It was going to be a second Merc dominance season this year so having a second and hopefully a third/fourth team fighting for the win is definitively a good thing

No chance at all. That Ferrari have challenged in one race is about as hopeful as we can get at this stage. Expecting Williams and another to challenge is nuts. McLaren Honda may well be there at the very end of the season, but obviously aren't going to affect the title places.
Maybe I should have said "for the wins". That will be a Merc dominance anyway, so having some opponents challenging for the win in some races is still a good thing IMO.

Why does everyone one believe that McLaren honda will be challenging towards the end of the season? They can barely complete 30 laps, qualify last for 2 races in a row, and honda have fewer tokens to wok on than renault. What objective data is there that may suggest mclaren will challenge for a place in q3 let alone a win?
Because its Mclaren and Honda, RIGHTZ? WHHEEEEYY!

it's a somewhat romantic notion I think..
Because there is clearly lots of potential there if you believe what they're saying.

They can still make changes to the power unit in the sake of reliability without using any tokens (just like they could with the V8s), so assuming the unit isn't so broken than it can be fixed, they'll get there at some point. The problem is that at this rate by the end of the season they'll be using their 7th and 8th engine components, so while they might not be challenging for podiums, they might have the pace to do so.

The old adage is that it's easier to make an fast and unreliable car reliable than it is to make a slow and reliable car fast.
