So yeah I think it's official: I'm so tired of ranting on about the ugly cars that I've decided to live with it... School is in session for me and I don't have the time or energy to scream at my computer screen for minutes on hand.

People, these cars better be dang fast for me to completely accept the noses. I will admit some of the teams actually got it to look dang good. Others fell flat.

In the meantime we're all sitting and waiting for the season to start...

I'm gravedigging a *lot*, but there was a difference at the time between a 'raised' nose and a 'high' one - I remember the distinction being fairly clear from a season review or something else from the time that I read. 1991 is actually a good example:

'Low' nose: Nosecone drops down in more or less a straight line from the cockpit to the tip.

'High' nose: Bodywork remains high until it reaches the suspension, then drops at a sharper angle, which allows more air to pass the nose and reach the sidepods and undertray. Lots of variations on this one! Newey pioneered it on the March 881, and took the concept with him all the way to the FW16.

'Raised' nose: An evolution of the high nose; the nosecone never actually meets the front wing. Developed by Harvey Postlethwaite on the Tyrrell 019, presumably as a result of looking into Newey's concept.

Sorry for the mild hijack, but single-seater design concepts is my area of boring people interest ;)

Isn't it funny that, 21 years later, even us laymen know that that wing will have been useless at that height? ;)

I'll argue with your definition a bit. That Benetton B190 is definitely a low nosed car. What defined a high nose in those days was not the nose itself, but the presence of the splitter underneath the "chin" area under the drivers legs. Then, as now, that was the key area, not the nosecone itself. Today's cars show this even more: the designers are willing to put this very nasty kink on the top of the nose just to open up the area underneath a little more.

Actually, I agree - the B190 was a poor choice, and I think your definition is spot on. The FW14 is a much better example:

This is the B, but AFAIK the nose and splitter aren't too dissimilar.

Nose looks quite narrow, which is a welcome change from the wider noses.

Hopefully it's more accurate than the McLaren preview (the one under the sheet) which was the exact same image they used for 2011. ;)

Seeing that image though, it really shows how skinny the cars are in areas. We all go on about how anorexic the Williams rear end was last year (and to a lesser degree this year), but seeing a car from above with no real detail, you wonder how the cars stay together at all.

If the teaser is anything to go by... Then it's a beauty. But it's like you say they'll throw any old image together.

No way will the MGP03 be that skinny on the nose.

They have the biggest platypus of them all! (which is wonderful!)

I will be shocked if it is that thin.

Jenson drives it like he owns it; Lewis drives it like he stole it

Here's hoping for a Brawn look-alike :D! Well, as realistically possible with the regs.

Now that would've been gorgeous. I dunno why Ferrari created a lego car....

All the teams have just followed RBR in making a high chasis apart from Mclaren.

Due to that reason they cannot just use a nose like that as the areo wont work, it was all explained on the BBC.

I am hoping Merc dont just follow the trend.

It's not just Red Bull who have done that though - while I think they were the ones who introduced the 'platypus' style nose in 2009, other teams have had the high nose structure at the same time. McLaren have been the exception to the rules for a few years now. Other teams, while not necessarily having an especially high nose, have taken a different philosophy around what goes on behind the nose, and it makes sense for them to have the higher nose tip now.

Unless Mercedes have changed their car considerably, it will have a high nose, as that's what suits their approach.
