Trident Racing

Tough weekend for us, our car have technical difficulties and Trident's worse day goes this season. Oh farewell, next race might be good.

Driver Quotes:

Adam Carroll: I don't have to say, the oil leak causes our car to retire, it was a huge disappointment. We're looking forward to a sprint race so we can race to the finish.
Andreas Zuber: It was worse day, our car have problems and as the Trident Racing goes very unlucky.

A shame to see Alvaro's engine accidentally itself and deny us a 1-2, but Alx did a fine job to win.

F1 Qualifying

Q1

Q1 got off to an usual start as whilst there was no rain in the air the track started almost completely due to a rain storm just before the F1 cars took to the track, essentially meaning the drivers had one lap to do the job right at the end of the session. Despite this there was little surprise at the bottom as both Super Aguri cars along with Mark Webber's Red Bull all failed to make the cut, whilst both Williams also joined them on the sidelines. The only slight surprise of the session was the slow pace of the Toyota's with Trulli also missing the cut whilst Da Matta just scraped through in 16th, whilst Lotterer proved the Ferrari's are not untouchable after splitting the scarlet red pair.

Q2

By the time Q2 started the track was now bone dry which finally allowed us to see the true pace of the teams. Up at the front Ralf Schumacher put Ferrari quickest again however Fernando Alonso kept him honest in his Renault, whilst Montoya's presence in 4th showed us that we could have quite a mix up at the front. At the back however it was much the same as Vettel limped to 16th place with rookie Hamilton in 15th, far behind his more experienced team mate Davidson who made it through the session with relative ease. Da Matta's 14th placed grid slot showed us that Toyota could well be in trouble this weekend and the Brazilian will lineup alongside his fellow countrymen as Barrichello could only manage 13th on his return to Formula One. Finally Sutil and Coulthard made up the list of drivers who would not take part in the fight for pole.

Q3

Just as Q2 the final pole shootout was also dry and unsurprisingly it was Ferrari who lead the way as Massa heads a Ferrari 1-2 for tomorrow's Australian GP. Massa set his best time on his first attempt, eclipsing his team mate by just over a tenth to take the 5th pole of his career. Further back Davidson showed that he and Honda have the pace to compete by putting his car third on the grid, Raikkonen will line up 5th as he starts his title defence whilst Michael Schumacher will be pleased with his 8th place after qualifying 21st here in 2006.

BMW Sauber statement

Unfortunately, we are not where we believed we should be. Coulthard disappointed by narrowly missing the Q3, which is embarassing for the team. JPM, however did some decent work qualifying 6th. We believe we have a good tactic for the race and a podium finish is still achievable. Both cars finishing in the points is another goal that we are focusing on. We all hope for a good race and out of collisions and other accidents, so that we can prove our pace.
Honda
A great showing from Anthony and a nice debut qualifying effort from Lewis. Seeing that we might be able to challenge points and more really excites the team!
Spyker

Not a bad showing, I'd like Sutil to be a bit higher up. It's his first grand prix though, so I'll let it slide.
Super Nova

Good job by our both drivers, they didn't get a podium, but the 4th and 5th places gives us a well deserved second place in the championship

Renault F1 Team
We are pleased with Fernando's result. Michael is quite happy to have performed much better than last year. Bring on the race!
Toro Rosso
That wasn't the result we were looking for if we're honest, but the times between p3 and p15 are really close and we're confident in our race setup. It's great to see Rubens back in F1 and we're sure that he will be right on the pace once he's got a few race laps under his belt. We also hope our preseason work on reliability will make sure we pick up points if others falter.
McLaren

The results we expected, but the gap to Ferrari is still too big. But we should be able to fight for a podium finish.

Didn't know that this is allowed, always thought the 3rd driver has to drive in FP ;)

Very disappointing indeed. We didn't expect to hit the top ten today, but losing one car in Q1 already and the other hitting the end of the Q2 grid, that's obviously not where we want to be. But again, we hope that our work on the reliability of the car will help us to snatch a point or two tomorrow.

@Kedy
The rules don't state that you have to use all your drivers. Of course Nico will get his chances in the FP over the season and in the end it's my loss if I don't improve his perf during the FP sessions. This way I don't have a good alternative if Webber or Vettel fail to bring good results.

Disappointing start to the season for us at Toyota..Jarno just couldn't make the lap count on the drying track bit unlucky there..Cristiano just failed to make q3 by a tenth..not where we expected to be here at the first race but our reliability has always been pretty decent so hope we can profit from other cars failures..
Excellent qualifying for Ferrari, both Felipe and Ralf are showing what they are made off, now just to convert it into the race result!

Apologies for the lack of racing yesterday. I chose to get the F1 race run first before doing the GP2 Sprint race just to get it out of the way, only to get within ten laps of the end before iTunes decided it wanted to update and crashed the game...

But I've thankfully managed to get both races run today so coverage will be up later this evening (Y)

We're looking forward to the sprint race, great to see you back while missing day 3.
Pantano Wins GP2 Sprint Race

Giorgio Pantano capped off a strong showing this weekend after taking victory in this mornings GP2 Sprint Race. After setting the pace in yesterday's feature race after setting the fastest lap Pantano charged through the field from his 4th place grid slot to deny Karun Chandhok victory with just two laps to go.

Off the start there was little action at turn 1 and turn 3 with the only change at the front was Pantano losing 4th to Senna before immediately retaking it down into turn 3. However lap two was not as clean as Danielsson missed his breaking point for turn 3 and dropped to ninth whilst Maldonado punted off Javier Villa to join the Dane in the gravel trap, with all three dropping to the very back of the field.

Pantano pace was clear early on as he set consecutive fastest laps to close of third placed Soucek whilst Lapierre behind had a great view a of stellar overtake by Alvaro Parente who's brilliant start from 19th got even better as the Italian swooped round the outside of the ART to take 9th place.

Lap five saw more drama as the charging Pantano made contact with Soucek as the latter tried to defend his position at turn 3 which left Pantano with just two cars left to pass and Soucek down in last place, or at least he would have been had Zuber was shoved off the track by his team mate Carroll moments later before the Northern Irish man then spun just six corners later to add further woes to Trident's weekend.

A momentary dip in on track action was then cut short as Pantano relinquished Filippi's grip on 2nd place as Rossi ran into brake issues, forcing the Italian to pit dropping well behind the pack. Two laps later Danielsson was busy off-roading again as the Dan ran wide at turn 13 and fell back to 17th whilst Pantano was busy taking chunks of time out of Chandhok's lead.

Danica Patrick then became the latest driver to be left fuming in their cockpits as a clumsy move from Nakajima left the American facing the wrong way at turn 9 and also very thankful/lucky as Bruno Senna spun out in dramatic fashion moments later, narrowly missing the Durango machine, with suspension failure.

The final overtaking moves of the race were courtesy of Mike Conway who outbraked Filippi at turn 1 for 3rd whilst Pantano finally caught and passed Chandhok with relative ease under braking for turn 13. However the action was not done there as Pastor Maldonado decided he had not had enough of the limelight as the Venezuelan pitched iSport's Dan Wheldon into a spectacular role in an ambitious overtaking move under braking for turn 3. Thankfully Wheldon emerged unhurt having was left seething as Pastor drove away and finished the race.

In the end Pantano won with relative ease that will surely raise a few eyebrows, Chandhok held onto his 2nd place whilst Mike Conway had another quiet drive to 3rd.

Montoya Inherits Melbourne Opener

Juan Pablo Montoya has won the Australian GP in dramatic fashion after inheriting the lead just a few of laps from the checkered flag. The Colombian took the lead after a stellar drive from Felipe Massa was tragically cut short after his engine failed with just two laps remaining, allowing the BMW man to pick his first win since the 2005 European Grand Prix, and BMW's first Hungary last season.

Of the start however despite holding his lead through turn 1 Massa promptly outbraked himself at turn 3, gifting the lead to his team mate whilst the Brazilian was forced to settle for 2nd ahead of the fast starting Raikkonen, which would then be 3rd after the Finn easily slipped passed the Ferrari at the turn 11 chicane further round the lap. But the defending world champion's race would soon unravel as after quickly making his way up to the back of Schumacher's Ferrari, the two made contact as Kimi attempted a more ambitious pass into the chicane, pitching the Ferrari into a barrel roll which in addition to forcing Schumacher out of the race on the spot and dropping Kimi down to 7th, will also see Schumacher miss the next round in Malaysia after suffering a concussion.

Schumacher's retirement left Massa back in the lead with a slim margin over the Renault pair of Alonso and Michael Schumacher, with Davidson, Lotterer, Kubica, Hamilton and Barrichello making up the remainder of the top 8. Further back Montoya had dropped out of the top 10 to 11th with Da Matta close behind, whilst after a strong start Glock was dropping like a stone and lost five positions in just over two laps which put him right at the back of the pack before his brakes failed on lap 8, forcing him to retire.

The first round of pitstops did little to affect the overall order as Massa retained his lead head of Alonso and Schumacher, but an early stop from Montoya which dropped him back into clear air - along with some stellar overtakes against Hamilton at turn 9 and Barrichello at turn 3 - moved him well up the order and into 5th. Others who benefitted from the first stops were the Red Bulls who were now 10th and 11th with Webber and Vettel, whilst Davidson was close behind Montoya. As the majority of the field began to spread out it was Montoya and Davidson who provided most of the action as the pair who traded fastest laps before a collision between the Renault drivers gave them both a free position and dropped Alonso down to 6th behind Kubica.

The second phase of pit stops did little to add to the excitement on track with the only notable difference after being the omission of Jarno Trulli who's engine failed shortly after his stop however further back Montagny and Sutil were also flying and the pair as the pair quickly dispatched Hamilton's Honda after the Brit span off at turn 9, with Sutil setting the fastest lap in the process. After these stops it was still Massa leading comfortably from Montoya and Davidson with Schumacher and now Lotterer, who was almost as quick as his younger team mate and it seemed it would stay that way to the finish. However the racing God's had other ideas as with just three three laps to go Massa began reporting a loss of power to his engineer before he lost all power entirely just after starting his penultimate lap leaving Montoya to snatch an unlikely win with Davidson, Schumacher and Lotterer coming in close behind. Kubica came home fifth, Alonso sixth and fuming at his new team mate, whilst Raikkonen and Da Matta wrapped up the points.

Of the remaining drivers Barrichello just missed out on points on his return to racing, Red Bull's 10th and 11th placed finish will at least give the Austrian outfit some hope of future points, whilst Williams have a lot to do after finishing 16th and 18th.

Also instead of awarding the now traditional 'Driver of the Day Award', instead now we've got a few seasons under our belt I think it's time to introduce... the 'Useless Fact(s) For The Day' ;)

Today's useless fact(s):

Felipe Massa's pole position time of 1:26.410 is the 4th quickest lap ever recorded at Melbourne in the series history. Only Montoya, Coulthard and Michael Schumacher have gone quicker than the Brazilian, after all dipping into very low 1:24's back in 2004. Meanwhile Timo Glock's time of 1:28.607, which won the German the honour of starting from 22nd on the grid, would have been good enough for pole position in 2006, 2005 and 2003.

McLaren

We had hoped for a better result here, Kimi had a good pace in the opening laps, but unfortunately he damaged the car when he made contact with the Ferrari. Else he might have had good chances to win. Robert did well, staying out of trouble the entire race and fighting his way into the points.

Good solid drive and good strategy enabled Cristiano to pick up a point which is a not bad start considering our car is not quite quick enough yet..Unlucky for Jarno with the engine trouble as our reliability is normally really good..We need to work more on the pace of the car to get our drivers back to the front :)

Also lmao at Maldonado can't even get through a simulation race without causing havoc!!!:)
