The Mercedes power-train is a big benefit, but irrespective of engine supplier Williams have reacted very well to the new regulations and built their most competitive car since probably 2003.

We can debate the semantics about who's gained what and who's lost what and attribute any value we like to it. For example Lotus and Sauber in particular have dropped the ball this year, STR are much of a muchness, McLaren are struggling, Ferrari & Force India are basically status quo and Red Bull are seemingly in a lovers tiff with Renault. Mercedes have made the biggest gain of any team but Williams have done very well to follow them.

We can if we like attribute Williams' relative form this year to the engine and failures of others.. but the bottom line is that they're doing vastly better than last year however you look at it.

Infact, the whole team is looking in the best shape it's been for a very very long time, there's a vibe about them, it's almost as though they've got their "mojo" back. I can only assume that Sir Frank and Claire have formed a very effective working relationship and made some very savvy choices in their recruitment and restructuring of the team. Plus it's said that Patrick Head played a big role in organising the Mercedes deal, so there's life in that old dog yet too.

The form of the teams behind Mercedes is yo-yoing, a little bit with the characteristics of the tracks and also whichever team gets the tyres switched on in the best way. Silverstone is a track which has a bit of everything but is predominately power and aerodynamics. It may well re-expose the FW36 weakness, but Barcelona was supposed to do that and yet they did pretty well there too.
