GPG Nations Cup Rd 4 Chinese GP – Race Day

Part 1

Hello once again, and welcome back to Shanghai. We are now set for the start of what should be a cracking race. San Marino took pole position, and starting next to them on the front row will be New Zealand. Behind them on the second row will be Monaco and China. Who will be our winner after 36 laps of racing? I guess we’ll find out later as the RD is now ready to get this race underway.

Weather Report

The cars have returned from their warmup lap, and we are now ready for the start. San Marino is on pole, with New Zealand starting alongside, and Monaco and China behind on the second row. Once all 5 lights go out, we will be underway.

The race is go!

De Boer in the Netherlands car looks to have made a good start, and is already trying to find a way past both Tafuro and McGregor.

Unfortunately for the Dutchman, he has no choice but to stay behind the two.

The pack is all close to each other as they negotiate their way through the Spiral.

Ihara in the Japan car looks to have been involved in an incident that has also involved Nikolov in the Bulgaria car.

As the replay shows, there was contact made between Ihara and Nikolov, sending the Japan car spinning out, and the Bulgaria car airborne.

Nikolov was able to make it back onto the ground without any damage occurred, even if it is in the sandtrap.

Fortunately, both cars are able to continue on.

Scott Dixon in the New Zealand car is our current race leader.

Tung in the China car is doing his best to keep close to Grimaldi in the Monaco car while also defending from Tafuro in the Italy car.

It looks like there has been contact between Aspenstrom in the Sweden car and De Boer in the Netherlands car.

The contact sends the Sweden car wide, and Aspenstrom ends up losing the position to De Boer while recovering.

Back to the front, and it seems Silvestre in the San Marino car has lost second place to Grimaldi in the Monaco car.

Aspenstrom has lost even more positions since going off not too long ago.

The replay shows that he had ran wide on the exit of the hairpin.

Dixon in the New Zealand car takes the fastest lap.

Taytoh in the Ireland car wants his chance to try and get by Aspenstrom, but he isn’t able to make it by.

As a result, Hatfield in the UAE car has managed to close in closer onto the back of the Ireland car.

Behind him however, is a train of cars just waiting to make a move.

1.5s currently separates first and second.

McGregor in the Australia car now sits in front of the Italy car.

Tung and Silvestre look set to drag each other down to the hairpin.

Tung wins the drag, and slots into 3rd.

McGregor meanwhile just watches on.

According to the timings, Keranen in the Finland car has managed to get by both Kederer in the Germany car and Domenech in the Argentina car.

It’s very close between Kuei in the South Korea car and Paddock in the Great Britain car.

Here is how the current top 10 have moved since the race start.

Ihara in the Japan car has managed to close the gap between herself and Nikolov in the Bulgaria car.

With the race now 3 laps in, let’s take a look at the current standings.

Silvestre in the San Marino car looks to have lost another position, this time to McGregor in the Australia car.

He tries to fight back, but is unable to retake the position.

Dixon again takes the fastest lap.

Domenech in the Argentina car has slipped back to 22nd.

We ride onboard with Tafuro in the Italy car as he chases down Silvestre in the San Marino car.

It’s looking likely that we may see a passing attempt soon from the Italian.

Further back, Cremasco in the Brazil car is doing his best to close in onto the back of the Netherlands car.

Tafuro has managed to get by Silvestre.

From first to sixth within 4 laps is not what Silvestre and Team San Marino would’ve had in mind.

McGregor and Tafuro have both moved up a position. What has happened to the China car?

The replay shows that there is a trail of smoke coming from the back of the China car, which had caused Tung to slow down slightly and allowed cars to get by.

All the drivers behind Tung will need to take caution.

Which to the looks of it they have managed to do so.

Tung finally pulls off to the side of the track and retires from the race with a Water Leak. He’ll be gutted with this result.

Back to the action, and it looks like Taytoh could be in a bit of trouble.

He manages to continue on, but it looks like De Boer in the Netherlands car was caught up in the process.

From what the replay shows, it appears that there was contact made between Taytoh and Cremasco, which caused the Brazil car to run into the back of the Netherlands car, sending De Boer wide.

No doubt De Boer will be slightly annoyed by what had just happened.

Aspenstrom and Hatfield look to be engaged in their own battle.

Which is won by the Swedish driver.

Silva in the Portugal car is next in line to take on Hatfield.

Domenech in the Argentina car has managed to catch up to the back of the Bulgaria car.

Let’s take a look at the current standings.

It’s time for our first break of the coverage. We hope to be back soon.

Team China

Such a shame to see Cheng retire from the race in such a strong position. For our home race, it's not only a crushing blow for us, but for the fans as well who all came to see us do well. We'll regroup and hopefully be back stronger in the next race.

Hm, if P1 to P15 retire I have a realistic chance to win ;)

We're right on the back of Kederer, we should be able to sneak past. If we can, points are definitely a chance. But we clearly should have gone towards some more quali speed
Wow, +8 positions at the first lap, great work by Kuei
No boost and I'm currently at 8th

Awesome, things are looking good :)
Not a amazing race... From a disappointing 16th to a average 12th... Meh!!!!!

Good start. Keep going!

GPG Nations Cup Rd 4 Chinese GP - Race Day

Part 2

Welcome back.

Girard in the France car has a reasonable gap back to Cremasco in the Brazil car.

As for Cremasco, he is doing his best to maintain his 8th position.

Aspenstrom can only sit back and wait for his chance to make a move.

Taytoh in the Ireland car is looking to make a move on the Brazil car.

And he manages to make the move stick. Meanwhile, the timing shows that Silvestre has lost yet another position.

Silvestre tries to fight back.

It seems that he wasn’t close enough, and now he has to defend form Girard who has managed to get a bit closer.

Domenech in the Argentina car has managed to get by Nikolov in the Bulgaria car.

The first round of stops is now underway as Dixon in the New Zealand car is the first of the front runners in for a stop.

That gives Grimaldi in the Monaco car the race lead.

Girard has managed to get by Silvestre, and the timing shows that Briere in the Canada car has taken to the pits for his stop.

Frutiger-Fussli in the Switzerland car is now in front of the Great Britain car, which must mean that Paddock was passed by a few cars.

Dixon now finds himself in 18th after rejoining from taking his stop.

While Briere rejoins in 20th.

And Nikolov rejoins in last place after taking his stop.

Australia, Italy, France and San Marino are all in for their first stop.

Tafuro has managed to jump McGregor in the pits. A great stop from Italy.

Girard rejoins the track after taking his stop, and finds himself having to defend from Briere.

Hatfield in the UAE car must’ve taken his stop as well.

More pitstop action gets underway.

Silva in the Portugal car now finds himself in front of Hatfield.

Race leader Grimaldi is in for his stop.

As is the last of the cars still to pit.

With all drivers having now completed their first stop, let’s take a look at the current standings.

Aspenstrom now finds himself inside the points, but Silva will not be wanting to let him get too far ahead.

De Boer currently sits in 14th ahead of Kederer.

There is a battle taking place between Kuei and Ihara.

Into the hairpin, and Ihara is making a move on Kuei.

And the Japanese driver succeeds in getting by.

Kuei however decides not to let Ihara get too far ahead and keeps close to the back of the Japan car.

Frutiger-Fussli in the Switzerland car hasn’t been making much progress since the start of the race.

Out front, Dixon has this race under control.

With 20 laps left to go, let’s take a look at the current standings.

Domenech has run off road. What caused him to run off?

The replay shows that he ran off all on his own after locking up his brakes.

At least he is able to continue on.

Silvestre lost a position to Cremasco not too long ago, now it seems likely he’ll lose another one to Aspenstrom.

Which he does.

Now he has a bunch more cars behind him just waiting to make their move.

Hatfield in the UAE car has managed to get by the San Marino car.

Pretty soon, Silva will be looking for his chance to make a move as well.

It’s now time for another break. We hope to be back soon.

Not bad. A spin, & yet almost caught up to where we qualified. Hope Ihara drives well without further incident. Maybe points are possible if a high attrition rate

Antero is doing ok, he's moved up from the pitstops, just needs to keep up the pressure on those ahead, and once he is released he can gain some more. Points are still in the question for sure.

On further inspection, he seems to have lost some ground, perhaps a wide turn or something. Shame, but hopefully the speed is still there

Not bad for us, a podium placement would be awesome :-)

Part 3

Welcome back once again.

Silva in the Portugal car is looking for his move on Silvestre down the straight, and looks to have made the move stick.

Behind them, De Boer is looking for his chance to get by Kederer.

But wait, Keranen in the Finland car is looking to make a move on both the Netherlands and Germany cars.

The Finland driver goes up the inside.

And succeeds in getting by, while De Boer was able to get by Kederer.

It seems Ihara in the Japan car was able to take advantage of the situation by gaining a position off Kederer.

Not contempt with passing Kederer, Ihara looks for a passing move on De Boer, and succeeds in getting by the Netherlands car.

De Boer decides to try and gain his position back from Ihara.

But is unable to do so, and ends up losing ground to the Japan car.

It’s getting close between the cars near the rear of the field.

Silvestre looks to be in danger of losing another position, this time to Keranen.

The Finland car succeeds in getting by, leaving Silvestre sitting in 13th.

Still not much is happening out at the front of the field.

We have a battle on our hands between Cremasco and Aspenstrom.

Aspenstrom has a look up the inside down the straight.

And makes his move into the hairpin.

That moves the Swedish driver up into 8th.

Ihara is getting closer to the back of the San Marino car.

Unseen by the cameras, it looks like Frutiger-Fussli was able to get by Kuei.

Cremasco may soon have his hands full having to defend from Hatfield.

And maybe even Silva in the Portugal car.

Down the straight, Hatfield looks for his chance to get by Cremasco.

The Brazilian however defends into the corner.

And Cremasco is able to hold onto his position.

Silvestre is still in front of Ihara, which is allowing both De Boer and Kederer to slowly close in.

With the race getting into the final stages, let’s check out the current standings.

Unseen by the cameras, Hatfield in the UAE has finally managed to get by Cremasco in the Brazil car.

Now Silva will be looking for his chance to get by as well.

He has a look up the inside down the straight.

He looks to have made the move stick, but Cremasco immediately fights back.

However, Silva has the track position needed to get in front.

Keranen has a good view of the battle between Silva and Cremasco.

Silva looks to have slowed up a bit, which has allowed Cremasco to retake his position back, and now gives Keranen a chance to make a move.

Cremasco manages to hold Keranen back, but isn’t out of the woods just yet.

Being in 14th is not what Silvestre would be wanting right now.

At the front of the field, Grimaldi looks to have made up ground on Dixon.

Pitlane is about to get pretty busy as the second round of stops is now underway.

We could be seeing our first lead change of the race right here. Grimaldi has closed in onto the back of Dixon, and now looks to the inside down the straight.

He goes up the inside into the corner.

And makes the move stick.

However, the move was for nothing as now both Grimaldi and Dixon are in the pits for their second stops.

The battle of the teams has gone to New Zealand, who rejoin the track in front of the Monaco car.

Kuei is in for her stop.

Kederer looks to have lost out during the stops.

Briere and Aspenstrom are in for their second stops.

Silvestre is in as well.

Aspenstrom rejoins the track, and finds himself having to defend from Hatfield.

This race just hasn’t gone the way Silvestre would’ve been hoping for.

De Boer is in for his second stop.

And rejoins the track in front of Silvestre.

With all drivers having completed their second stops, let’s check out the current standings.

It’s time for another break. When we come back, we’ll see who our winner will be.

Antero what a move! Out of nowhere!
Still, from a low position, he has really showed some class to be able to be in the points so far, with 6 to go, as unlikely as it sounds we might win a mini nordic battle and get the Swedes, but 10th is a great result so far, we'll be happy with that
*fingers crossed*

Wow! Very much impressed by Ihara san's driving. Really storming through the field. Hope the car holds up & a few more positions are gained. Some points would be nice in a Far East race

Part 4

Welcome back for the final time.

McGregor continues to chase down Tafuro for the final spot on the podium.

The other battle taking place is between Taytoh and Briere.

Briere has a look up the inside down the straight and into the corner.

And the Canadian driver makes the move stick.

As the camera focuses in on the Switzerland car, there is a move being made by De Boer on Domenech.

De Boer succeeds in getting by Domenech.

However, Domenech fights back in an attempt to get the position back, but is unable to make it back in front.

It’s been a disappointing race for Nikolov ever since the first lap.

Girard is looking on course to finish inside the top 5.

Here is how the top 10 have moved since the start of the race.

At the rear of the field, it looks like Paddock in the Great Britain car is slowly catching up to the back of the Switzerland car.

Dixon in the New Zealand car is looking comfortable out in front.

2 laps left to go.

Paddock looks to have lost a bit of ground on the Switzerland car.

3 seconds difference between Dixon and Grimaldi, but the Monaco driver is running out of laps to try and mount a challenge for the lead.

We are now on the final lap.

Silva looks close enough to the back of Cremasco that we may see a last lap battle between the two.

Out in front though, Dixon crosses the line to win the Chinese GP.

Grimaldi finishes in 2nd.

And Tafuro rounds off the podium in 3rd.

Silva managed to get in front of Cremasco, and beats him across the line for 11th.

Congratulations Scott Dixon and Team New Zealand, our winners of Rd 4. It was a very interesting race, and we hope you enjoyed every minute of our coverage. We hope to see you all back here next time for Rd 5. So until then, it’s goodbye from Shanghai.
