PSU failing?

hello gpgpers,
i seem to have a problem with my pc. it started yesterday when i switched the pc on and within 20mins it shut itself down. No warning whatsoever. I thought it might be an overheating issue (although i did clean the case out last week) and stayed up to date with the windows updates/virus/spyware scans, i put a fan next to the case. it worked until the time i had to switch it off for the night. this morning as a precaution i cleaned out the case once again and much of the fan of the PSU as i could and started it up again. I only connected the bare essentials such as Keyboard/Mouse/Screen. After every half an hour i connected one peripheral in this order Wifi/webcam/joystick/printer/ext. hdd (x2)/iPod dock. After connecting the iPod dock the PC shut down again without warning. So restarted the pc again without the iPod dock and it didn't even get past the windows XP bar thing before it shut down again.
i put a fan next to it again and started it up and it got to the desktop, loaded and then shut down again.
My system specs are;
Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6
Intel C2D E6750
WD Caviar Blue (640gb)
ATi Radeon X1950 Pro
Creative XFi SB Audio
Windows XP Pro
and finally the PSU is a Jeantech JN120F-500AP (500W)
any ideas? thanks in advance

Took two tries but got the heatsink firmly on. First try it was the same situation with 79ºC+. Second try it's down to 40ºC-55ºC, that's fine I hope. I'll let you know more just to clarify its working properly.

Once again thanks for a swift and detailed reply :). (B)

Re: PSU failing?

Right, that appears to be your problem - either the fan on the CPU heatsink has stopped working (I guess you'd notice that), or the heatsink isn't making proper contact with the CPU.

You're going to have remount the heatsink. You'll need some thermal paste (you normally get some with heatsinks, or you can ask at a local PC store for some (it'll probably be a couple of quid) - an small independent store will be better than a PC World or the likes, as they'll likely have some around the back that they'll just give to you for free).

1) Remove the heatsink. If it's the standard Intel one then you can follow [url=

]this video to see how to remove it. Note you shouldn't need access to the bottom of the motherboard - you should be able to simply twist and pull up the black push-pins. If the heatsink won't come off easily, try gently heating the heatsink with a hair dryer (use a low setting) until it's hot to the touch - the heatsink is designed to absorb heat, so it will radiate through the heatsink and will hopefully soften the thermal paste. Gently twist the heatsink until it pops off.

2) Clean off the old gunk from the CPU and the heatsink. If you've got some 100% alcohol or acetone then brilliant (just stick some one a tissue or 2 and rub off the paste). Otherwise, you'll have to try to remove it with tissue, but don't use water or any other liquid as it might leave a residue or even eat into the soft metals. For the record, tissues aren't ideal as they'll break up and leave bits - ideally you'd want a lint-free cloth, but frankly I use toilet roll, and it works fine. So long as you're not an overclocking freak, it won't make much difference. ;)

3) Add the new thermal compound. You just want a small blob in the centre of the CPU heatspreader. When you remount the heatsink, the pressure will spread the compound itself. There's a video [url=

]here.

4) Remount the heatsink. The video above also shows this.

Edit: wow, this forum really doesn't like linking to youtube.

No "Windows is shutting down screen". It doesn't restart. It remains off.

2) Core 0 is 73-74ºC/Core 1 is 75-78ºC. Graphics Card temp is 45ºC

3) I'll test that out now. I thought I get this information in before it does end up heating up.

edit1: Opening up painting and trying to save a jpeg picture makes the temps for both cores to go up to 80ºC and rise

with a fan on this is what the program shows:

edit2: just switching on Windows Media Player makes it go up to the 87s.

Re: PSU failing?

It's not the number of peripherals you've got connected. They're only 5v and only pull between 2.5 and 5 watts. That's nothing.

Though it's on a different rail (12v as opposed to 5v), to put that into perspective, your CPU alone can theoretically draw 65w.

1) By 'shut itself down', does it actually switch off, or does it just freeze or restart? If it's the former, it could well be overheating.

2) What's the temperature of the CPU(use Core Temp and graphics card (try using RivaTuner to find the temperature).

3) What happens if you open a game? Does stressing the CPU or graphics card cause it to crash quicker?
