They should just have it on the day after the races, or on the Thursday before races. The vast majority of the equipment and staff would already be in place and the only extra measure you'd need would be any development parts you wanted to test (which they usually carry and test on a Friday anyway). Don't use it on street-circuits (or any circuit where it disadvantages the locals in some meaningful way) and limit it to non-fly-away races.

Limit it to young drivers or use a formula which heavily favours young drivers with no F1 racing experience, but doesn't rule out emergency drivers benefiting from it (such as Schumacher's anticipated return in 2009, or Heidfeld last season).

The F1 circus is on the road for 24 weeks of a 52 week year already, and while that's great for us fans, in my eyes adding extra weeks would be wrong for those involved. It's too much.

Just do what Brundle suggested. Cut Friday out and make FP1/FP2 on Saturday, 2 hours each and bin FP3 (providing 4 hours of FP like before). Move Qualifying to Saturday morning, and the race to Saturday afternoon. The races which have the most support events have races like Porsches, which are fitted with lights and can run in the dark if needed due to the condensed schedule.

Now you have a smaller weekend, so use the Monday for testing.

Assuming you meant qualifying and the race on Sunday, then that wouldn't be a bad idea! It would provide far more value for the average fan, who don't really want to watch Porches or GP2 and just want to see F1.

What about the races without support events,why not bin FP1 and FP2 and just make that friday a test day? Great for the people paying for weekend ticket? Just split one car between the two race drivers, and the other car let the young/test driver have all day?

I think there are quite a few ways to do it cheaply for the teams, and logistically easier than what it has been in the past. Hopefully Todt will see the ways he can achieve this and do it

I think it's definitely better to have testing after the race, rather than before the race. If you look back at what happened when we had mid-week testing before a GP, it typically made it quite processional.

It would be great to go to tracks like Algarve, Imola or Red Bull Ring for these tests, and you could market it as quite a big event - maybe a prize or something. This probably wouldn't be agreed to by the teams, however.

@SchueyFan F1 should definitely have testing in countries that don't have F1 races atm, but mostly for reserve or development drivers.

By doing this it gives these drivers a chance to develop their driving and communication skills, feed data back to the teams without overloading the race drivers, and give the drivers confidence in finding a full-time F1 seat.

Finally it would give us more F1 events to watch without giving the race drivers too much to do, especially with up to 20 races a year atm, maybe 21 in 2012, and more "free time" relative to the mid 00s when the drivers had virtually no family time. This is essential in my opinion, in particular for those with children.

I struggle to take what is basically a stock Joomla site as a serious media source.

I hope they don't allow Renault to supply four teams. If they want to encourage new manufacturers for 2013, it's a bad step to take. Otherwise, there will be no incentive for teams to move away from their existing deals with Renault, Mercedes etc.

Everybody already supplies 3 teams. I don't see 4 being the number that pushes others over the edge.

Well in the current situation that is the only possible outcome, because there is only a few engine manufacturers.

In 2013, there is a realistic chance that there will be an influx of new engine manufacturers. We already have PURE, and McLaren are likely to build their own engines. Then there are rumours of Honda, VW or Jaguar coming in.

My point is that if you allow manufacturers to supply 3 or 4 teams, then it is a wasted opportunity to bring new engine manufacturers into the field.

But why should that even be restricted? If everybody wants to run Renault engines, then why shouldn't they all be allowed to purchase Renault engines? Should others be told they have to run worse engines? Why is that a logical solution? If McLaren, PURE, or VW want to sell engines, then they need to sell them cheaper to smaller teams (Or in McLarens case, run there own), to prove they are competitive, and then sell them for more afterwards.

This is how business works. There is no point in simply assigning teams engines, and the last teams to turn up get lumped with the crap. That is what happened with the new teams and Cosworths and X-Trac hardware, and I don't see why it should continue.

If a company wants to make an engine, so be it.

If nobody wants them, so be it.

Competitive market.

Supply and demand.

Renault are supplying more.

Teams are requesting a demand.

Go figure.

I wouldn't get too excited about Williams and Renault anyway, the engine may be good but it's not enough to lift an entire team. It hasn't exactly lifted Lotus our of the primordial ooze - yet.

I don't like it when they do this in the middle of the season. It will be interesting to see how the results play out in Barcelona. Red Bull should still have a big advantage.

That's ludicrous. Teams have designed their cars perfectly legally, and because other teams can't match their talent, they're being penalised and will undoubtedly have to spend an absolute fortune redesigning the rear of their cars in order to stay competitive.

It's not like the dual-brake system McLaren used in 1998, which was a relatively simple change - this could affect the fundamental design of some cars - just because a team, or teams, haven't been able to match it.

This isn't the BTCC, with their ever changing turbo limits. This is meant to be the pinnacle of motor racing. It's some pinnacle when you're punished for being good.

mercedes wanted to copy that technique. doest it mean their upgrade for barceloan will be useless ?
