What if Drivers & Constructors Championships were decided by grid positions??

Posted by ipswich2007
Hi there, I have been very sad and have a lot of spare time, so have decided to work out what the championships would have looked like if you used the grid positions instead of race results,

I will use the same points that were really used for example 1991-2002 , 1st - 10pts 2nd - 6pts etc. all rounds count and for 1981-1985 best 11 rounds counted 1st - 9pts etc.

I hope this provides some intrigue and interest for people :P

I will start with what the 2006 championship would have looked like :)

so here it is...

Fernando Alonso (SPA) 100pts
Michael Schumacher (GER) 99pts
Felipe Massa (BRA) 94pts
Kimi Raikkonen (FIN) 80pts
Giancarlo Fisichella (ITA) 71pts
Jenson Button (GBR) 58pts
Rubens Barrichello (BRA) 51pts
Jarno Trulli (ITA) 29pts
Ralf Schumacher (GER) 28pts
Juan Pablo Montoya (COL) 25pts
Mark Webber (AUS) 21pts
Nick Heidfeld (GER) 13pts
Nico Rosberg (GER) 10pts
Pedro De La Rosa (SPA) 10pts
Robert Kubica (POL) 4pts
Jacques Villeneuve (CAN) 3pts
David Coulthard (GBR) 2pts
Christian Klien (AUT) 2pts

Ferrari (ITA) 193pts
Renault (FRA) 171pts
McLaren (GBR) 115pts
Honda (JAP) 109pts
Toyota (JAP) 57pts
Williams (GBR) 31pts
BMW (GER) 20pts
Red Bull (AUT) 4pts

as you can see the championship would have been a lot closer but the final round would have still been a 2 way fight between alonso & m schumacher
going in to the last round they would have been alonso - 95pts m schumacher 91pts.

schumi would have still needed to finish better than 4th however so the overall result didnt change much.

the constructors championship on the other hand shows that ferrari would have won by 23 points meaning they would have 17 titles instead of the 16 they have today .

let me know if you would like me to do more?

i think you've made a mistake or typo somewhere, because Schumacher qualified 10th for the last race in 2006, and yet you say he went from 91 to 99 points.

anyway, nice work.

Definitely YES!!!
Next years, with fights of hamilton, raikkonen, massa and button - should be even more interesting...
Nice idea to play like this with grid statistics. (Y)

scheyfan - yes sorry my description of the last race was incorrect :P sorry about that, schumi in fact would have gone in to the final round leading by 4 points :P

2003:

Barrichello 95
MSC 92
Montoya 83
RSC 74
Raikkonen 69
Trulli 51
Alonso 45
Coulthard 25
Panis 24
Webber 22
Heidfeld 10
Button 9
Da Matta 9
Villeneuve 5
Frentzen 5
Fisichella 1
Pizzonia 1

Barrichello world champion!
2 things 1 - thanks for butting in on my thread lool

2 - other seasons coming up - i will do 2007-2009 then from 1981-2005 :)

all the best

2007 !

Lewis Hamilton (GBR) 128pts
Kimi Raikkonen (FIN) 110pts
Fernando Alonso (SPA) 109pts
Felipe Massa (BRA) 107pts
Nick Heidfeld (GER) 63pts
Robert Kubica (POL) 40pts
Mark Webber (AUS) 22pts
Nico Rosberg (GER) 20pts
Giancarlo Fisichella (ITA) 16pts
Heikki Kovalainen (FIN) 16pts
Ralf Schumacher (GER) 11pts
Jarno Trulli (ITA) 11pts
David Coulthard (GBR) 4pts
Jenson Button (GBR) 3pts
Sebastian Vettel (GER) 3pts

McLaren (GBR) 237pts
Ferrari (ITA) 217pts
BMW (GER) 105pts
Renault (FRA) 32pts
Red Bull (AUT) 26pts
Toyota (JAP) 22pts
Williams (GBR) 20pts
Honda (JAP) 3pts
Toro Rosso (ITA) 1pt

soo hamilton would have won by 18 points instead of losing by 1 point, and in doing so would have become the first rookie drivers champion and mclaren would have won the constructors instead of ferrari , this would mean that they would now have 9 constructors titles instead of 8 , and also 13 drivers titles instead of 12.

:D Forza Rubinho!!!!

"Trulli was slowing down like he wanted to have a picnic" LOL
2008!
Felipe Massa (BRA) 125pts
Lewis Hamilton (GBR) 118pts
Kimi Raikkonen (FIN) 102pts
Heikki Kovalainen (FIN) 89pts
Robert Kubica (POL) 75pts
Fernando Alonso (SPA) 51pts
Jarno Trulli (ITA) 40pts
Mark Webber (AUS) 29pts
Sebastian Vettel (GER) 22pts
Nick Heidfeld (GER) 22pts
Nico Rosberg (GER) 15pts
Timo Glock (GER) 8pts
Sebastien Bourdais (FRA) 6pts
David Coulthard (GBR) 3pts
Nelsinho Piquet (BRA) 2pts

Ferrari (ITA) 227pts
McLaren (GBR) 207pts
BMW (GER) 97pts
Renault (FRA) 53pts
Red Bull (AUT) 32pts
Toyota (JAP) 30pts
Toro Rosso (ITA) 28pts
Williams (GBR) 15pts

this time it would of been massa who won by 7 points instead of losing by 1 point. this would of meant that ferrari had 16 drivers titles instead of 15 .

2009!

Sebastian Vettel (GER) 100pts
Rubens Barrichello (BRA) 84pts
Jenson Button (GBR) 78pts
Mark Webber (AUS) 62pts
Lewis Hamilton (GBR) 59pts
Jarno Trulli (ITA) 56pts
Kimi Raikkonen (FIN) 38pts
Nico Rosberg (GER) 32pts
Fernando Alonso (SPA) 28pts
Timo Glock (GER) 23pts
Heikki Kovalainen (FIN) 22pts
Adrian Sutil (GER) 17pts
Robert Kubica (POL) 17pts
Felipe Massa (BRA) 16pts
Nick Heidfeld (GER) 12pts
Giancarlo Fisichella (ITA) 10pts
Kazuki Nakajima (JAP) 4pts
Sebastien Buemi (SWI) 3pts
Vitantonio Liuzzi (ITA) 2pts

Red Bull (AUT) 162pts
Brawn (GBR) 162pts
McLaren (GBR) 81pts
Toyota (JAP) 79pts
Ferrari (ITA) 54pts
Williams (GBR) 36pts
Force India (IND) 29pts
BMW (GER) 29pts
Renault (FRA) 28pts
Toro Rosso (ITA) 3pts

vettel would have won the title by 16 points over barrichello, button only 3rd! and red bull would have won the constructor championship over brawn due to having more 2nd grid positions! so brawns record would have been 0 drivers and 0 constructors titles instead of 1 & 1 and red bull would now have 1 driver & 1 constructor title.

To be precise, McLaren did 'win' the 2007 constructors title on race points, but they were excluded

X (@ed24f1)
@SchueyFan: are you sure? I readed some time ago that Ferrari would won the WCC anyway if McLaren wasnt excluded (but applying the Hungary 07 penalty)

yep.203 points mclaren vs 204 points ferrari with hungary penalty

My GPGSL Career
To be precise, McLaren did 'win' the 2007 constructors title on race points, but they were excluded.

So they didnt 'WIN' it then did they ...

and senna you are right - minus the hungary penalty ferrari would still have won by a point

sorry - i forgot about the hungary points penalty.

I wonder what this would have done for the race day attendances?

it's been a while but ive now worked out the 1981-2005 titles according to starting positions.

2005 -
1. Alonso 122pts
2. Raikkonen 94pts
3. Trulli 82pts
4. Fisichella 74pts
5. Button 67pts
6. Montoya 62pts
7. M Schumacher 50pts
8. Webber 47pts
9. R Schumacher 33pts
10. Heidfeld 26pts
11. Sato 24pts
12. Barrichello 18pts
13. Klien 15pts
14. Coulthard 13pts
15. Villeneuve 7pts
16. Massa 4pts
17. Wurz 2pts
18. De La Rosa 1pt

TEAMS
1. Renault 196pts
2. McLaren 159pts
3. Toyota 115pts
4. BAR 91pts
5. Williams 73pts
6. Ferrari 68pts
7. Red Bull 28pts
8. Sauber 11pts

Alonso then would have walked the championship, showing that it wasnt just reliability that ruined mclarens 05 hopes.

I think 2 things are interesting here - 1 Trulli in a clear 3rd place, what happened to his race pace in 2005 :P

And M Schumacher in 7th & Rubinho in 12th, Ferrari 6th . This shows more than the race results i think , just how bad a year 05 really was for Ferrari compared to 04 & 06.

Next - 2004

2004 -
1. M Schumacher 131pts
2. Barrichello 99pts
3. Button 79pts
4. Montoya 72pts
5. Trulli 54pts
6. Alonso 54pts
7. Sato 52pts
8. Raikkonen 48pts
9. R Schumacher 42pts
10. Coulthard 21pts
11. Webber 20pts
12. Massa 11pts
13. Fisichella 9pts
14. Panis 5pts
15. Pizzonia 4pts
16. Gene 1pt

TEAMS -

1. Ferrari 230pts
2. BAR 131pts
3. Williams 119pts
4. Renault 105pts
5. McLaren 69pts
6. Jaguar 20pts
7. Sauber 20pts
8. Toyota 8pts

not much difference to the real results but 1 thing is funny only 12 pts between trulli in 5th & ralf in 9th , a very closely bunched midfield .

something else worth mentioning is Coulthards very poor 2004 performance.

2003 for you-

1. Barrichello 95pts
2. M Schumacher 92pts
3. Montoya 83pts
4. R Schumacher 74pts
5. Raikkonen 69pts
6. Trulli 51pts
7. Alonso 45pts
8. Coulthard 25pts
9. Panis 24pts
10. Webber 22pts
11. Heidfeld 10pts
12. Da Matta 9pts
13. Button 9pts
14. Frentzen 5pts
15. Villeneuve 5pts
16. Gene 4pts
17. Fisichella 1pt
18. Pizzonia 1pt

TEAMS -

1. Ferrari 187pts
2. Williams 161pts
3. Renault 96pts
4. McLaren 94pts
5. Toyota 33pts
6. Jaguar 23pts
7. Sauber 15pts
8. BAR 14pts
9. Jordan 1pt

the main thing you notice here is that Barrichello actually would have won the 2003 title on qualy performance, this is staggering, but does prove that on his day Rubens could be quicker than Michael.

another thing to mention is how much closer Williams are, showing how much better they would have done, if it were not for reliability problems.

Again notice how far away DC was when compared to team mate Kimi , weird.
