2013 - Flavio Briatore to return?

Well, since the life ban was overturned, he can actually come back this year.

The question is, will he? And if so, under what guise?

Is he part of anything in any takeover of HRT?

Or the rumours of Genii losing interest?

I miss Flavio. As dark and bad as he was, we need such characters in the sport to keep it on its toes.

Im not fussed about him coming back, but hes no worse than others.

He tried to fix a race result yes? Well having cars take a grid penalty on purpose is sort of race fixing is it not?

I think his ban was unjust with what others have done and got away with.

It's no different to a teammate holding a challenger up to prevent overtaking/getting points and whatnot.

Just on a more spectacular scale in Singapore.

I definitely think there's a difference. People were put at risk, which is totally inappropriate.

Breaking a seal on a gearbox is within the rules. Holding up a challenger is within the rules. Deliberately creating an accident that requires a safety car to do clean-up is not.

I hope he never returns.

Its all still race fixing though and thats what he was banned for.

Yes I agree that it was silly and people could have got hurt, but fixing is fixing.

Remember back in Austria when MS was taken out by Zonta, he tried parking his car on the track to get a restart. Remember when MS crashed at Monaco to stop people beating his time? Well thats fixing as well and people could have got hurt, marshalls were on the track.

Flav also cheated in 1994 yet nothing was done then.

Mixed views on it.

Your comparisons are deeply flawed. Briatore was charged and convicted of much more than match-fixing.

Quote
FIA press release
The World Motor Sport Council finds that Renault F1 team members Flavio Briatore, Pat Symonds and Nelson Piquet Jr. conspired to cause a deliberate crash at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. The World Motor Sport Council therefore finds Renault F1, which, under article 123 of the International Sporting Code, is responsible for the actions of its employees, in breach of Articles 151(c) and point 2(c) of Chapter IV of Appendix L of the Code, and Articles 3.2, 30.3 and/or 39.1 of the Formula One Sporting Regulations.

Among those sections are passages concerning fraudulent conduct, acting against the interests of international (motor)sports, team orders, responsibility for competitors, violations of track code, and last but not least, safety regulations.

Furthermore, the case was unique in it's scope and magnitude.

But MS also done the same in Monaco, he crashed to block the track and stop the people trying to beat him. All they done was put him at the back of the grid.

I do know what you mean though, but others have also played some tricks are still in the sport.

MS "crashing" (which is an overstatement) to block the track was a violation of track code. Since it was impossible to predict that situation, it could not have been preplanned. There was no conspiracy. There was only a driver getting a really stupid idea and acting on it. The same analysis can be done with all the examples you have brought into this thread. None of them had the number of code violations, the severity of effect on the race for all participants, damaging effect on the image of the sport, and amount of danger to competitors.

It's like comparing a bottle rocket and to a clusterbomb. There is no comparison. Repeating the comparisons will not make them any more valid.

You can't play on both sides of the net. Either you understand it, or you don't. Understanding it means that the position you are advocating becomes untenable.

F1 has been filled with immoral characters over the years, Flav not even being the worst.

However any team would have to be crazy to bring him back after Crashgate.

Symonds retuening I can understand as he is a proper top class engineer.

Flav was originally just a manager at a Benetton store, who ended up in F1 as a result of his success as there.

He's one of the most corrupt and obnoxious bastards to ever interfere in any form of motorsport. Soiled goods. I hope he stays well away.

I think he'd struggle to come back as a team boss, but he's still been involved throughout he so called ban as he still manages a host of drivers, Mark Webber among them.

I'd love it to be Flavio! Sorry to the haters, but he knows how to get the team winning properly!

And the article ends with the following:

Quote

Oricchio said Lotus' talks are with a group of investors involving none other than Bernie Ecclestone, who would promote a "very controversial" new team boss.

"Not Flavio Briatore," Oricchio insisted.

You say haters! But who is the one inciting trouble with cherry picked news quotes?

Yeah. By cheating. That would really be winning properly.
