,6,4,2,1).

Once that was done - which took quite a while - I then worked out their average points earned per race entered (DNQs and DNSs are excluded). This was done so as not to penalise brilliant drivers with (often tragically) short careers and also to cancel out the unfair advantage gained by drivers with a lengthy but ultimately unsuccessful career. The final step was to add a bonus of two points per World Championship won. However, this does not necessarily mean the driver that won the actual Driver's World Championship, but the driver that would have won it had today's scoring system been used during that year.

Interestingly, this came up with the following alternative world champions:

1964 Graham HILL instead of John SURTEES
1965 Graham HILL instead of Jim CLARK
1976 Niki LAUDA instead of James HUNT
1983 Alain PROST instead of Nelson PIQUET
1984 Alain PROST instead of Niki LAUDA
1988 Alain PROST instead of Ayrton SENNA
1994 Damon HILL instead of Michael SCHUMACHER
1997 Michael SCHUMACHER* instead of Jacques VILLENEUVE
1999 Eddie IRVINE instead of Mika HAKKINEN

*Championship disqualification is ignored.

In total, 447 drivers would have scored World Championship points using today's system, however, as I have implemented a rule that requires a driver to have entered at least 25 races to be eligible for the League of Legends (sorry Max), the number of qualifying drivers stands at 218.

For reference, here are the top 100 drivers after all the above calculations have been made. The number in brackets denotes the driver's rank using purely the total number of points awarded over their career:

Obviously, it is impossible to 100% accurately rank the "best drivers ever", and any method will provide controversy. For example, many will argue that Gilles Villeneuve deserves to be higher than his rank of 53rd, but this is the method I believe is as close as possible to being accurate.

The constructors' rankings were calculated slightly differently - mainly because by the time I realised I wanted to use this spreadsheet for an actual championship, I had already been through most of the races for the drivers and didn't want to spend many hours doing it all again for the constructors. This method is similar but simpler - teams are scored on their overall championship standing using the 25,18,15 etc. system for each year, then the score is divided by the number of years they entered, with two points added for every Constructors Championship won.

Here are the 49 constructors that scored points using the above system:

1 FERRARI 49.345
2 WILLIAMS 32.447
3 MCLAREN 31.020

Constructors that have entered less than 50 races score 0 points, with the 61 constructors failing to score being ranked by number of races entered. The only exception to this rule is Brawn GP, who score 2 points for their World Championship win in 2009, and are thus ranked 38th.

Now that I have established the 22 drivers and 11 teams that will participate in the top division (other lower divisions will also run, as explained later), the next task was to assign drivers to teams.

Each driver was assigned to a constructor using the following steps:

-A constructor that the driver raced for in his career
-A constructor of the same nationality as the driver
-Perceived personal preference (e.g. potential team mates or affiliation with another team)
-Random selection

Drivers were assigned in descending rank order (e.g. Michael Schumacher was first), however there was scope for adjustments should it result in more drivers being able to fulfill the top two criteria. Should a driver have raced for more than one of the available constructors, a bias was made towards the team the driver is believed to have a closer connection to.

The end result is as follows:

FERRARI: Michael SCHUMACHER, Alberto ASCARI
MERCEDES Juan Manuel FANGIO, Mika HAKKINEN
COOPER: Kimi RAIKKONEN, Denny HULME
RED BULL: Sebastian VETTEL, Emerson FITTIPALDI
MCLAREN: Lewis HAMILTON, Ayrton SENNA
WILLIAMS: Damon HILL, Nelson PIQUET
BENETTON:Nino FARINA, Jody SCHECKTER
RENAULT: Alain PROST, Fernando ALONSO
LOTUS: Graham HILL, Jim CLARK
BRM: Jackie STEWART, Mike HAWTHORN
BRABHAM: Niki LAUDA, Jack BRABHAM

Each driver and team will have their performance file adjusted to reflect these rankings and scores. Thus, Michael Schumacher and Ferrari will be the favourites to win the first season. However, I will make the field spread narrower than is seen in a typical F1 grid, which should make for closer, less predictable racing.

I am currently in the process of downloading cars that I can use for as many of these drivers as possible, with cars that the driver raced in during their career being used wherever I can. However, there are two constructors - Cooper and BRM - that as far as I can tell have no downloadable mods available, and thus I will design an appropriate livery using a more modern F1 template.

Next up: the calendar. This is where, for the first time, personal opinion comes into play (to a degree). It is, in my opinion, the best 17 tracks available taking into account a variety of history, track design and overall spectacle. To see the finalised Season 1 calendar, click the relevant link in the "Handy Links" section at the top of this post.

All the races will be run in spectator/director mode. Races in Division 1 will be 50% race distance with a 30 minute qualifying session to determine the grid order. Division 2 will have rounds of 25% distance races, with the grid being pre-determined by the game itself. Lower divisions will feature 8 races and have results simulated using random numbers influenced by their score as above.

That should be enough to digest for now, further details on the scoring system, lower divisions and promotion/relegation conditions will be revealed as my preparations for the championship continue. Feel free to ask questions/make suggestions about all of this.

When I read the title, I was expecting something completely different...

But what a surprise! Great work indeed.
Great idea.
This is a full sample of best driverst and teams ever.
Maybe you can try to find some space for Tyrrel? ;-) (Stewart was my favourite driver when I was a kid)
One think more: Shekter was a South African Rep. driver, not Austrian.
Go ahead!
Cool idea, and it looks like you've put a lot of work into things.
If you're interested in such things, the F1Metrics blog features a whole load of analyses of all things F1, including a 'Greatest F1 Driver of all time' list.
While it doesn't claim to be wholly accurate - the author himself goes to great lengths to stress this - it is very interesting to read, and takes into account things such as car performance.

I also think it's a cool idea, although I have my reservations to any method which tries to determine the best drivers purely on statistical grounds (e. g. yours do not account for the relative strength of the car, see Alonso languishing in about 15th place on average in 2015). I always try to hone in on the subject using as much micro data as possible (actually re-watching races, noting race paces, relatives to teammates over the years which make for a lot of cross-checks, quali pace, driver errors, etc.) and there's always a subjective element to it and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Track selection is also a bit subjective topic, although you already admitted as much - here, I MIGHT have a bit more insight than usual due to how much time and attention I pay to track layouts during track making and how are they challenging and how they are not. But I'm also perfectly fine with other selections, even if I present my arguments beforehand.

(Needless to say, I can imagine different driver sets and calendars to what you intend to use, but this is not the point here.)

Have fun with the project, I will keep an eye on it. :-)

How can Schumacers average be 26.633 when you can only score a maximum of 25 points per race?

Because Alonso won two championships, and has spent time at the beginning of his career (and this year) driving for backmarkers. Whereas Vettel has won four titles, and Hamilton three, without really having to work up from the tail end of the field.

Tyrrell will participate in Division 2 for the opening season. Thank you for the correction.

Very interesting, thanks for the reference.

Because he's had 14 points added to his score for the 7 World Championships he has won. His actual average points per race is 12.633.
To be fair, the 2 points for World Championships aren't exactly biased, either, because they yet again penalize drivers whose careers were cut short, like Senna, for example. It's likely that he would have earned more Championships without his early death. So yeah, there'll always be controversy and people shouting that one driver should be in, instead of another. Overall you really put in some thought and it's about fun, after all. Potentially, you could think about alternating drivers after seasons.

The only thing I'd personally add is that I'd have Hamilton with Mercedes and Hakkinen with McLaren, since both had their bigger F1 success with the respectively other team.

Yes, Senna probably would have gone on to achieve more success, but that is an assumption. If Alonso had been killed in 2007 then everyone would have said he would have won more championships, yet he hasn't. I agree that Senna probably deserves to be ranked higher than 8th and would be had he had a longer career, but this competition is based on fact, not speculation.

My decision to put Hamilton with McLaren is based on the fact that they were the team that brought him up through his career and that he won his first championship with, also it gives him the opportunity to race alongside his idol, Senna. Hakkinen is an ambassador for Mercedes so it still works.

There will be scope for driver changes in future seasons due to promotions, relegations and driver performance. More on that later.

Oh I understand now, I thought you added the 2 points per championship before you did the averages. Thanks for clarifying.

PROMOTION & RELEGATION

Division 1 - Bottom 5 drivers and 2 constructors relegated.
Division 2 - Top 5 drivers and 2 constructors promoted, bottom 5 drivers and 2 constructors relegated.
Division 3 - Top 5 drivers and 2 constructors promoted, bottom 5 drivers and 2 constructors relegated.
Division 4 - Top 5 drivers and 2 constructors promoted, bottom 5 drivers and 3 constructors relegated.
Tier 5 - Top 2 drivers from each division plus 3rd placed driver with highest score, and top constructor from each division plus 2nd placed constructor with highest score promoted, bottom 4 drivers from each division relegated plus raceoff results, bottom 2 constructors relegated plus raceoff results.
Tier 6 - Top 2 drivers from each division promoted plus raceoff results, top constructor from each division promoted plus raceoff results.

THE RACEOFF

There will be two Tier 5/6 "raceoffs" to determine which drivers and constructors will be promoted, relegated or stay in the division they are in. The Drivers Raceoff features the 17th & 18th placed drivers from Tier 5, and the 3rd & 4th placed drivers from Tier 6, whilst the Constructors Raceoff features the 9th placed constructors from Tier 5 and the 2nd placed constructors from Tier 6.

Both raceoffs will therefore have a field of 12 drivers/6 constructors. It is necessary to have two separate raceoffs as due to drivers having to race for the same constructor that they raced for in the regular season, it is likely that there will be some drivers who's division for next season is already known, but they are supporting their constructor's efforts, and vice versa.

The highest classified 2 constructors or 4 drivers in the applicable race will be awarded a place in Tier 5 for the next season, with the remaining entrants competing in Tier 6.

DRIVER CHANGES

With the drivers and constructors championships being separate entities, there will be the necessity for some drivers to switch teams between seasons due to one (or both) moving into different divisions.

As this competition is a comprehensive list of Formula One drivers (and not a pool of drivers derived from a much larger pool of potential drivers as in real life), drivers can only move teams if they swap with a driver already established in that team. Multi-layered swaps (involving several drivers & teams) are allowed.

Driver changes not enforced by promotions/relegations are also allowed. These may come about due to driver performance, new real-life driver-team associations, or other reasons that will be dealt with on an ad hoc basis.

In every case I will try to follow the list of criteria as explained in the original post as closely as possible.

Looking forward to this!
I like this idea, This has always bothered me that today's points are far more than previous years. With less races per year in older championships it was so easy to miss out on a title due to reliability and misfortune. Good work
Amazing. I hope Alonso can win the championship :D

I'm really looking forward for this!
It sounds pretty amazing.

Will there be a short race report from all the main races? (Or some pics as well?)
