Absolutely BRILLIANT little 60 minute tv doc on BBC Four.

Highlights the perils of F1 in the early days.

Never knew why Jackie Stewart taped a spanner to his steering wheel until now. Shocking.

I watched that. Really brilliant.

David Purley was an absolute hero.

Have a look at this post - [www.grandprixgames.org]

I haven't tested it with this video yet, but in theory it should work.

If anyone ever wondered why Dave and others dislike Chapman, then this show is a great example of why.

Indeed. I actually thought the show painted Chapman in a slightly favourable light, compared to how they could have portrayed him with other drivers interviews. Danger was part of the times, but men like Chapman didn't help the situation.

This documentary is brilliant, but like the Senna movie, ends in a heartbreaking way.

I can't believe that someone at Honda actually decided to build and race a magnesium car! :o

It was the bit where Chapman ordered them to make the rear wings out of aluminium and polystyrene and it stil bent due to the downforce, even after stronger materials before had already broken. Insane.

I've always questioned the logic behind that...

I couldn't believe, right at the end, when David Purley was trying to get other drivers to stop to help Williamson, they just kept driving. A ferociously burning car less than a metre away and they didn't stop to help someone being burnt alive? Wow...

As Incident 2k9 said, David Purley was a true hero.

To be fair, radio was non existent in those days and because Purley had parked his car out of the way the other drivers assumed he was the one that got out of the burning car and was just directing traffic for the marshals. The marshals themselves could do little as they didn't have any fire proof overalls. Very sad moment.

Sounds bad doesn't it? What makes it even worse is it wasn't the first car which was built from that. The Mercedes 300 which crashed and burned in the 1955 Le Mans disaster was also made from magnesium. This type of car had a history of catastrophe already, and they still went ahead with it.

there was a 1 hour prog right before this one called 60 Years of Formula 1 or something, that showed the event held in Bahrain 2010 where all the living World Champs got together and drove their cars, and they all spoke about their heroes from when they were young and who they admired.

both shows were very good.

here's part 2

and 3

can't find part 1.

edit: found part 1 and 4 but they've been blocked by the BBC for copyright infringement.

Watched this twice in the last few days, truly incredible viewing.

One thing that I'd read many times and was only driven home to me after watching it was the similarity in the situations Graham and Damon Hill found themselves in. Both were paired with the best driver of their era who were killed in possibly unstable cars, but they put any fears they may have had at the back of their minds and kept at it. You could hardly say the Hills were the greatest talents to grace Formula 1, but they were brave b**tards all the same.

Chapman was put forward as the villain of the piece, but despite the flimsiness of the cars you could still detect the admiration of the drivers for how well some of them handled, even if they had ended up killing many of their friends.

The interviews were commendably down to earth, notably from Jochen Rindt's widow; then again relating the insanity of cars haring through forests with no armco hardly needs a whole lot of theatrics to drive the point home.

Is that footage of David Purley trying his best not some of the most uncomfortable you've ever seen? Fantastic documentary, truly mindboggling that was how it was.

Excellent, Seen most of the footage before in one way or another, but it's nice to see it all in context. I wish the beeb would stop hoarding all this footage now, they have nothing to gain from doing it.

Pardon the ignorance, but why are we supposed to hate Jim Clark now? From this documentary he appears only as a brave dude who was very good at doing what he did.

You may be confused between Chapman and Clark? (I don't mean that as sarcastic as it reads, sorry, lol). Not many people have a bad word to say against Clark, but a lot of people hate Chapman for the delibratly dangerous cars he's designed which killed drivers.
