Not quite so.

The Tyrrell team were first to experiment with the raised nose in 1990.

Benetton still had the low nose in 1990

And followed suit with the raised nose from 1991

Some teams fluctuated between the two philosophies, Tyrrell, Ferrari, Pacific etc. The leadings teams of the era Williams & McLaren didn't follow suit until 1995, some 5 seasons after it first appeared.

I don't believe Mclaren have missed a "trick" either. Their general concept has been different to Red Bull for a while and yet the performance is very close. The other teams are more like Red Bull because in f1 it's rather fashionable to imitate the trends set by Adrian Newy.

Mclaren have always gone their own way and never copied. When the rest were running high noses in 1991, 1992 and 93 they did not.

For years now mclaren have run a lower chassis than the rest, if anything they have a better understanding on what's needed. But has this been what's been holding them back?

Many seem to think Ferrari have got it very wrong with their susspension and will have understeer and will not get load into the tyres.

We will see soon.

Intrigued to see what Adrian comes out with. That nose doesnt suit the Ferrari, mind you I dont think its suits any car but thats just me. I like to see clean lines.

I really want to see what way Mercedes petronas AMG go. I do hope that they have something special up their sleave and I know it's probabaly not realistic but I hope they lean away from the trend more like Mclaren ...... but I know that this wont be so. As has already been said Mclaren has for years developed their overall package individually and have a very good understanding of how to get the best out of their cars. Unfortuneatly Merecedes will probably follow what they see that works ie the 'Newey' brigade, rather than what they can develope individually simply because they havn't as many F1 hours as Mclaren since their imergence back into the sport.

McLaren have run a lower nose since the regulations changed in 2009 - in fact they lowered their nose a few races into last season. I always wondered how that splitter worked under their nose, and why Williams ended up abandoning it. But anyway, pre-2009, everyone ran very low and fat noses, whereas back in 1998 when the skinny track and grooved tyres were introduced, everyone but McLaren (Newey's car) went for higher noses. The higher nose is meant to increase the venturi effect (which is the compression of air under the chassis, followed by the uncompression stage, known as the diffuser), but it's all to do with how they want to direct the air to the back of the car and to the underside of the car.

Alonso seems to thrive with under-steering cars, remember what his championship Renaults were like - they had a very rear biased weight distribution that meant they had great traction off the line, and the cars seemed to understeer terribly, but they managed to make the tyres last and still go very fast. Not many drivers seem to like that set up, but it didn't help Fisichella who looked terrible as his team-mate. It doesn't bode well for Massa who needs to improve this year. Massa did much better with a Schumacher tuned car which concentrated on a much better front end turn in.

I really think Force India will be very competitive in the early stages of the season, but I guess we'll get more of an idea tomorrow. They seem to have made a big step forward, whereas others are either hiding their innovations very well, or they don't really seem to have moved on much from last year.

Sorry I meant to say Williams that was the fastest car at the time. But yes other things could be taken into account for the Williams speed.

Reports saying Mercedes (2011 car of Rosberg) sounds strange.

Is this to do with 2012 parts?
